Remembering The Gorgeous Goldsmith (1929-2004)
flytrumpet replied to crocodile's topic in General Discussion
Before I go to bed, I shall listen to one of my favorite goldsmith cues, The Enterprise, from TMP. Really good stuff. -
Not sure if you guys heard of them, but they're amazing. They have a CD out called Director's cut, only movie stuff, played on Vienna horns and percussion. Really amazing. http://www.viennahorns.com/vienna-horns-home.php

8 years....wow. I guess I have been here a long time. Without posting for a while. Better late than never I guess. That being said, JG was definitely a top as far as movie scoring is concerned. -
The How Well Do You Know Your Own Collection Challenge
flytrumpet replied to Marian Schedenig's topic in General Discussion
I always have my Ipod to shuffle mode. When I don't recognize a track after about a minute I look at the title. When I have time I'll give this game a try, very good idea. -
Now you're talking...

Man,that is torture...They're coming to Canada, but far from where I am...Halifax...so I can't go since I'm working those days. That would be an awesome show.
-
The OST version sure has a lot of drive to it for sure.Man the more I listen to it the more I think I might have to change my vote....Altough I really think the Utah performance is great, well balanced with a good blend.
-
I also like the LSO very much for that great intro. But as far as tempo and clarity of recording I have to go with Utah. Not by much though.
-
Here you go,easy question. I know the OST version is not the same as the concert version, but I included it in the poll anyway. Vote away. My favorite is the Utah one...Although it's hard to resist the LSO version.
-
This is indeed an absolutely fantastic piece...listening to it as we speak, comparig all versions I have.Has been a favorite of mine since I first heard it....about 29 years ago.Never left me.
-
No disapointment.I saw the original ones 20 some years ago. When you watch it today you can't really expect to feel the same things you did 25 years ago,we all grow up...well some of us.I thought it was a very good Indy movie, nothing more, nothing less.A quadrillion times better than all SW prequels combined. The score is good, tastefull and appropriate...just what you would expect from Williams. For me it worked for the movie, and the album is a very good listen,it'll come miles ahead ofat least the last 2 SW(Phantom was a very good sore). It was a great 2 hours of entertainment. It had everything the previous Indy movies had, lots of bugs. I don't really see what were people expecting from this film...man Harison Ford is 65...give him a break. It's an Indiana Jones movie, not Schindler's list.It probably won't win many oscars, but i really feel i got my money's worth.

Thanks GM for this set.I really liked the previous one you did,but if you say this one will be better i take your word for it. Can't wait to hear it. Richard -

I for one would love to hear your work on this score. It is by far my favorite score ever, and i really agree with what you said about the mixing. In many cues you barely hear the strings and they have very busy parts to play.I'm sure the result that is on the SE is not what Williams had in mind. Why would he bother write complicated parts for the strings if they're only going toget buried in the mix. Anyway,i would gladely listen to your remixing. Thank Richard -

Are you referring to a commercially available score, or something obtained through less public means? If it's the former, where can I buy it? If it's the latter...well, all I've got is "The Map Room: Dawn," and I wouldn't say no to a copy of the rest... Raiders is definately not comercially available....but extremely interesting to study. I'm gonna buy that once I feel like it's financially reasonable. Still, it's missing plenty of great moments. I agree...but better than nothing i suppose I swear, the last thing I'll read on my deathbed is the news (via a 3D version of JWfan) that one John Williams score will be released in full--on CD and on paper--every year for the next century. A full conductor's score to ESB will be delivered before my blind eyes so I can simply feel the newly-printed paper. SW,Empire and TOD in full score paper would be enough to keep me happy untill i die...... -

Already have most of Raiders(of course, lots of markings),and a sig score suite of HPSS is available...but what would i give for a full score of Star Wars....ah nice to dream. -
TESB ending is indeed a classic...that last fanfare to end the cue is absolutely incredible. That being said, the whole of TESB is pure JW genius.I'm going to say it again, but it's a fact that not having Lucas as a director really helped Williams and the score in general. On the other hand,Lucas did direct SW and we got a classic too.... I guess ET would definately be another amazing end credit...i guess timing is everything when you score a movie.

Depends for who...it's one of my favorite.Whenever i play that Spielberg/Williams CD that the Boston pops did in 1990 or so,i always repeat this track when i get to it.As for a sig score...definately the orchestra version though.I tried to transcribe it into Sibelius once, but got bored.I know there's a rental of the concert version available, but they won't rent it to anyone.Good thing i have the manuscript score of the TOD end credits....which includes part of it... John Williams cues that don't sound like John Williams
flytrumpet replied to Eric_JWFAN's topic in JOHN WILLIAMS
I think Kight bus is definately Williams...old Williams though as it seems to be taken from his last mvt from sinfonietta for winds. -
Thanks Miguel for those infos. I'm looking forward to any recording of previously unrealeased JW stuff.I agree that Broughton also has some fantastic stuff.Am i right in thinking he wrote concert music as well?I'm thinking a tuba solo piece for some reason... Richard

Again i can only express my envy ...i would trade all my original JW CD's(which is everything available) for this(including shipping... )Even my original Spacecamp.I would offer scores, but i'm sure you have all i have(even if i think i have a nice collection). Have fun exploring this score. Richard -
I have a rehearsal today and concert tomorrow of his "Gloria" the version for brass ensemble and choir.Quite a fun piece to play for trumpet. Richard
