  1. Which film and score do you prefer; Superman: The Movie or Batman? When it comes to the films, I feel Superman: The Movie is the superior movie. For all its atmosphere and distinctive production design, Batman ultimately feels somewhat hollow. As with nearly all of Tim Burton's movies, it is a film of style over substance. I feel Keaton fails to own the role of the Caped Crusader, while Reeves completely owns the characters of both Clark Kent and Superman. The Bruce-Vicki relationship is empty and emotionally vacuous, and while Jack Nicholson's turn as the Joker is entertaining to watch, it ultimately is little more than an iconic celebrity doing his well-worn shtick in a villain costume. All this is not to say Superman is a perfect film, but it has a lot of heart, and I feel it does a lot right, arguably hitting higher highs than Batman. Both scores are excellent and undoubtedly iconic. While I concede that Williams' Superman may be the superior score, I've always preferred Elfman's Batman, which I firmly believe to be his magnum opus, and in my top ten favorite film scores.
  2. Since the movie comes out in less than 2 weeks and there are possibly valid spoilers/plot points already floating around the internet, I thought I'd go ahead and make this thread. For those willing to check it out, here's the reported full plot synopsis for the movie, courtesy of Reddit.
  3. I thought this would make for an interesting thread... so here it goes. What are your favorite single shots in a movie? For me, it will always be this scene from E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial: The imagery of a bicycle in silhouette over the moon, accompanied in film by Williams' magnificent score, will always remain, in my opinion, the greatest single shot in cinema.
  4. I don't understand why the Hobbit/LotR EE are approved by fans without reservations when the SW Special Editions are viewed as a sacrilege and defile the "theatrical editions" Isn't it the same idea? Isn't Peter Jackson basically identical to George Lucas?
  5. Which, in your opinion, is the most lacklustre entry out of the three most recent franchise prestige damaging movies? I would say AUJ by a considerable margin. Not only is it a shoe-in for the most visually repellent big budget movie of all time, but it also went out of its way to out-bloat the entire LotR EEs and King Kong put together. Never has there been such redundancy in moving pictures and such disrespect for the art of editing. And on top of all that you have a regurgitated and tedious score which makes James Horner look like Morrissey. Edit: I've changed my mind to Battle of the Five Armies after seeing it today.
  6. Which is your favorite dwarf out of the company of Thorin Oakenshield?
  7. Who's the more interesting character in PJ's 6 films? I would have to say Bilbo without even having anything resembling a second thought. I find Freeman a far more interesting actor then Wood. And his character, even with loadfs of invented subplots has a lot more meat on it's bones. It's the same way in the books for me, actually. Bilbo for the win!
  8. I'm listening to Billy Boyd's song. And it's beginning to really hit me that this is the end of something significant. I can still remember when I was five or six when my father gave me his copies of Tolkien's work. It's always been such a deep part of our relationship, and of our whole family. Reading the books together, talking about them, being surprised and thrilled when the films were announced. Luckily they were winter releases so I was around to see them with everyone. We went so many times to each. Those films changed my life fundamentally. When we all congregate at my brother's house in a few weeks, I'm bringing the DVDs and we're all going to watch them together again, this time with some added wives and daughters and sons. We'll see this last installment together too. I'm getting a little bit weepy typing this. I'm just glad that I was around for all of this, that I got to share it with people in the ways that I did, that it moved my life in the right direction in so many ways. Whether or not I or any of us get to see more of Middle-Earth brought to life some day, we got this much, and it's been beautiful. Boyd's song is a farewell to all of that, from a man also undoubtedly hugely changed by it. What must Peter Jackson, Ian McKellen, Howard Shore, Ian Holm... all of them, what must they be feeling as this comes to an end? I think now I need to drink too much ale and smoke a few pipes, in the Professor's name.
  9. So, since reviews are coming in, I thought a film discussion thread would be appropriate.

  11. As we have done in the past for Inception and The Dark Knight Rises, here's a thread to discuss Interstellar with others who have seen it. From what I can tell the film opens tonight at 8:00 in my local IMAX theaters, so I assume it's the same around the country if not the world. Feel free to post short write-ups in the last film you watched thread or the existing Interstellar thread, the latter of which can be used for more talk about trailers, commercials, reviews, box office, etc - but here is where you can discuss the film in detail without having to worry about annoying spoiler tags. Spoilers are allowed here, don't say you weren't warned!!!
  12. Seemed to make sense to me to have a thread for general MCU news, rather than putting it all in Future Films thread, especially since each entry doesn't get their own thread, etc, and it's a popular film series with lots of news coming out all the time. For starters, here's a video about the various easter eggs that have been in the films This video catalogs almost every Easter egg in the Marvel Cinematic Universe
  13. Alright,I'm tired of just one movie thread I hope others follow my lead and post in this one for movies playing in the cinema NOW, or movies of the "current season" I saw Lucy. Good action film and I recommend it.
  14. Huh. http://variety.com/2014/film/news/rian-johnson-to-write-direct-next-two-films-1201226481/
  15. Pixar has released a still and plot description for Inside Out http://io9.com/heres-what-we-know-about-pixars-next-movie-set-inside-1582104347
  16. What films were so f*cking awful that you'll never bother watching them again? A few that made my list... ATTACK OF THE CLONES (2002) -- I made my mother take me to this following my birthday. That poor lady. Even when I was 12, I could tell that she couldn't stand being there. 300 (2006) -- Just one of those films that really doesn't require a second viewing. I watched it because of all the hype surrounding it and found it to be a steaming turd, just like most of Snyder's films. SPIDERMAN (2002) -- Boring trash.
  17. Everytime I see one of these I laugh, I haven't seen a bad one yet. They just did Attack of the Clones, and it's pretty funny too!
  18. http://www.thewrap.com/steven-spielberg-attached-direct-bfg-tom-hanks-cold-war-thriller-will-next-exclusive/ Apparently both Robopocalypse and the Montezuma film are "on the back-burner."
  19. I just read this interesting article on 2014 films coming out that aren't sequels, prequels, reboots, or adaptations: http://www.buzzfeed.com/wordsbydan/14-movies-in-2014-that-arent-sequels-prequels-r-b6bd?bffb I have not seen a trailer for most of these movies, let alone even heard of most of them. But many sound intriguing! Of course beyond those types of films, there are many franchise movies coming out, like X-Men 6, Transformers 4, Hobbit 3, Hunger Games 3, Night at the Museum 3, Expendables 3, How To Train Your Dragon 2, Captain America 2, Muppets 2, Spider-man 2, Dumb and Dumber 2, Veronica Mars, Robocop, Godzilla, etc. Here's a complete list http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2014_in_film If I could only see 5 films in the theater in 2014, they would be: The Hobbit: There and Back Again Interstellar Jupiter Ascending Sin City 2 Gone Girl So what are you excited for?
  20. I guess I'll start one. I think it's the best "blockbuster" style movie of the year. One where you can actually take the stakes seriously and care about what happens and make you feel something coming out of the cinema. The actors are all top notch and you can see everyone gave it their all to elevate the movies It can be accused of being a " teen romance" movie not worthy of older people's attention, but the Star Wars and Indiana Jones movies also had romance as central elements of the films .Personally, I do not think Hunger Games has anything to do with the Twilight franchise (I saw most of them too) Catching Fire was clearly a better film than the first one, but the original Hunger Games was great too and very underrated IMO. I saw 3 trailers of blockbuster movies tonight, Godzilla, Spiderman 2 and 300part 2. All had the same CGI shots of cities and buildings falling over or being blown to bits...do we even care anymore about massive CGI destruction of cities? PS in second place is Desolation of Smaug for blockbuster this year
  21. Hiya gang. Just like last year, with the The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey FILM Discussion Thread, we are creating this thread so people who have seen the film can discuss it (or people who are reading spoilers can discuss them openly), which leaves the existing The Hobbit Film Trilogy Thread clean for those wishing to avoid spoilers until they've seen the film. So, spoiler-filled discussion of the film here, anticipation of the film including new commercials, trailers, posters, promos, ticket purchasing, etc talk there. Enjoy!
  22. Inspired by Bloodboal's thread, I thought there would maybe be some interest to put pure score to scenes, and take out all the dialogue, and sound effects to enjoy the music fully? I started a project way back ago, but I could not get all the edits exact, but it is still enjoyable to watch Here are a few I did ages ago for fun: Test Drive from How to Train Your Dragon The Might of Rome from Gladiator War from Avatar
  23. http://www.mugglenet.com/app/news/show/7209 Looks like it. This is out of the blue. I can't help but feel that I'm being trolled somehow. No idea how it will work but... interesting.
  24. Hello. I started this thread at blu-ray.com too, but i didn't get many suggestions in what i was looking for. I'm searching for films of the specific time frame, whose plot is in autumn, with many autumn landscapes and an autumn feel. I'm not searching for Halloween, or Thanksgiving movies (i will be searching for those in their own time). (neither horror/thrillers) One that fits the criteria, that I've seen, is The Trouble with Harry. Also When harry Mets Sally was suggested. I've seen it but I don't remember it much.. Rudy - that I watched yesterday - was very autumn-y too (although it had a couple of winter scenes) Dead poets Society has an excellent autumn atmosphere (the one I'm looking for), but its later part is held in snowy winter, so I'm keeping that for later..
