The OFFICIAL X Files : I Want To Believe Thread
Foxfan replied to Greg1138's topic in General Discussion
Of course there was to be a movie. The series came to a close with the "truth" being that the end of the world is coming Dec. 22, 2012. We need at least one movie to show the world being saved before this date. -
Boston Pops: Does Lockhart give autographs like Williams?
Foxfan replied to Foxfan's topic in General Discussion
They were indoors (at Symphony Hall). It was the July 1st concert I went to, not the 4th (I was in DC for the 4th). None of the familiar players were there. It was a completely different orchestra! Also, what do you mean by "having the baton jabbed in your face"? I've never noticed that with Keith on TV. What I have noticed on TV are conductors like Abbado who just wave all over the place in a fashion that seems completely meaningless. As for the talk about the brass section, it is a matter of personal preference. For instance, I don't like other orchestras' recordings when the brass drowns out the strings. I find the Boston ones to be better balanced. It also depends how it is miked or where you sit in the hall (brass always seems to drown out the strings at higher elevations like the balconies). -
Boston Pops: Does Lockhart give autographs like Williams?

Well, I'm back from vacation and am proud to report that I got Keith to sign the new Boston Pops' "America" album (which has Williams' Liberty Fanfare on it). As for the concert, I was shocked to see that they seem to have replaced the entire orchestra without warning! It was advertised as being the "Boston Pops Orchestra", but in the program book it was renamed the "Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra". I couldn't recognize any of the players (like Tamara, Martha, etc.). Sure, they played fine, except for "Stars and Stripes" where the timing fell apart near the beginning, but still I wish the BSO would be more honest and admit that the audience wouldn't be seeing the "real" Boston Pops that evening. Most don't notice I'm sure, but for someone who's been to about 10 Boston concerts I noticed immediately. Also, many pieces that were on the program on previous nights were taken out to make room for a middle section featuring youth soloists that had won competitions. And to answer to Morlock, what don't you like about Keith Lockhart? I actually like his natural down-to-earth style more than other conductors who are so stuck-up and make gestures that nobody can understand. -

OK, so he IS likely to come out after the show? -
I'm going to the "Oscar and Tony" show on Sunday (which should have lots of film music). I've never been to a Boston concert without Williams conducting, so I'm wondering if Keith Lockhart meets concert patrons for autographs after the show. I'd like to get that latest "America" CD and get it signed. Anyone know what the chances are? Also, did anyone happen to see full program for this concert?

In case you haven't noticed my other post, I am selling my two extra tickets. PM me for details!
-
OK, so the tribute had the full pieces played, right? The encores sound great! Never heard NBC theme in concert, and Stars and Stripes is always great because of his interaction with the audience. One thing that puzzles me is why he didn't just throw Schindler in the Spielberg tribute. Then all five of his oscars (Fiddler, Jaws, Star Wars, ET, Schindler) would have been played in the same concert. Nevertheless, sounds great!
-
Yeah! SOMEONE here must have seen it! I'm just curious about the Lucas/Spielberg part. Do they actually play entire pieces or is it just a few seconds of each like that disappointing time at Tanglewood when Groban was there? Any Hook???

Since I upgraded to ORCH seats and haven't found anyone else to come, I have two extra tickets side-by-side for 1st balcony left (at the front just above the orchestra... best place for view) for sale at face value (paid 50+6 each so $112USD total). I'd rather give my fellow JWFans here the chance to buy first before selling them on Ebay or something. The concert is virtually sold out (only a few single seats on the edge of the floor are left). PM me if interested. Thanks!

Theatrically I always prefer 2.39. At least it uses an entire frame's resolution and is just unsqueezed. 1.85 movies only use up part of the screen (with black bars physically on the print) and have to been zoomed to fill the screen, resulting in less detail, more grain, and more jumpiness). It is true though that even for 2.39 movies people often get cheated out of a good resolution picture when the stupid filmmakers use Super-35 (since only part of the frame gets used so it requires a blow-up).

Hey, I'm a Québecois!

The BSO has now released a partial program! http://www.bso.org/itemB/detail.jhtml?id=2...22&area=com After the classic Hermann tribute and Harry Potter as indicated, FIDDLER ON THE ROOF! SUPERMAN! STAR WARS! JAWS! ET! (as part of a tribute to Lucas and Speilberg). HOOK???

Does anyone have the written score to the finale of the "Far and Away" end credits track? I want to see what those meters are!
-
Neither do I, but that doesn't stop me. Rediculous arm waving huzzah! Ah, the joys of making a fool out of yourself when no one's watching... and sudendly someone enters the room!!! Who knows? Orchestra players might actually think that we would be better conductors than "real ones" during a Williams concert since we know so many of these pieces by heart. I've seen so many conductors look at nothing but the score during a performance. I doubt the players would find those useful.

What speakers do you listen to your JW through?
Foxfan replied to Eric_JWFAN's topic in General Discussion
I have JBL E80s, but I kind of regret buying those instead of Polk (which I learned afterwards would have been clearer for orchestral). -
Heads up! The BSO has just made the $40 front row orchestra seats available (i just bought two)! For those who haven't bought their tickets yet (or who want to upgrade), this is your chance to be right next to John Williams! It would be nice to have all us JW fans sitting at the same tables.

Which Star Wars: Main Title rendition is your fave?
Foxfan replied to Quintus's topic in General Discussion
Yes, I looked forward to the release of the title music for AOTC, but it was just TPM tracked in again. Same for ROTS. I felt quite deflated (in ost terms) by that. It is the same recording but I believe it has been remixed each time. One thing I noticed right away on the ROTS version is that the harp is much clearer than on the others (bridging the introduction and the main theme). -
So are you coming Ray? You're the one that brought up the reunion idea...
-
Welcome to the club. Yeah, the sound inside Boston's Symphony Hall is terrific (rated as one of the top three in the world)! ORCH level is best place for sound (as the brass doesn't drown out the strings there like it does in the balconies). As for meeting JW, everyone waits on the right side of the hall after the show. He often does come out to meet fans but it isn't guaranteed.

Well, I didn't want to take any chances, so I bought my tickets for the Saturday concert. It's too bad they didn't have $40 row A and B orchestra seats available like they did last year. I didn't want to get $85 tickets since I'm still not sure if I'll be able to go, so I ended up getting 1st balcony seats close to the front, but on the left this time so the tuba won't bother me. Anyone else coming this year so we can have another JWFAN reunion?
-
So how many people are interested in going this year?
