Actually the Boston concert starts at 8:00 or 8:30 and the entire thing gets broadcast locally on WBZ. The national CBS network only joins in for the end of the 1812 Overture, a headliner song, the patriotic sing-along, another song, and The Stars and Stripes Forever. The concert officially ends with this last piece (as they've been playing for over 2 hours) and the fireworks are set to a pre-recorded playlist as the place empties out.
Also they never admit that it's not the "real" Boston Pops (made up of BSO players) but rather the Boston Pops ESPLANADE Orchestra (freelance).

The mic-ing/mixing was awful.. you could barely hear the orchestra's trumpets. Especially evident during the Liberty Fanfare and the West Side Story excerpt. It was only fixed in time for the 1812 Overture.
Also the local station (WETK - Vermont Public Television) interrupted the show 5 times for weather alerts due to a thunderstorm, including during Stars and Stripes.

Jason, if you can please add me (plus a friend) to the Unos reservation. I may stop by after all.

If y'all wanna spend less money on food and have more left for drinks, I recommend the Pour House on Boylston across from prudential centre (10 min walk from Symphony Hall).
They've got the Pour Boy cheeseburger and fries on Saturdays for only $3. Pints of Sams also relatively cheap there. That's where I'll be before the show, but I'm sure some I'll see you after waiting for autographs.
Oh BTW the Boston Pops just released the two front rows of seats at the last minute if you want to upgrade your tix to be right behind JW.

Yes, Memoirs of a Geisha was a fine example of a concert suite that works.

There could have been a perfect transition with that F-sharp at 4:38 to the full E-Major (or C-Sharp-Minor?) "melancholy" theme from the credits (6:16 in Homecoming). It just doesn't have the same effect on me when played in G-Major (or E-Minor?) in the new arrangement. The begining of the flute passage at 6:38 seems to be thrown off too because of this.

Oh no!! Now how will we ever be able to hear the original "Homecoming" in concert? We already had a concert arrangement.
This new one just splices up bits and pieces from Dartmoor, Plowing, Reunion and Remembering Emily with jarring transitions and key changes. Turning the soundtrack into a three-movement suite like "Jane Eyre" or "Born on the Fourth of July" is fine, but this latest attempt to squeeze everything into 8 minutes just doesn't work as well as "Homecoming" did.

USA Today article from January/February, plus the BMI article that's on the forum's main page. I assume that's why the Boston concerts were delayed by a week compared to the last few years.
Williams was not among the audience in Detroit, though his Cello Concerto appeared to be well received.
For those who have listened to the webcast, anyone notice the changes in the orchestral introduction in the first movement? It seems the trumpets were at least an octave higher than on the Yo-Yo Ma BSO recording. The end seemed different too. Did Williams revise the piece at some point?
The rest of the concert was also quite interesting. Never heard of Cindy McTee but her Symphony No. 1 was actually very "filmic" in sound. It is subtitled as a "Ballet for Orchestra" but the first and final movements sounded quite dramatic. The Resphigi Pines of Rome also closed the concert in a spectacular fashion with extra trumpets in the boxes/loges... a live experience no recording can match.

I'm attending tonight's performance. I wonder if there's a chance of Williams attending. He must have wrapped up the Lincoln recordings in Chicago, and Detroit would be just a short hop on the way to Boston for rehearsals.

The Montreal Symphony Orchestra is scheduled to perform Williams' Trumpet Concerto on Friday, October 12, 2012.
Unfortunately this is a one-time morning concert, so I won't be able to hear it for myself.

According to the BSO they've got the narrator from "The Reivers" (Alan K. Simpson) so it's almost a certainty that he's playing that arrangement again. It was performed last year at Tanglewood with Morgan Freeman).
Hoping for more details and quite surprised that they're already sold out. Good thing I got my tix the day they went on sale.

Though the prequel main title may have been sourced from the same recording, there are some slight differences in the mixes. For instance, the harp glissendo when the introduction segues into the main theme comes out a lot clearer in Episode 3.
In the original trilogy ESB wins hands down. Rough recording on ANH and out of tune brass on ROTJ.

47813!
Wow quite a lot of copies sold within the first 10 minutes! Definitely getting mine signed June 2.

OK people... who crashed the website?

Do we have the actual vote count to see if War Horse + Tintin had more combined votes than the Artist? As I recall this was the case in 2005.
-
Damn! The Artist... nice he shook Williams' hand on the way in.

What time will the "Best Original Score" category be presented? I don't want to watch for 2 hours if it's near the end.
-
Was it in 1.85 or 2.39? I saw it Real-D in 2.39, which seems to contradict the info listed on IMDB.
-
Since we're discussing distortions, anyone else notice horrible scratchiness of the bases/cellos in The Homecoming (0:30 - 1:10)? I have the original CD and JBL tower speakers and there is definitely some issue issues in the lower registers. Sounds like it was miked too close.
-
Saw the Real-D French version in Québec last week and it was shown in 2.39 (scope). Does it vary from theatre to theatre? Has anyone actually seen a 1.85 3D presentation?
-
Now playing in Québec!
I'll see it in Real-D tomorrow.

So I guess the Boston concerts this spring won't be the world premiere, though it will be interesting to hear if the concert arrangements differ from the end credits suites.
I want the score for "Homecoming"!
-
Just bought my tickets which went on sale today.
No program details listed yet but we can almost be sure the concert will feature the world premiere of "War Horse".

I was also disappointed as it leaves very little room for the Maestro's autograph... I definitely want to get it signed in May if it wins the Oscar!

I was there. We knew Lockhart and Slatkin were to have the primary role, but thought JW might have conducted one or two encores. It turns out there were none (unless you count a James Taylor song before the Happy Birthday Variations listed in the program.
