  1. I like the second score better than the first. The original is good, but it just doesn't have that maniacal quality and sheer power of the second. It's quite restrained by comparison. Just today I listened to Rambo III and thought about how Goldsmith added new themes and played with the orchestration for that film and how he drastically changed the sound of the Omen films with the third installment. Then I thought of what may have happened had he scored Poltergeist III. Well... We probably would have gotten a good score for one. Secondly, I'm wondering if he may have taken it in a new direction as with his other trilogies. Sadly, we'll never know.

  2. I preordered the monster so I plan on listening to it the day it arrives. (Don't plan on looking at the tracklist though.) I listened to Nemesis before I saw the film (only once) and it didn't give anything away. As long as I give it only one whirl before I see the film, I shouldn't memorize any rhythm changes or musical sync points which could spoil something.

  3. 5 of them are 50's songs, the last a big Cole Porter song and dance number to end the movie,

    should be awesome.

but that is a figment of my imagination, there appear to be no songs, other than When you wish upon a star in the last track, Close Encounters of the 4th kind, but I don't think that is much of a spoiler.

The members of this forum never cease to make some of the most bizarrely entertaining replies I've seen anywhere.

  4. One good thing is that I don't have to worry about buying modern film scores. Crystal Skull is probably the only film score from a film released this year that I will buy.

    Ditto.

I know, it's somehow perceived as cutting-edge and whatnot, but seriously, how could one do farting sounds (Rambo) and not think it's gonna be outdated (soon)... The only score he truly integrated synths to blend in is Under Fire, in my opinion. Anyhow, I'd have bought this in an instant, but the synth's will make me rethink it, it's 3000 copies after all, and there must be other Goldsmith scores I'd rather have first.

I'd say that the sound to which you are referring in the latter two Rambo scores is more a buzz than a fart.

Secondly, there is no such thing as a bad instrument. Only bad composers and bad musicians. Anyone who disregards a work because of the instruments used (in this case synths) is only robbing themselves of the full experience of what music has to offer.

  5. KOTCS has been used many times in other threads.

    I'm not the first.

I wasn't trying to imply that. I just meant that I'd gone a while without having seen the title abbreviated and was trying to brace myself for the inevitable ASDOFIQN type of references which I'm forced to decode all too often.

  6. Yes let's all panic over something we have NO INFORMATION ON whatsoever.

Yes it is all doom and despair at JWFAN over the soundtrack to KOTCS.

Just last night I was wondering when I'd first see the dreaded "KOTCS" pop up. Apparently just now.

  7. Is it possible that Lucasfilm was looking to rerelease the old scores, so they included the licensing of the new film score with the old scores as package deal? Perhaps none of the big labels were interested in the old scores

Fools if that was the case.

None of this really matters though. We're getting a score release and that's the important thing. I've already preordered it on Amazon. I'm not expecting anything as face explodingly-spectacular as Temple of Doom but it should be good. Yes, yes. Johnny shan't let us down.

  8. What an underwhelming collective ... sigh....

    Yeah, right. ;)

Oh, that's true, there's nothing by Williams, so it's necessarily worthless.

Oh, and it's baaaaaaaaaad Varèse, so spitting on them is mandatory, right?

    ;)

That is not what I was saying. Perhaps I'm getting bored with the Newman/Conti/Bernstein/North batches that are coming out as of late. It seems as though this has happened the past 2-3 batches.

Whats wrong with throwing in a Williams, or Goldsmith here and there?

I know, I know, they would if they could.

You mean, "They would if they wanted to."

    :):)

  9. Secondly: I didn't say Jaws didn't work. It did.

Blade Runner isn't in Jaws league.

    Opinion.

Blade Runner isn't even one of the top 5 films of 82.

Opinion... unless you mean by cash amount. And, if so, cash doesn't mean a thing artistically. Look at all the crap that does phenomenally now. Yeesh. I guess Transformers is destined to be a classic.

If you'd read my previous posts you'd already know my opinion of each score.

And, like I said before, we're dealing with opinions here. The second we start to "prove our point" by stating our opinions, it gets stupid. You've got your opinion and I've got mine. Blade Runner is more densely packed with material and has much more to say on a philosophical and metaphysical level than Jaws. That's why it speaks to me more. I was moved by Blade Runner and entertained by Jaws. That's the difference. You may not get it or may not like it as much but that's your take.

  10. No Goldsmith Fan, Jaws IS a better film that Blade Runner.

It has never had to have all these additional cuts, trims, directors editions, etc.

ABC added scenes to fill up time, but it was never an official release of the film.

Jaws is a perfectly cut film, that has survived for 30+ years, with the same strenght today as it had then.

Ummm... You do realize that the studio didn't understand Blade Runner, therefore Ridley Scott was forced to vitiate his original vision, causing a chain of events which prevented him from releasing his original intended version for 25 years, right? Apparently not. He didn't create the eight bazillion versions out there, all the while saying, "Hmm... I wonder if I can make up my mind." It was the studio adding footage for video releases and international releases, etc. In fact, the only one which actually got his approval was the Final Cut. You can't say Jaws is better than Blade Runner simply because Ridley got screwed in 1982 and Spielberg didn't in 1975.

  11. Jaws and Star Wars are better films than Blade Runner, on any level.

I must wholeheartedly disagree. And let's not get into the whole "Jaws is a masterpiece" thing which I saw forming a few posts below the one I quoted. There are no masterpieces which EVERYONE sees as a masterpiece. No matter what the film is, not everyone likes it. You may happen to like Jaws more, but I adore Blade Runner. Opinions! Let's not treat them as facts.

  12. Neither Jaws nor Star Wars/TESB were exactly intellectually challenging or deep. The conflicts in both were relatively fairy tale ones. When it comes to popcorn value, Star Wars wins. :P

So being less intelligent makes it a better film. Um, excuse me while I vomit.

I like Jaws a hell of a lot better than Star Wars because of the fact that it's not as "popcorn". Though it's certainly no Blade Runner.

Jaws 2 is a perfectly acceptable action score. The CD is pretty much impossible to get a hold of by, er, legitimate means, so if you can get an LP for 10 bucks go for it.

And try to get a hold of Jaws soon after. :)

That was precisely what I had in mind.

Jaws, Jaws 2, and Star Wars are all greater than the score to Blade Runner, both individually and collectively.

I was talking about the movies.
