SAVING PRIVATE RYAN 20th Anniversary Edition from La-La Land Records
Amer replied to Jay's topic in JOHN WILLIAMS
What I really want is LLL's CLOSE ENCOUNTERS on vinyl. It was going to happen but not anymore since MV announced in the FSM threads. SCHINDLER'S LIST will happen though (I think) -
SUPERMAN: THE MOVIE - 3CD Set from La-La Land Records

The only reason I bought II/III was the artwork and yes the bonus cues. Plan to get the standalone IV set as well. -
I ordered ROBOCOP 2 and ROBOCOP 3 on 27th March. I've already ordered RAGGEDY MAN via Intrada so thats still still awaited. As of last night my order hadnt shipped infact it still appeared as unfulfilled on my Accounts Page at Varese. So imagine my surprise when the order suddenly arrived and via DHL! That was a shocker since I had used the USPS International Mail and not the expedited shipping. I wasnt home. My wife called and told me ! The worst was the additional Customs Duty I had to pay around $33. I was not happy at all. Infact a few hours earlier I had learnt that my cousins dad had just passed away and we had to rush to a funeral by noon. So not a great day to begin with! Anyways after the funeral; I went to DHL, paid the customs duty fee and collected my order which was all fine and secure. So I wrote back to the Varese/Naxos Manager and told him that I had to pay extra $ 33 even though I would not had to pay had it come via the regular delivery that Varese used to do and requested that they should refund the $33 Duty cost. Also attached the Customs Duty bill from DHL! I also added: "Please also note, I have been a very old customer of Varese Sarabande for the last 20 years. And an active member of the film music and soundtrack community. I am already aware of many shipping related complaints and errors during this past 2 weeks and monitoring these complaints on the various soundtrack forums, I didnt expect to have some problem with my order as well.I sincerely hope that you will rectify this error and reverse my charges." Well within the hour of my email; I got a refund for $33 and an apology note from Varese: " Our warehouse is currently in transition, which has caused some shipping errors and delays. We sincerely apologize for using the wrong shipping method and have refunded you the $33 you were charged. Please let us know if you have any further questions or concerns" Happy Ending! My faith in Varese has been restored. What a fantastic comeback. Moral of the story is despite the problems being faced by the various fans in the posts above; these guys are doing their best to rectify the damage! Iam very pleased and would suggest that those who are still experiencing problems with their orders-not to worry. Email them and they will do everything to fix the problem. Bravo Varese. I thank You!

E.T. was already a very bright recording from the onset. When Matessino redid the final version; Williams himself requested that the brightness (treble) be toned down a bit. So I think its quite balanced than the previous versions. I actually find no real faults with ANH and its definitely the best restoration to date. They pretty much stuck to the original mixes.

I'am more interested in CLOSE ENCOUNTERS and SCHINDLER'S LIST. But I think CLOSE ENCOUNTERS Vinyl may not happen because of the new Sony deal. -

So is the Kritzerland 2cd set the better sounding than the new Intrada redux? I have both sets but have not opened the Intrada set.

Half of Empire was remixed! It also has been a bit compressed. Just compare 'Hyperspace' cue from the Arista box set to this and you will see how the strings are wrongly mixed.

The good thing is we know that Williams management will only allow Matessino to handle Williams related projects particularly those concerned with restoration and expansions. Tom Sawyer (Quartet) was the last time anyone else other than Matessino who was allowed to work on that. As for Lucasfilm, Matessino has already indicated he has been talking to them on SW related projects and Iam hoping that a carefully planned timeline will eventually indicate his full involvement once the stars are properly aligned. (Hopefully in the not so distant future)

The problem with EMPIRE and JEDI in particular is that the Sound mixing engineer (Dan Hersch) when remixing decided to enhance the center channel thereby robbing the entire equalisation of the original sound stage and reducing the brightness, EMPIRE isn't half bad but its been remixed wrong. Original Sound recording engineer Eric Tomlinson was so horrified that he asked Restoration engineer Chris Malone to shut down the cd. LOL. To make matters worse, on the JEDI disc 2 they had to use certain poor quality reels and in order to streamline the quality they decided to re-equalise and reduce the overall brightness- resulting in an abysmal sound. The only redeeming element being the the revised Ewok Celebration- where the new modern mix and brightness becomes even more jarring! There is hope that JEDI will sound beyond terrific when its redone again (whenever) because far better quality tapes exist and stand preserved.

Robert Townson had planned this entire year’s schedule for the Varese Club batches. Apparently he had only '6 weeks' to prepare for the final batch. Had he had more time at this he would have prepared a Batch 'to end all Cd Club Batches'. He is still 'hopeful that one title he had put in motion may still come out'. We just have to wait and see when the next batch begins and hope that more exciting titles take flight.

SUPERMAN: THE MOVIE - 3CD Set from La-La Land Records

Mine shipped at last from Intrada. -
Yes, but I tend to think that this was initially planned as a 4CD set. They would have put the film score program on Disc 1 & 2 , Alternates & Source music on Disc 3 and the OST on Disc 4. Until John Williams management decided to nix the Source cues from the set. The rest is history.

There was 19 minutes of the source music from SUPERMAN: THE MOVIE. How else could they fit on the already full cds? [LLL set i.e]

This was actually in response to my original query at FSM: Speaking of un-recorded cues-do we have a list of what alternate cues Williams also wrote but didn't record?. I thought there was another alternate cue of 'Baby Lifts Lorry'- I had assumed this was recorded instead of the alternate Fortress of Solitude segment- but still glad that the latter was recorded and found instead because its part of a significant sequence.
