  1. Just when I thought it as safe to return to the Message Board LOL LOL Hitch to Morn and wishes him well....Alma dear, stop tickling me.
  2. I have to disagree with Marian on "Sphere" being Elliot's best work....In my opinion, TITUS is one of his best scores so far. Though the work he has done with Irish director, Neil Jordan is excellent....may their collaboration continue. They have worked on INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE, THE BUTCHER BOY, MICHAEL COLLINS, IN DREAMS and most recently, THE GOOD THIEF (which I will be seeing tonight in my local theater). Hitch, who is steadfastly collecting Goldenthal, both film and non-film works.
  3. Being a fan of the red headed devil myself, I thoroughly enjoyed DD. Though the characters could have been fleshed out a bit more (Kingpin in particular), it was a enjoyable 2 hour romp. Irish actor Colin Farrell aka Bullseye stole the whole picture in his OTT role. The peanut scene complete with Colin's Dublin accent (Colin is from Dublin city) had me roaring and also nearly choking on my Evian in the process. As for Revell's score, I tend to agree with the comments made earlier by my esteemed colleagues. His main theme was good though. The score will be made available in March on the Varese label. Also anyone check out the ultra-mega cool trailer to X-MEN II - it's gonna rock. Hitch from sunny Barbados.
  4. They bloody well are, mate :spiny: Hitch, who loves to swear over a naked blonde....seen BASIC INSTINCT, then you get my drift
  5. Am I the only one in here that has ALL the CD scores in this years Best Score category? I did win ROAD TO PERDITION in a radio quiz but I had to buy the rest. Philip Glass, I salute you. Your score to KUNDUN was better than THE HOURS. Then again, most of your work is the same anyhow. There's minimalism for you. Almost forgot to mention that the Dutch movie ZUS & ZO has been nominated in the Best Foreign Language category. Three cheers for the Dutch And not a Verhoeven in sight Hitch, who hopes U2 will win Best "Original" Song. Sounds too TITANIC-Y for my taste. God Bless the Irish :spiny:
  6. Last Thursday night on BBC1 television (England), there was a THIS IS YOUR LIFE tribute to composer Elmer Bernstein. The second last person to pay tribute to Elmer was John Williams who via satellite link from his Dreamworks office, made a few lovely comments about Elmer. I have the programme videotaped and will get a transcript written out as soon as I can. Best regards, Pete Saville (aka HITCH)
  7. I remember seeing Bill Conti, Maurice Jarre and Henry Mancini. No doubt John Williams and Jerry Goldsmith will get one soon. I think it's about $4,000 to get a star on the Walk of Fame. And you must go through a committee as well. I think that's what the city guide told me on the L.A. tour 3 years ago. Hitch, who was ecstatic when he received his Lifetime Achievement Award, said "Thank You" and walked off stage. No one has ever beated that record. That's because must of them have to wheeled onto the stage on gurneys attached to a heart monitor and restrained by the baton of Bill Conti.
  8. My good and dear trusted friend, Ron Goodwin, has died at his home in England. Ron, who composed a brilliant and haunting score for my movie FRENZY, was 78. His other excellent scores include 633 Squadron, The Battle of Britain and Where Eagles Dare to name but 3. A frequent visitor to Irish shores, he conducted a concert of his film music in Dublin just before Christmas. May he find solace and peace. Hitch, who is in mourning.
  9. Hi everybody, Wishing everyone here a very happy 2003 and to be sure to catch my 2 movies that will be released in May and October. May 2003: The Mistress Reloaded Oct 2003: The Sugarland Espresso I just discovered over the Holiday season that I don't have a belly-button. Fancy that Hitch, glad to be back and rooting for Elmer Bernstein to win the Golden Globe and the Oscar. Though I'm fond of Goldenthal's FRIDA as well. Can't win them all.
  10. Yes, just got my copy of MINORITY REPORT DVD last Friday night and it's packed full of excellent features that will keep Williams and Spielberg fans amused during the Holiday festive season. Johnny is on Disc 2 in the first of the 6 featurettes that is on the disc. He talks about the film noir aspect of M.R., describing the movie as a bit like a Humphrey Bogart film. He talks for a full 7 mins which shows clips from the movie as he talks. And for once he is not wearing a suit jacket or that infamous black turtleneck but more or less the item of clothing he wore on the NIXON Enhanced CD mini movies. AHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!! M.P. also has a DTS track which is the best way to watch the movie. Not isolated score by the way but those screen menus are class and also feature Johnny background music. Take care, Your lovable, adorable and reclusive director who is scouring the desert for his next movie....THE ENGLISH DIRECTOR, the prequel to THE ENGLISH PATIENT....I will fill you in on the details later. Hitch
  11. Hi all, Just gotten hold of my 2 DVD copy of E.T. and all I can say is WHAT A BLOODY AMAZING JOB UNIVERSAL HAS DONE TO THIS MOVIE. Of course, I had to plug Universal as they are paying me to say it. The John Williams featurettes are superb showing vintage 1982 footage of Johnny and Steve at the piano and at the recording sessions. The live performance with Johnny conducting the orchestra at the 2002 premiere of the 20th anniversary is incredible...the way they were able to show us how it all happened. Watch the movie with the live performance to hear the laughter and the cheers. Then watch it again in superb DTS sound. Roll on Minority Report, Schindler's, Indy etc etc etc etc. Yours, Hitch
  12. You be careful among them English....with a name like Eli Lapp.....now there's a guy who could play John Williams....trim the long beard and shave some of the hair off, add a pair of 1970s spectacles and hey presto. My choice of characters / actors for the roles as film composers should they be made: 1. John Williams - as played by "Eli Lapp" Jan Rubes 2. Bernard Herrmann - as played by Kerry Shale in the 1999 TV Movie "RKO 281" (THE FIRST ACTOR TO PLAY A FILM COMPOSER???) 3. Jerry Goldsmith - as played by William Shatner 4. James Horner - as played by the Blue Fairy from "A.I." 5. Hans Zimmer - as played by Josephine from "Some Like It Hot" 6. Aaron Copland - as played by Sylvester Stallone Hitch, who can't continue as he feels that this sort of behavior is disgraceful and tactless not to mention futile LOL LOL LOL LOL
  13. Besides my 20+ odd B&W movies, here are some of the classics that were neglected to be mentioned here: SUNSET BOULEVARD....sheer class SOME LIKE IT HOT....so does Alma THE FORTUNE COOKIE LOLITA THEM! PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE THE 3 STOOGES MOVIES THE LAUREL & HARDY COLLECTION THE CHARLIE CHAPLIN COLLECTION.....too numerous to mention THE QUATERMASS EXPERIMENT....the original "ALIEN" SHOWGIRLS (that was in color, Hitch) The person who stated that VERTIGO was a black and white should be strung up by his buster browns LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL Hitch JW's CELLO CONCERTO
  14. Horner never really forgave Goldsmith when he denied Horner permission to marry his daughter. Jerry told Horner the hack, "to take a hike back to Pasadena" and for him "to stop imitating his legendary work." For the record, executives at Universal were convinced that Horner and Goldsmith were one and the same person. I tried to explain that Goldsmith was not related to the Weinstein Brothers. Off the record, the expletives that Horner used on Goldsmith were blatantly OTT....I heard everything. Alma wrote excellent shorthand that day and has a copy of it somewhere....so if anyone wants a copy......somewhere in there is the line "ALIEN SUCKS"....Alma thought he was joking.....turned out Fox Studios really did have an Alien Sucks there. Hitch LOL in giddy mood again.....I'm gonna miss these flesh-stretching sessions, my dear.
  15. I've always stated here on this board that you should never underestimate the power of Hugo Friedhofer's music....his score to AN AFFAIR TO REMEMBER is surely the best tear-jerking music I've heard this side of the Atlantic. Forget Morricone suger-sweet score to the remake LOVE AFFAIR, Friedhofer's will always be the best. That last scene with Cary (ROT) Grant and Deborah Kerr still gets to me after 50 years. Hitch, who had many an affair that he cares to remember....bless your heart!
  16. I got my 2 CD "THE FURY" from VareseSarabande.com in 4 days...lightning fast.... Hitch
  17. Sorry: Non-Williams topic Just received my Region 1 DVD of ST 2: The Directors Edition. Gotta say that the new scenes (7 mins) didn't really do much justice to the movie...and the crap picture badly needed remastering. Come on Paramount. We give you millions every year to keep you happy and what do you give us in return? And the second disc is just filled with crap. Not like the ST: TMP Directors Edition which is far superior in quantity. James Horner's score is the only thing that came off this DVD with its reputation intact. And he only gets a mention once though I haven't heard the directors commentary yet. Anyone going to rip this score to get me I mean us a complete version???? Hitch  at Paramount for whom he directed some great classics. Listening to THE FURY: Deluxe Edition....sheer class! Some great Herrmann-esque cues.
  18. Just read a list of the Top 10 CDs in the Classical charts for week ending 31/7/2002 in the UK. At number 6: Harry Potter & The Philosopher's Stone / Williams, John T. Brief description of CD: "Wizard Williams waves his magic wand....again!" How's that for aliteration LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL Hitch looking forward to Paul Verhoeven's stab at BASIC INSTINCT II
  19. Herrmann's PSYCHO still ranks at the top of my list. Though for freakiness, the sound effects from THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE did put some fear into chin 4 at the time of its release. He's never been the same since. It just so happens that I now have a Leatherface. Hitch, catching up on old times on the MB.
  20. Bravest souls of the John Williams Message Board, Due to unprecedented demand, (much to my dismal), the John Williams Classical website, which I had in existence up to some time last year, will be returning in the near foreseeable future. And no Stefan it will NOT be in 2008 as I promised. I have updated my old exisiting site to include JW's Cello, Violin and Tuba Concerti. I have no date at present as to when it will be back but I shall let Ricard know as to its reprisal. Also I have finished my transcription of AOTC which was reviewed in this months GRAMOPHONE magazine, together with an interview with Jerry Goldsmith and review of his CHRISTUS APOLLO CD. Hitch, beginning to take refresher courses in HOW TO GET YOUR WEBSITE UP AND RUNNING AGAIN AFTER MONTHS OF B****ING FROM FELLOW COLLEAGUES.
  21. What about John Doe who conducts the number 25 bus from Oxford Street to Picadilly Circus.....sorry just kidding.... What about this honorable person who was not listed! Herrmann, Bernard  Hitch,
  22. End Of A Ponytail... It's official, Jerry Goldsmith has changed his hair style and the trademark ponytail of the last decade has gone! Hitch, who will be making a film of this when he completes directorial duties on SABRINA II - THE HERETIC
  23. And wasn't Zimmer's GLADIATOR used on the second trailer just before Jerry's music from THE 13TH WARRIOR kicked into action? Hitch
  24. I thought it read "John Williams has soiled himself" Hitch, who still has Alma changing his Pampers every 4 hours.
  25. EPISODE III - DIRTY DIAPERS If that wasn't bad enough, Lucas is going to film it in that forgotten format of 3-D which was just used to great effect on THE RUGRATS GO TO PARIS movie. Angelica was deliciously coy in that one! Apart from seeing those smelly diapers in Episode III, now you experience the unpleaseant smell that goes with it as well. Lucas has revolutionised cinema going audiences by introducing the new THX-STINX sound system...guaranteed to have you checking into rehab for life. I just tried it out on the re-mastered WILLY WONKA AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY...pretty amazing...you could smell the dandruff on those Uumpa Lumpas heads. Forget Dolby Digital! Forget DTS! Forget previous THX modes! The STINX is here for some time to come! Other titles in the running include EPISODE III - EVER HEAR OF BIRTH CONTROL? EPISODE III - SKY ROCKET IN THE NIGHT EPISODE III - CARRIE'S REVENGE (and no its not Fisher) EPISODE III - THE SEARCH FOR THE HELMET EPISODE III - LUCAS CLONES HIS NECK AREA FOR SCIENCE (It fails!) EPISODE III - THE SHOWGIRLS SAGA ENTERS NEW TERRITORY (The restroom) Hitch, who is putting together a John Williams' 70th birthday compilation onto 5 cds....all 4 hours of it...then I can clean my hard drive which hasn't been cleaned since LBJ was in office
