The Horse Doug Adams tweets: "It's being reported that Bruce Broughton has let it slip that #JohnWilliams is going to do all his own orchestrations on #StarWarsVII" "If true, that's pretty cool." "This staggered recording schedule thing may be a great boon in the day of compressed post-productions. Wonder if it'll become the new norm." http://twitter.com/dougadamsmusic This was today, not yesterday, BTW, so no April Fools I know Jason likes direct links, but I can't access Twitter from my work PC. Jason, SOURCE ME SOME TWEETZ!

Hello my friends , check out this arrangement I made of the Star Wars soundtrack. John Williams is a genius, this is the most beautiful melody I've ever heard . In this arrangement I use a pen to create a cello sound on guitar. click here to subscribe http://www.youtube.com/user/MrMarcosKaiser?sub_confirmation=1

I don't understand why the Hobbit/LotR EE are approved by fans without reservations when the SW Special Editions are viewed as a sacrilege and defile the "theatrical editions" Isn't it the same idea? Isn't Peter Jackson basically identical to George Lucas?

JOSH TRANK TO DIRECT STAND-ALONE STAR WARS FILM June 04, 2014 In addition to the episodes of a new Star Wars trilogy, Lucasfilm and Disney continue development of multiple stand-alone movies that will offer new stories beyond the core Saga. The newest director to come on board is Josh Trank. "We're thrilled to welcome Josh into the family," says Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. "He is such an incredible talent and has a great imagination and sense of innovation. That makes him perfectly suited to Star Wars, and for this new slate of movies that reach beyond the core characters and storylines of Episodes I through IX." Trank states, "The magic of the Star Wars Universe defined my entire childhood. The opportunity to expand on that experience for future generations is the most incredible dream of all time." Trank captured imaginations worldwide with his critically lauded directorial debut Chronicle, a fresh and engaging take on the superhero genre. Trank is currently at work on The Fantastic Four for 20th Century Fox. http://starwars.com/news/josh-trank-to-direct-stand-alone-star-wars-film.html

What is everyone's opinion is regards to Williams' music in ROTJ? Does it live up to SW and ESB (or the prequels if you think those are superior scores)? Personally, I think it has some of the best musical moments in the saga, especially the music involving Luke, Vader and the Emperor towards the end of the film.

We all know that there are new Star Wars films coming in the future, and we know how much the prequels managed to deteriorate the iconography of the originals. One of the things that I think defines some of this iconography and identity of the original films is the LSO, their performance, and what I believe to be the techniques with which they were recorded. There is a gritty, edginess to the sound of the orchestra, which is completely lost in the prequel recordings. The new ones just sound too smooth. Does anyone feel the same way? I wonder what kinds of techniques were used back in the 70s and 80s to achieve this; I'm not sure if it is merely an analog vs. digital debate because it sounds like there are many more things going on, perhaps close-mic-ing the instruments, I'm really not sure. Do we hope that this could be something that John Williams and JJ Abrams will care about for the 2015 film? It would seem that John Williams would be an advocate for a smoother sounding orchestra these days. Does that detract? Do we care? Does it matter? How would they go about it if they DID care? Thoughts?

The subject was doubtless already approached here, but I find that it is not well enough documented on the web. I've learned some time ago that the version of the "Finale/End Titles" found on the SE ESB CD, is not the movie version. As a matter of fact, this version, the same that was previously issued on the Polydor CD, always was a "montage" of re-recorded versions done specially for the 1980 album. To find the movie version of the "Finale" (It's the movie version or an alternate take I'm not shure), you have to check on the the CD2 of the Anthology Box Set... Unfortunately, this version is (not so well) mixed with the re-recorded "End Titles". So it's an "hybrid" version... And to find the movie version of the "End Title", you have to check on the CD 4 of the Anthology Box Set. Then again, it's an "hybrid" version, because they strangely (certainly by lack of space) mixed it with the Original ROTJ finale... This "End Titles" version was supposely never put on an album before, because of some distortion problems. So, If I'm not wrong, the only way to hear the original movie "montage" of the "Finale/End Titles" is on the DVD or Blu-Ray. It can't be found on an album. Strange destiny for such a legendary piece, no?

How likely is it that the LSO will continue to record the new Star Wars movies? Given that Ep. 7 has an unconfirmed release date of May 2015. Scoring would take place a few months prior like in Feb or March. Do you think the Hollywood Studio Symphony could pull this off? I guess hypothetically JW could write the music and have someone else conduct it, but I'm guessing he gets a lot of satisfaction of conducting them live. Any thoughts ? ! ADMIN NOTE: On March 21st it was officially confirmed to be in LA. http://www.jwfan.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=23272&p=1105384

OK let's assume for the sake of this poll/thread that Williams is scoring the film - which themes do you think are most likely to appear in Episode 7's score? Obiviously Luke's Theme and The Force Theme will re-appear, there is NO question about that. I think after that, Princess Leia's Theme and Han and Leia's Love Theme are most likely to reappear. Williams used Princess Leia's Theme in Episode III and seems to be fond of it. He seems to have forgotten Han Solo and Leia's Love Theme entirely over the years, but I think it will finally return now. I do wonder if he will use The Rebel Fanfare as the theme for The New Republic or will write a new one. And I wonder if Duel of the Fates will have any reason to reappear. You'd think with Anakin/Vader, The Emperor, Yoda, Jabba, Boba Fett, Darth Maul, Qui-Gonn Jinn, Shmi, and Greivious all dead their themes won't reappear, but you never know - they might be re-purposed for new characters who embody their spirit. I expect a ton of new themes actually, with only minor references to the older themes. Except The Force Theme, which I'm sure will appear about as often as it did in ROTS.

Given the conversion in some of the other threads, I thought I would start a poll asking whether you want JW to score episode VII, whether or not he is asked and/or is interested. Given this website, one might think the answer is obvious. However, given some of the conversation, I am not so sure. So, here it is.
