  1. Thats cool - i bet it is in his contract. Anyway I also wonder how much money he makes on these movies - from salary, from CD sales from, from concert works royalties.... i also wonder what other perks he gets in his contract. I heard somewhere that he won't work on any movie anymore where he is given less then ten weeks to do it . could be true could be false. I wonder if Danny Elf makes more then him. I know he brought in a TON for the spidermans!
  2. I have always wondered why some JW soundtracks contain tracks that are long and through composed but only a small part of the track used in the movie. (might only be one third of the track ) For example: Jabba The Hutt - the tuba track from jedi and HWW from Harry Potter SS Imperial March from Empire and plenty of others while some of these pieces appear in the movies note for note for short amount of time the majority is only on the soundtrack. ...these tracks seem to appear later as concert works or Signature Editions. But I always wondered how JW has had time to write these pieces and include them on the soundtrack? Are pieces like this part of his contract? Does he score the scene first and then later (after scoring the movie but not yet recording) writes more complete sounding settings for these pieces? Does he simply have someone music edit them? anyone know....??.....
  3. close but not the same - both are really nice though if you want to hear that being stolen listen to "Prayer" from the Scarlett Pimpernel
  4. but seriously listen to the majority of the lord of the rings three soundtracks what would it be with out the whole note minor chord ? cresendo in decresendo out I agree a few cues were good - like the lighting of the beacons in ROTK i agree it must have been a beast to write that - obviously why there are sooooooooooooooooooo many whole notes..... yeh the oscar people are nuts..... what JW scores are elegible for this years oscars?? hes gotta win - hes in a bit of a drought (not quite a boston red sox drought though)
  5. but for real who wouldn't be bothered if you lost an academy award to HOWARD SHORE???? Thats like the US losing to Antartica in Basketball....... ps i think howard rocked on the Conan O'Brien Theme
  6. Hook and/or any of the Harry Potters didnt win oscars...... and Return of the King (Aka Return of the Whole Notes) won again....... With that kind of thinking I am suprised the recent "pirates of the caribbean" aka Watered down gladiator wasn't nomindated did JP get an oscar nod?? if so did it lose to SL??
  7. PS thats "sick" instead of "thick" wasnt paying attention watching world series of poker....
  8. I agree with Brahms being a big time stealer - I remember almost identical passages in his Piano Concerto No 2 and his 4th Symphony. My friend says that in born of the fourth of july there is a big melodic quote from the well known Nessun Dorma..... Anyway did anyone find what variation the emperor's theme is in the elgar variations?? the enigmas have got to be one of the most beautiful pieces ever. PS My favorite score of the last 20 is Jurassic Park....I love the transparant nature of the writing of the cues which aren't huge - like tracks 4 and 13 ( being huge). Some excellent 20th century writing also - amazing synth stuff in Dennis Steals..... And i think the theme for the thick triceritops is just simply brilliant .....up there in ULTIMATE quality - like its two brother cues - "you are the pan" and the ET/Elliot Dialouge in the bedroom. Incredibly tender and emotional and more importantly utterly perfect for the scene. The best part is that JW just comes up with these themes - like the "My Friend" and "You are the Pan" and uses them like once or twice! these themes are GOLD - if they were ever thought of by anyone like Horner on JNH - we would hear them OVER and OVER whether they are appropriate or not. Anyway listen to the amount of quality themes and HOOK and then compare them to all other non john williams scores from that year on... i guarantee there are more quality themes in that movie then all the rest of the movies composed since then.
  9. sorry i am not so hardcore that i read the posts from two years ago maybe in the future I should just post a poll about what my favorite soundtrack of the last twenty years is just like every other posting on this board
  10. Isnt there a cue in Home Alone 2 ( i think with vocals - not sure dont have my cds with me) where one of the brass players makes the most obvious split note. anyone know that one? also there are lots of wrong notes and splits in the original Jaws release - it was fixed in future releases Also one of the original STAR WARS trilogy CDs contain a horn split when they are playing the tune in the end credits
  11. Now I know that all music is in one form or other a derivative of something that exists allready. Its amazing that JW, with all the music he has written, has really made for himself his own musical voice that is immediately recognizable. However there are certain cues which seem to me to be nearly exact copies of something another composer has allready written. i am not talking about similar orchestration like say: TUTTI STRINGS: (+ clarinet) Gilderoy Lockhart - HP COS - opening string octave stuff to say Opening of Beethoven Piano Concerto No 3 or any brassy cue to Holst's Mars or any string legato writing in a minor key to the barber adagio For Example: compare in Hook Tinkerbell's Entrance to the opening of the firebird or some of the emperor's music form return of the jedi to the elgar enigma variations - (one of the middle variations) it seems these pieces are nearly identical these are ones i picked off the top of my head I am just curious to see if any else picked out any good "borrowing" examples PS JW says ELGAR is his favorite classical composer
  12. Hey, Did anyone ever notice the two trumpet grace notes on the Main Title Theme of the original Return of the Jedi Release. I think it is in measure 19 (dont have score in front of me now)....if you listen hard you can hear two trumpet grace notes - a sort of half turn - as the trumpets pick up the tune. I have never heard this on any of the main title recordings. Now I am not sure if that is a mistake or not - or how it slipped by the music editor. I think it sounds pretty cool - and I know that must be pretty hard to play if it was done on purpose in that high register. I wonder why its not on the new star wars releases.
