This is probably not the thread to say so, but man did Goldsmith have a great decade in the '70s! I've been listening to Star Trek -- The Motion Picture. Despite the very silly title, this is a terrific score. I realize I'm preaching to the choir on that one, but has anyone else noticed the theme is almost a 1970s version of Nascimbene's The Vikings? Not in terms of the actual melody, but in its recurrent use and persistent memorability. It's hard to believe this is the same man that brought us Planet of the Apes, Patton, The Omen and The Wind and the Lion. Oh yeah, and I'm with Joe -- Twilight Zone -- The Movie (another silly title) is a great score.
Supergirl, however, is fairly underwhelming. IMHO, of course.
Sorry, didn't see The Shadow.

I have to ask...What is wrong with these types of people?
Obviously the special editions and the prequels.

And syphilis.

Sheesh, Hector -- you really need to work on your technique.

You can't, Morn, it's perfect. Summon the Heroes is brilliant in its own way, of course, but as I implied when I commented on its multifaceted nature, it is a much more diffuse composition. Don't get me wrong, this is what makes it so goddam fascinating. It really holds up well under repeated listening. But it doesn't make much of a signature piece. I don't know if you watched any of the Atlanta games, but neither the Olympic Committee nor the folks at ABC really seemed to know what to do with it. Athletes were receiving their medals to the dissonant bits, as opposed to the ceremonial. Summon the Heroes embodies so much more than that, and anyone at all sensitive to its possibilities would have known precisely what parts to play during the awards ceremonies, the commercial breaks, the instant replays, the biographical documentaries. Unfortunately, no such person was involved. Notice during the Salt Lake City games, the TV people just basically said screw it and reverted to the classic fanfare from the L.A. games. I was disappointed Call of the Champions wasn't given the exposure it deserved. A lot more people would recognize it.

LOL
Yes, might as well. I know it's absolute torture, but...

You learn your lesson well, Grasshopper.

I can't imagine any of you with anyone. Thank God.

Sorry, Superman has all the romance and even more drive.
We're each allowed our preferences, of course. (I'm adding that for Beowulf's sake. )

Elmer Bernstein is a god.
Figo, who was riding high yesterday afternoon listening to The Comancheros.

"4am. Time for milking."

Perhaps you should use it as your new signature photo.

I believe this was from his Amish days.

He jinxed the thread into 52 hours of silence!
Of course, in making my offhanded remark, I moved the topic up the page, where it has miraculously been resurrected.
Figo, super-genius.

Imax? For two and half hours? I don't know.
Anyway, I thought a lot of the films from that era (late '70s/early '80s) were already done in 70 mm?

Re: Psycho.
If Williams didn't think it was so great, then why did he bother using it in his famous filmscore medley for the Academy Awards?
Oh wait a minute, he also used Titanic.
Seriously, maybe there's a little professional jealousy there. After all, the shower scene in Psycho is quite possibly the only musical cue in the whole history of cinema which is better known than Jaws.
Psycho

Nothing quite like it in my experience.

That opening "blast" in Star Wars is hair-raising, but Superman manages to sustain the same goosebump level for the duration of the entire opening credits. And there isn't even anything going on! Just a lot of boring names.
Plus, in Superman you get that brilliant ostinato effect, so that you're actually drawn into the music, as it builds and builds and BUILDS.

Listening to the Superman March alternate now. Man, I'm not sure what combination of revision and editing led to the actual film version, but the changes -- much closer to the concert version -- are bloody brilliant.
Don't forget the Fleischer Brothers' cartoons. They were great!

You killed it.

Are you serious? Superman!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Why didn't you just do a poll?
John Williams on steroids?

Yes. Hence, his pathological hatred for Batman.
