  1. The Rise of Skywalker score might not be eligible for the Best Original Score Oscar as the Academy is going to keep the November 15th submission deadline they used last year. http://filmmusicreporter.com/2019/04/24/academy-confirms-return-of-short-lists-in-music-categories/ So, like, December releases will only be eligible if they're willing to give the Academy an FYC by 11/15? That's stupid.
  2. As we've done in the past for other big movies, it's time for the SPOILERS ALLOWED DISCUSSION THREAD for The Force Awakens. The movie had its premiere tonight and its opening wide soon in some European countries. Soon twitter and Facebook and other places will be abuzz with people discussing the movie. I want people to still be able to come to JWFan before they get to see the movie and not be spoiled. If you see the movie and want to post thoughts in the main thread for the film or the Last Film You Watched thread feel free, but please do not put any spoilers in those places. Meanwhile, in this thread, feel free to openly discuss the entire movie without spoiler tags. OK, this is the last chance for people wanting to avoid spoilers to turn away! Have fun everyone!
  3. Mike Matessino updates us on John's social life, also Episode IX: Does June seem a little late for John to start writing this score, considering the timelines for the last two sequels, the December release, and the score's likely runtime? Maybe this is his way of reducing the plethora of rewrites TFA undertook, waiting until the film is properly assembled (sans VFX) rather than writing reel by reel.
  4. I don't agree with all of this guy's analysis, but he does make some good points, especially regarding the overuse of the Force Theme. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gB4lULC87Oo
  5. Is it better than The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, and/or Revenge of the Sith? As much as I love the score to The Force Awakens (and yes, it's a grower), I don't think it's better than any of the 3 prequel scores. At most, it's on the same level as ROTS (the weakest of the prequel scores, IMO). The 3 prequel scores, though not necessarily the movies, are instant classics. Not sure yet that TFA actually has that sort of longevity and impact. TFA, in my opinion, lacks strong set pieces like "Duel of the Fates," "Across the Stars," and "Battle of the Heroes" as well as standout action pieces, like "Star Wars and the Revenge of the Sith," "Zam the Assassin and the Chase Through Coruscant," and "The Droid Invasion." What do you think? My ranking (at this time): 1. The Phantom Menace 2. Attack of the Clones 3. Revenge of the Sith 4. The Force Awakens
  6. Hello all. I've decided starting to upload some of my own piano arrangements on YouTube since I thought I'd be a shame if they are only watched and used at my place by just myself. 😉 For now and the near future it's just about John Williams but I will add some pieces by other composers, too. I'm focussing on "hidden treasures" more delicate pieces that are actually suitable to adapt just by piano. Also, it's not about score reductions, so naturally, some parts of the orchestral score are not included. I just went online a few minutes ago and I'm glad to present you my first three videos. Btw I have no experience with video editing or YouTube at all. And I'm also curious if I'll encounter any copyright issues... 😛 But for now, enjoy!
  7. Hello. I’ve uploaded my first public suite and I would like to know what you guys think of it. What I created is The Prequel Trilogy End Credits (Suite) and it functions as a compilation of the end credits music from TPM, AOTC, and ROTS in order to make a seamless transition between them. https://youtu.be/O2KFxD-JCTQ The arrangements I did were: -Augie’s Great Municipal Band -Default Prequel Trilogy End Credits music -Duel of the Fates -Anakin’s Theme -Across The Stars -Revenge of the Sith End Credits Medley
  8. The Force Awaks will turn 2 yo in a few days... Already two years! Woo-oooo!!!! As you know, the FYC album was available very shortly after the release of the score, allowing the fans to make their own playlists very quickly. Did you stick to the OST album? Did you stick to the FYC Album? Did you make your own playlist? Bespin wants to know!
  9. As expected, it will be released the same day as the movie, and will be just one disc: https://www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-Last-John-Williams/dp/B0758KSWZK/ Currently, there's a placeholder cover, although given what the cover looked like for TFA I wouldn't be surprised if they just add "Music by John Williams" and give us that.
  10. What the title says; what if your favorite obscure motif from any of the Star Wars films. I'm referring to a re-occurring motif that either has no specific meaning or is just not noticed by most people. Mine are probably Maul's motif (yes, he has his own motif; NOT DotF) and the unknown "Sith" motif (as I call it) from ROTS.
  11. There are so many cool designs for aliens and creatures in the Star Wars universe. Do you have a favourite? Please include a picture with your answer.
  12. JOSH TRANK TO DIRECT STAND-ALONE STAR WARS FILM June 04, 2014 In addition to the episodes of a new Star Wars trilogy, Lucasfilm and Disney continue development of multiple stand-alone movies that will offer new stories beyond the core Saga. The newest director to come on board is Josh Trank. "We're thrilled to welcome Josh into the family," says Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. "He is such an incredible talent and has a great imagination and sense of innovation. That makes him perfectly suited to Star Wars, and for this new slate of movies that reach beyond the core characters and storylines of Episodes I through IX." Trank states, "The magic of the Star Wars Universe defined my entire childhood. The opportunity to expand on that experience for future generations is the most incredible dream of all time." Trank captured imaginations worldwide with his critically lauded directorial debut Chronicle, a fresh and engaging take on the superhero genre. Trank is currently at work on The Fantastic Four for 20th Century Fox. http://starwars.com/news/josh-trank-to-direct-stand-alone-star-wars-film.html
  13. Personnaly, I've taken the decision not to buy the BD of TLJ now, and I will not buy the BD of Episode IX neither. I will instead wait for a boxset reuniting the 3 movies from the new trilogy... Hoping they will fix these three things in it: - Chewie not hugging Leia when he come back to the Resistance base (TFA) - The "Thing" that looks like Yoda (TLJ) - Put the scene where Chewie try to eat a Porg in the Deleted Scenes where it belongs (TLJ).
  14. I try What @Jay asked me to do, to be more specific in our threads titles... we'll see how time it will hold. So the lastest press news, says the 6 CD will feature the "reconstructed" programs of the 6 OST (in the case of the OT, we obviously speak about the LP programs). Yes, we calculated it, the 2-LP programs can now fit on a single modern CD. So that's it... now, we have to wait for new relevant information that will be given by secured sources (Disney, etc.) and some our friends who have contacts...
  15. In this thread you can openly discuss The Last Jedi with no spoiler blocks at all, but here in the early days before wide release it's ok if you want to block certain things. LAST WARNING!!! SPOILERS ALLOWED BEYOND THIS POINT!!!
  16. Great news. John Williams officially confirms to John Burlingame in his new detailed interview to Variety. Read below and rejoice! (Thanks to Mike Matessino for the alert) http://variety.com/2018/music/awards/john-williams-could-set-oscar-record-1202658996/
  17. The Last Jedi opened in the USA tonight, and in addition to the standard 7:00 pm showings, there was also a 6:00 pm showing that including free snacks, some swag, and exclusive visual content before the main film. Many thought the visual content would be a look at Solo: A Star Wars Story, so you can imagine my surprise when, after a spoken introduction recording by Rian Johnson, we were treated to a 5-or-so minute long tribute to Williams, and a look at his work on The Last Jedi. There weren’t any specific new things to me - it was mainly people praising Williams, and Williams talking about his process (still using paper and all). There was a shot of him and Daisy Ridley hugging, which was cute with Williams’ little crush in mind. There was also a beautiful statement of Leia’s Theme (EDIT: was Luke and Leia’s theme, got mixed up in the excitement of the moment haha!). Williams did touch on the topic of Episode IX right at the end. He said he hasn’t thought about it yet, but that he hopes his time with the Saga isn’t over. Hopefully this gets officially posted online, or is included in the Blu-Ray!
