  1. People actually listen to film music for enjoyment? I thought it was more of a status symbol thing. As in, I have so much disposable income that I line my shelves with plastic discs comprising background instrumental music no normal person actually pays any attention to.
  2. Have there been many Slavic takes on the Escapades piece? Would be interesting to hear.
  3. Star Trek is better.
  4. And all the other dull JW scores he gave a 2 or a 3? What sets Presumed Innocent above the rest? Barbara's Confession.
  5. Departs pretty significantly from the novel (starting with the I Ching being dialed down to almost a bit role--at least in the pilot), though it preserves just enough of an outline that it makes you wonder why they bothered. Still wondering how this would work with a 13-episode order.
  6. After seeing it so many times, and just catching it now? Nah. I'm slipping. But it's not the first time I've drawn the comment. After seeing the original Total Recall in the theater the first couple of times, I concluded (in a discussion with friends) that it was impossible for the events of the movie to have been an implanted memory, and it was equally impossible for them to have been real. My best friend at the time just shook his head and said, "Why do you always have to dig?" One thing I've never understood is why Witwer stops Fletcher and his team from pursuing Anderton when he escapes with Agatha.
  7. Yeah, I've heard that from a lot of people. I have to say the pilot probably isn't among the series' better episodes, but they had me hooked from the moment I heard the opening strains of Fleetwood Mac's "Tusk."
  8. Nathan Barr's work on FX's The Americans has been consistently stellar. David Buckley's switch to a predominantly faux-classical style of scoring in the last two seasons of the resurgent CBS drama The Good Wife has been a refreshing change of pace. And despite all the requisite MV/RC-filler that populates a techno-thriller series like Person of Interest, Ramin Djawadi has continued to do some nice things with the motifs he established in earlier seasons of the show.
  9. You've been exposing yourself to John Williams? What, were you trying to show man himself how his music "raises your manhood". . . ? Well, not just John Williams; I try to expose myself to a variety of composers and artists. As to whether that exposure makes me any more "manly," what I do know is that there are few things as richly human as the experience of music. If you believe, as I do, that an appreciation of art can ennoble the heart, mind, and soul, then I can scarcely imagine a manlier pursuit.
  10. So what was the purpose behind the use of the "Spanish-styled music"?
  11. The blogger talks a lot about how "ferocious" and "omnipotent" Williams can be -- and, don't get me wrong, he is all those things and more -- but, speaking from experience, I know Williams can be sensitive and gentle, too. After I started exposing myself to John Williams in earnest, I could tell from the way he scored Sabrina that he can be whatever you need him to be.
  12. For this fan, listening to "Duel of the Fates" does the trick:
