  1. hey all, haven't posted in a while been busy. I love the new soundtrack - I hope to get some time to listen to it more this week. I must say i expected this one to stink based upon the leaks and reviews, and the theme. But it has really grown on me (the theme) and it really has some cool stuff on it. I am very happy I waited to get the CD to listen to this!

  2. cool - but get rid of the violas - at 1 chair to both violins and vc

violas dont really play out in recordings unless there are at least 5 of them (sad but true)

Guys thank you so much, after much thought and from writting some theme "IDEAS" on the piano this is what I have.  (I go to school for Composition, but we have yet gotten in to any advance Orch stuff, so thank you all so much for this)

2 flutes (1'st flute alternating to Piccolo (as suggested, you are right as I look more into this by the way)

    1 Oboe

    2 Clarinett

    1 Bassoon

    2 F-Horns

Perc (Bass drum, Snare, and so on as I see fit)

    4 Violins

    2 Vlas

    2 VC

    1DB

I think this will work actually.  I might add a piano, but I just don't see the need in the way the theme's are comming of age in my piece.  Anyway, obviously  things do change along the way when writting, but I feel some comfort in knowing what I'm writting for a ahead of time.;)

THANK you so much guys, really its wonderful to know there are so many great people out there willing to extend a hand.

  3. Sometimes out here in LA we use weird sections to simulate full sections.

Like why use a String quartet when you can use four cellos?

Next month i will be working on something where we are using 8VC and 14 VN and 3CB - rather then making some ghetto attempt at a weak string section. You must change your writing slightly but it is wise to do this kind of stuff when u cannot get a full section. Remember to not write many divisis

  4. i finally listened to this CD:

i think its awesome!! fragmentary at parts but great at parts. Not a great mix (sts sound like shit) but the trombones and low brass are all over this stuff (incredible playing)

  5. I cant believe he doesnt have a star. Everytime I am over on Hollywood Blvd - i look them over just to be sure. Also missing a star for billy joel, yet ms britney spears has One????? Garbage. (even I like some brit songs)

  6. Anyone else considering going to the JW concert on September 2 and 3 in Hollywood?  I went to the one in August 2003 and it was really a fantastic experience.   Even James Earl Jones was there to narrate segments from the starwars suite and the crowd went crazy.   I love visiting California anyway so I think I'm saving to go then..

Yes, I go both nites. Last year was fun.

  7. Hoby, I have not heard anyone make the claims you describe in your post.

Williams is still an outstanding composer, but not as good as about 25 years ago, IMO anyway.

Tru, yes not so much the members here, but the occasional people who register and then leave us a great pile of BS. If you want to hear John Williams criticized go to any good music university, the people at Eastman were the worst!! People cannot except a man as talented as JW decided to compose for film and not the concert world.

  8. Even if this score was at the level of a Horner score John Williams is still the man, and still has the juice. If you are not convinced go pop in Harry Potter POA. And anyone who calls him a hack is either deaf or plain ignorant.

But it is ok to like other scores more than others, and other composers more than others-this is natural. But to claim the man has no skills anymore is bogus.

    Thanks my opinion.

_hoby ( who still hasn't heard the score and will not give in)

and who also blames in fault musically in the score to GL or BB - becuase I do not like them anymore.

  9. I think williams peaked from 70's to early 90's actually.  I think the last AMazing score was J.P.  HOWEVER, to make the mean hearted comments that were stated in this post are obsurd, the day I see you compose a 2 hour film score that wins an oscar is the day I will put any weight into your comments.  Think before you speak.

Krosstj- who does not like it when people have mean things to say about other people.

Yes, since JP for whatever reason is my favorite JW score it would be fair to say he peaked there. Yet some of the younger fans enjoy the potter's more than Star Wars and 70s,80s. I think its also fair to say that the quality of the movies he has scored has gone down too, and that might be something to do with it.

  10. Even though I am excited to hear the new soundtrack - I find it a bit disturbing with a few good google searches I can have the entire soundtrack (it seems minus a few tracks) as mp3s. I know that the rest of you here at this board, if they participate in the downloading, will go ahead and buy the CD also. Yet there will be so many people not doing that. And even though he is rich Mr. Williams has definately earned his BMI royalties for this CD, George Lucas and Sony can go f#ck themselves. I know that this happens with like all albums now a day - but I don't buy much of that (except at Ameoba records).

    Hoby -

Who just listened to the opening up to the transition and decided it was better to wait.....

and who is also amused by the arrival of more JWFAN.net newbies who come and trash us every time we get excited about something.

  11. I guess hoby 12 was joking too?

    k.m.

No - I wasn't. Hard to judge a 60 second clip though. I just think that theme is weak. But still no doubt John Williams is DA man. One day I am going to track him down at Costco ( i have heard there have been many sightings of him there :) ). I will push his cart for him while he buys pistachios and soy milk.

  12. I am going to have to agree with all the negative people:

Those two sound clips are absolute garbage - I cannot believe that that is a genuine JW theme. It wanders! It wanders so hard just like an amatuer composer would make a theme. There are way too many notes and the figure just doesn't sit well as expanded quarter notes. This theme is so poor I hope it is only in this cue.

However I am sure we will get at least the 1 really tender cue and 1 amazing action cue that I look forward to every with JW non artsy fartsy score.

  13. . I can't imagine not listening to ....

I understand what that means but doesn't two negatives make a positive.

    The stupid english language.

My favorite sentence which somehow means its own opposite.

works better when you say it.

You can't put too much water in a nuclear reactor.

Due to the dual nature of the word "too"

-you can't put too much in (or else it will break and blow up)

-But then again you can't put too much in , there is always room for more.

-Hoby - who will buy the cd on the day and then see what happens from there

I blame all spelling and grammar mistakes on my keyboard
