  1. Kevin,

In the first place, you're wrong. In the second, as I've stated here many times before, Lucas can feel free to spank his seed all over celluloid for all I care, and you and everyone else are welcome to gobble it up. What I object to with all my blackened little heart is his returning to the originals, meaning the films that made his fortune and his reputation, as well as virtually shaped popular culture as we know it, and deciding to spank all over those as well.

I guess when you get to be George's age, you just don't want to waste the woody. :sigh:

  2. Yeah, I hate when the announcers talk over anything. 9.99 times out of 10 the comments are completely worthless, and they treat the audience as if it consists of nothing but closely bred morons. Like I need Bob Costas and Katie Couric to talk me through an allegory about the Fire Within! Duh, what's allegory?

Watching the opening ceremonies reminded me of why I try to avoid network television.

  3. Crusade definitely had some good themes -- the Grail, Henry Jones, the Nazis, even a nifty motif for the cross at the beginning. But, alas, too many chases, too many trips to the well.

Figo, astonished the motorcycle scherzo was reprised in the end credits, when Henry's theme would have been more appropriate.

  4. Oh yawn!

Give it a rest, tpigeon. It just so happens Mark Hamill can act circles around any of the punky kids in the new trilogy. And that's saying something!

Your argument doesn't hold water. It doesn't have anything to do with immortalizing Star Wars; it has everything to do with the second series being comprised of shitty movies. Without the Star Wars name to sustain them, they would have crashed and burned at the box office. In fact, I venture to guess TPM would have failed so miserably, there would never have been an AOTC. Don't underestimate the power of brand recognition.

As for that great big overstuffed sausage George Lucas, yeah, he did give us something great, in 1977, and again in 1980. He helped create Indiana Jones, and American Graffiti was a pretty damn good movie. But George was still lean and hungry then. From the looks of him (see above), he hasn't been hungry in a very long time.

Figo, who thinks there should be a statute of limitations on how many decades can pass before you churn out a sequel.

  5. I just had a terrifying thought. What if, when it comes time to do Episode 7, Lucas decides there needs to be even more backstory than provided in Episodes 1 and 2? He'll have to take a page from Austrian symphonist Anton Bruckner and give us Episodes 0 and 00.

Figo, who can't wait for an even earlier trilogy, documenting the rise of the Gungans. :cry2:

  6. Oh Christ, the hackneyed shower music is at least as well known as Jaws. How many countless parodies have we endured? How many times has one of our deranged friends begun to imitate its shriek?

Sorry you don't appreciate Psycho, Joe. The main titles are terrific, and the atmospheric string writing has a lot of stark beauty to it. People the world over may not recognize soap, but surely they all recognize bloodcurdling terror.

Figo, who can really freak himself out in the shower.

  7. Towering Inferno, at least, is understandable. Williams was still the new kid on the block at that point, and Rota had been churning out great scores for twenty years. It should be some consolation to you that the Academy eventually considered the award invalid, since, as I've mentioned before, Rota recycled a theme from Rocco and His Brothers. Which makes no sense to me, since Horner does the same damn thing all the time, and he still gets nominated.

I'll never understand the others. Giorgio Moroder?!!! I guess there were precedents for Shakespeare in Love.

  8. Yes, and then not even the "special editions" will be available, not that that would be any great loss.

Episode 7 aside, I think we can definitely expect further alterations to the existing films, which will have the effect of further obscuring their greatness.

Then, yes, twenty years more of Labyrinth, Return to Oz, and Howard the Duck, and there will be an Episode 7. And all the young whippersnappers here will be moaning about Lucas going back and making alterations to The Phantom Menace.

Figo, who thinks Tucker was actually quite good, considering it was put together by two of the biggest stuffed pigs in the business.
