  1. What's this music? Probably library stuff, but it does sound orchestral.
  2. Some REAL updates from Don Williams (JW’s brother and his usual timpanist) grabbed during a meeting at theAcademy of Scoring Arts lecture: Looks like the sessions began a couple of weeks ago and will continue through August and September, with a couple of weeks break because of JW’s commitments at Tanglewood. Don talks about 135 minutes of music (gasp!)
  3. You know the drill! ...and then he said; I know, but all the good composers are dead!
  4. I put it on repeat most of the day .At least 15-20 times by now. I love this, it's kind of a mix of theme from Jurassic Park with Harry Potter Might end up one of my favorite concert versions ever and one of his most beautiful.
  5. THE CONRAD POPE COLLECTION Click Here to Order: https://tinyurl.com/suyvxyj . THE CONRAD POPE COLLECTION is presented as a limited edition of 500 units. LISTEN TO A SOUNDCLIPS FROM "THE CONRAD POPE COLLECTION” GHOST SHIP https://tinyurl.com/vxu2akh TEMPTATION https://tinyurl.com/th8m5hc PROJECT: MOONBEAST https://tinyurl.com/skbuapz UNDER THE MOON https://tinyurl.com/vsjecbr Composer Conrad Pope will sign the first 50 copies of THE CONRAD POPE COLLECTION, VOLUME 1 sold through the website. Dragon’s Domain Records, to be distributed through buysoundtrax.com, presents THE CONRAD POPE COLLECTION, VOLUME 1 featuring music composed and conducted by Conrad Pope (PAVILION OF WOMEN, MY WEEK WITH MARILYN, TIM’S VERMEER) for four feature films from his filmography. Conrad Pope is one of Hollywood’s most in-demand orchestrators, known for his numerous collaborations with composers John Williams, James Horner, Howard Shore, Alexandre Desplat, James Newton Howard, Alan Silvestri, John Powell, Mark Isham, Danny Elfman, and many others. Pope also has a resume of some 18 original film scores to his credit. His talent in many aspects of movie music and his dexterity on scoring paper and concert stage alike has given him a sought-after reputation in Hollywood that has remained durable and dependable for thirty-five years. GHOST SHIP was based on the true story about a Spanish galleon in 1863 that was swept up the flooding Colorado River from San Diego, and was stranded and wrecked far inland in the Salton Sea. The fictional part of the story has to do with seven kids, who learn of the lost galleon and turn a boring school rock-collecting trip into a quest for a shipload of lost pirate treasure. Somehow the filmmakers were able to fund $100,000 to record the score with a 75-piece orchestra, an unheard of amount for an independent movie. Pope’s score is grandly adventurous with large orchestral gestures, a Coplandesque motif setting the tone for a late 19th Century adventure involving eager kids. Released in 1994, TEMPTATION is a potboiler about insurance fraud and murder. The director was looking for music along the lines of Jerry Goldsmith’s BASIC INSTINCT. His score for the film emphasizes fluid string lines and is built around a main theme for the primary character, along with a surging action motif for brass and a suspended electronic choral element. Pope composed both the electronic and the orchestral music for the film; the latter was recorded with a 52-piece orchestra. 1995’s science fiction thriller PROJECT: METALBEAST is about a group of scientists who create a super soldier by injecting the subject with the blood of a werewolf. Naturally, the experiment goes massively awry and the manufactured lycanthrope is cryogenically frozen for 20 years—after which it’s revived by the surviving member of the original project, who enhances the were-soldier with a synthetic metallic skin that makes it virtually indestructible. Thanks, Doc. Pope’s music for the film is grandly powerful, with an especially glorious finale. UNDER THE MOON was made in late 1993, but you won’t find it listed on IMDB or anywhere else, because it had a single showing and then disappeared from the face of the Earth. The film was a passion project from a group of young would-be filmmakers from El Paso and tells the (at the time) unthinkable story of a man whose girlfriend, a school teacher, breaks up with him and he becomes so enraged that he comes down to the school and shoots her in her classroom, taking some of the children hostage and ultimately making an escape in a school bus. The four film scores included on this collection all stem from 1992-95 and are the first movie scores Conrad Pope wrote. The music reflects the influence of the composers Pope orchestrated for, but they also exhibit what he could do with that inspiration when left to his own creativity. All four of the scores on this album were performed by a contracted orchestra in Salt Lake City, Utah. Dragon’s Domain Records is excited to bring the contents of THE CONRAD POPE COLLECTION, VOLUME 1 to compact disc for the first time. The music has been mastered by James Nelson at Digital Outland, with liner notes written by author Randall Larson, including the participation of composer Conrad Pope. THE CONRAD POPE COLLECTION, VOLUME 1 is a limited edition release of 500 units. GHOST SHIP (1992) (Original Score) 01. Overture - Call to Adventure (1:50) 02. Action on the High Seas (1:46) 03. 6. Hey Everyone, Very funny mockumentary about John Williams just hit the internet!!!!! http://www.funnyordie.com/videos/124d58d022/the-greatest-moments-in-musical-history-episode-one
  7. Greetings, fellow JW fans! My name is Aaron Fullan and I'm a film composer from near the Chicago area. As you know, John Williams' 88th birthday is this weekend (February 8), so I decided to arrange a musical tribute piece in honor of this most special occasion. It's entitled "Skywalkers' Legacy | A Star Wars Symphonic Suite" and it highlights some of my favorite themes from the Star Wars saga. Much to my surprise, John Williams' go-to orchestrator (William Ross) listened to the piece last night and used words/phrases like "quite good", "wonderfully arranged", and "bravo!" in his comments about it! Needless to say, my day/week/month/year was made. I'd love to hear your honest thoughts about it if/when you have a few minutes to listen/watch it! I highly value the opinions and input of my fellow JW fans on this "labor of love." HAPPY BIRTHDAY, JOHN!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  8. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker - For Your Consideration (FYC) Album 01 Prologue (1:45) 02 Falcon Flight (2:22) 03 We Go Together (2:10) 04 In the Desert (2:26) 05 A Prisoner (1:23) 06 To Kimiji (1:37) 07 Fleeing from Kimiji (1:53) 08 Hallway Shooting (2:11) 09 Hard to Get Rid Of (2:19) 10 Join Me (2:21) 11 The Old Death Star (2:14) 12 Off the Waterfront (1:03) 13 Final Saber Duel (1:38) 14 Healing Wounds (2:49) 15 Advice (1:54) 16 Battle of the Resistance (1:54) 17 Approaching the Throne (4:16) 18 Parents (1:57) 19 Coming Together (1:44) 20 Seeing Sights (3:17) 21 Rescue (1:10) 22 Farewell (4:27) 23 A New Home (1:42) TOTAL TIME - 50:32 F.A.Q.: FYC? What's that stand for? For Your Consideration. Basically, Disney setup a website where eligible voters for the various awards that are given out around the end of the year could learn where they could attend a screening of their films, see which awards the films were pushing for, and listen to selections of the score for Best Score nominations. For the films that had score selections, they are exactly what is heard in the film, and sometimes include music not on the commercial soundtrack albums! So the music here is different than the album? Yes! Some tracks are almost the same, but the structure of the FYC program is fundamentally different; It is a selection of music from the movie exactly as it appears in the final cut of the film, even if the music used in the film was edited from Williams' original intentions. This could mean that a track might contain an Insert Williams later wrote, where the OST presented his original version; or a track might contain less music than its OST counterpart of the scene was re-edited after the recording of the music, or even a track might contain some music artificially looped or stretched if a scene got lengthened after scoring. The FYC always reflects these non-intended conforms to final picture from start to finish. So does the FYC contain the complete score? Certainly not. The FYC is only 50 minutes long. Which tracks contain music that is not on the OST album? We won't know that until the OST album is available to hear. Where can I find this FYC? https://disneystudiosawards.com/star-wars-score.html https://disneystudiosawards.com/star-wars-rise-of-skywalker/score In case Disney later removes this page, it is archived permanently here: https://web.archive.org/web/20191210202934/https://disneystudiosawards.com/star-wars-score.html I don't see a download link there; How do I download the files from Disney's site? In case Disney ever takes the files down, they are archived permanently here: The files on Disney's site have really low bitrate of 192kbps; Is there any chance its available uncompressed somewhere? Disney should be mailing out pressed physical CDs with the FYC program to Academy music department voters sometime soon. Usually not long after that, they begin turning up on ebay, and not long after that, lossless rips appear online. NOTE: It is against the board's rules to ask for a lossless rip in the public forum. Use the PM System or go to other websites for that discussion! Posts asking for illegal downloads will be deleted! Alright, so what's on the FYC album that is not on the OST album? 01 Prologue (1:45) [0:00-0:07] (0:07) = alternate mix of OST 02 Journey to Exegol [0:47-0:50] [0:07-0:26] (0:19) = OST 02 Journey to Exegol [1:02-1:20] [0:26-0:28] (0:02) = OST 02 Journey to Exegol [1:24-1:25] [0:28-0:36] (0:08) = OST 02 Journey to Exegol [1:31-1:40] [0:36-0:56] (0:20) = OST 02 Journey to Exegol [2:13-2:33] [0:56-1:28] (0:32) = NOT ON OST (Tracked music, an alternate for Rey arriving at Exegol late in the film) [1:28-1:37] (0:09) = tracked music from OST 01 Fanfare and Prologue [1:44-1:52] [1:37-end] (0:07) = NOT ON OST (Tracked music from Hard To Get Rid Of 1:58-2:01) 02 Falcon Flight (2:22) [all] = NOT ON OST 03 We Go Together (2:10) [all] = OST 09 We Go Together [0:00-2:33], with minor edits, but a proper clean ending 04 In the Desert (2:26) [all] = NOT ON OST 05 A Prisoner (1:23) [all] = NOT ON OST 06 To Kimiji (1:37) [all] = NOT ON OST 07 Fleeing from Kimiji (1:53) [0:00-1:35] (1:35) = OST 08 Fleeing From Kijimi [0:00-1:33], with minor edits [1:35-end] (0:18) = NOT ON OST (Full clean ending of the cue) 08 Hallway Shooting (2:11) [all] = NOT ON OST 09 Hard to Get Rid Of (2:19) [all] = NOT ON OST 10 Join Me (2:21) [0:00-1:48] (1:48) = OST 10 Join Me [0:00-2:05], shortened in numerous places [1:48-2:03] (0:15) = tracked music from The Battle of the Resistance [2:03-end] (0:18) = OST 10 Join Me [3:17-end] 11 The Old Death Star (2:14) [0:00-1:14] (1:14) = OST 04 The Old Death Star [0:00-1:19], with minor edits [1:14-end] (1:00) = NOT ON OST, either tracked in from something or a replacement insert for what's on the OST from 1:19-2:21 12 Off the Waterfront (1:03) [all] = OST 04 The Old Death Star [2:21-end] 13 Final Saber Duel (1:38) [0:00-1:10] (1:10) = OST 12 The Final Saber Duel [0:00-1:05], with minor edits [1:10-end] (0:27) = NOT ON OST (The proper full ending to the cue) 14 Healing Wounds (2:49) [0:00-0:31] = NOT ON OST, definitely a replacement insert for what's on the OST from 1:05-1:42 [0:31-end] = OST 12 The Final Saber Duel [1:42-end] 15 Advice (1:54) [all] = NOT ON OST 16 Battle of the Resistance (1:54) [0:00-0:02] (0:02) = OST 13 Battle of the Resistance [0:04-0:08], shortened [0:02-end] (1:52) = OST 13 Battle of the Resistance [1:12-end], with minor edits 17 Approaching the Throne (4:16) [all] = OST 14 Approaching The Throne, with minor differences (including a pitch-shifted opening and a different ending [a different choral performance with less orchestra under it]) 18 Parents (1:57) [all] = NOT ON OST 19 Coming Together (1:44) [all] = NOT ON OST 20 Seeing Sights (3:17) [all] = OST 15 The Force Is With You [0:00-3:02], with minor difference (including a clean ending) 21 Rescue (1:10) [0:00-0:15] (0:15) = OST 15 The Force Is With You [3:02-3:16] [0:15-0:30] (0:15) = NOT ON OST (A nice section he chose to microedit out of the OST program) [0:30-end] (0:40) = OST 15 The Force Is With You [3:16-end] 22 Farewell (4:27) [all] = OST 16 Farewell [0:48-end], with minor edits 23 A New Home (1:42) [all] = OST 18 A New Home If I'm adding that up right, that's 21:10 of unreleased music! 10. With the release of The Rise of Skywalker, we finally get to hear Williams giving his final send-off to the Star Wars franchise. With it, one can't help but bring about comparisons to another composer and his send-off to another beloved space franchise. I speak, of course, of Goldsmith's Star Trek: Nemesis. While the two scores differ in that, while Williams went into TROS knowing this would be his last Star Wars score, Goldsmith did not have the same benefit of going into Nemesis knowing this would be his last say on Trek. That said, both scores I feel work well as far as providing some sort of feeling of finality to these composers and their respective journeys with these franchises that they had been a part of for decades. Listening to both scores, one can't help but feel, although perhaps imposed retroactively in the case of Nemesis, that the proverbial book is being shut by each composer. With Nemesis, we are hit with lovely numbers like this one... ...which see our emotional buttons being pressed in ways not identical but certainly not entirely dissimilar to what Williams gives us in TROS: Alongside heightened emotions, the films bring new villainous motifs to the table: Enough blabbing. Which score do you feel serves as a better send-off for the composer with their franchise?
  11. http://www.disneymusicemporium.com/rgshop/star-wars-the-force-awakens/ 12/18 soundtrack release date. It's the perfect release date if you ask me. I might (probably won't) try and skip the samples and preview tracks to give the movie a "fresh" experience. Is Disney releasing this?
  12. Raiders of The Lost Ark - Piece Query So, I've been searching all over YouTube for 'Uncovering the Ark'. I understand that it only had a restricted release. It seems such a shame that such an unnerving and haunting piece is so hard to find... Would anyone care to point me to anywhere where I might find the audio? Preferably YouTube, but if you have an audio extract I can use that too. Many thanks for reading!
  13. Well, it's here, we finally have Episode 9's OST, and that also means we have (for the time being) our final end credits/finale from Star Wars. Rank away: 1. The Rebel Fleet/End Title 2. The Throne Room/End Title 3. Augie's Great Municipal Band and End Credits 4. A New Hope and End Credits 5. The Jedi Steps / Finale 6. Victory Celebration/End Title 7. Finale (TROS) 8. Confrontation with Count Dooku and Finale 9. Finale (TLJ)
  14. Here's my analysis of the new themes in The Rise of Skywalker (beware: spoilers present!) http://www.filmmusicnotes.com/new-themes-and-their-meaning-in-the-rise-of-skywalker/ Enjoy!
  15. Haven't been paying much attention to this thread, but are the sessions still going? Saw this today: I wonder if these 300 bars could be from TROS? Could be any film though really...
  16. My guess: John Williams: The Boring Years (Sleepers, Stepmom, and Rosewood, with the latter in a new and even more boring edition.)
  17. 18. With the release of the Rise of Skywalker OST, we have received 2 new concert suites which presumably John Williams hopes will become part of the performance repertoire as the Imperial March, the Main Title/Closing Titles, Yoda's Theme, Rey's Theme etc have become. If you had to include Rise of Skywalker in a concert, which other pieces would you put around it (and in which order) to make a nice Star Wars Symphony or tone poem - say no more than 4 in total (3 is ok too). For example: Star Wars Main Theme Rey's Theme Rise of Skywalker March of the Resistance Or: Anakin's Theme Rise of Skywalker Yoda and the Force Rey's Theme
  19. Hi everyone, I've been trying to steer clear of JWfan and social media until TROS comes out, for fear of musical spoilers. But I did want to drop in quickly just to share an article I wrote that I think JWfan may enjoy: "How John Williams’s Star Wars score pulls us to the dark side" https://www.washingtonpost.com/outlook/how-john-williamss-star-wars-score-subtly-pulls-us-to-the-dark-side/2019/12/13/be3ab50e-1b7d-11ea-87f7-f2e91143c60d_story.html Most of what I cover here is stuff a lot of you will already know (Vader's death cue, the Emperor/Augie connection, the fantastic unreleased music in ROTS Opera Scene) but even if it's not news, I bet it will still be fun seeing it in print! (Also, despite my better judgment, I checked the comments on the article, and most of them are really wonderful!) May the force be with you all!
  20. Robert Altman made this short film for the birthday of his wife Katherine Reed (or Kathryn Reed) in 1965, and John Williams scored it. That's about it in terms of what we know about it. It's probably the most obscure item on his filmography (not counting some tv titles) and presumably even harder to find than STORIA DI UNA DONNA (1970). I wonder, though....has anyone ever tried contacting the Altman state about it? If not, how does one go about contacting the Altman estate?
  21. I haven't had any crazy theories for a while, so here we go. ...I'm listening to the Scavenger, and the rhythmic piano section of Rey's theme (starts at 1:03) sounds eerily similar to the Emperor's Theme. Sort of like Anakin's Theme was a bright and cheery version of Darth Vader's theme? Is the Skywalker gone bad, and the Palpatine gone good this time? Is this why Luke gives Rey the death stare at the end?!
  22. What's your favourite Sequel Trilogy action setpiece? There were more for each score, I Can Fly Anything, The Battle of Crait, Battle of the Resistance etc. However these are three I've chosen for this poll - one from each film. The Speeder Chase is my new favourite of the trilogy, it's energetic and vibrant, has a punch to it that makes it at once fresh and yet harkens back to the Williams of yore, not to mention the main motif which evokes memories of RotJ's escape from Jabba's barge.
  23. Some great stuff in here! For one, his energy and enthusiasm are remarkable. He also crushes on Daisy again, and even on Billy Dee Williams a little bit! haha
  24. According to IMDB, JW has a cameo in the corrupt superheroes series The Boys. Is this one of IMDBs usual errors, or is it true? https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0002354/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0#actor
