  1. Tron Legacy (2010) BlumeScore™*: 82% BlumeRecommendator™**: Recommended! It's a rare thing to find yourself engaged by a film like Tron Legacy these days. A movie with a big budget, oodles of action, and an implicit number two attached to the title. In almost every way then, Tron Legacy is everything we deplore about modern Hollywood. And yet in almost every way it proves it's not the ingredients that are wrong, it's what the cooks do with them. The film's story has neither great depth nor great breadth. The story doesn't delve too deeply into the ramifications and implications of the world of Tron or the quasi-life within it. It lightly brushes on the ideas of open source and corporate greed, but nothing more. For a film of its budget the breadth of the story is small. The film mostly takes place in a claustrophobic digital world. The cast of main characters easily fits on one hand give or take. This is as unepicly you can make an epic blockbuster. What Tron has is an incredible per scene focus. As a great whole it lacks a sense of grand cohesion. By the end credits you don't find yourself getting a tingly "Oh, I see the connection between the first scenes of the film and the middle or end." But in its individual elements it is an extremely engaging and rewarding film. There are scenes in Tron that are better than any scene from any film from 2010 I've seen. An easy example: the series of scenes centering around a wonderful character Zuse (Michael Sheen) easily rank as some of the most well executed scenes of the year. When you are in these scenes you don't particularly care for what came before or after. You find yourself engrossed in the moment, awed by the incredible execution, cheering for the easily likable characters. It's this ability to grab you and pull you in is what allows Tron to get away with its numerous flaws. Cutting edge visual effects, strong actors, a great soundtrack by Daft Punk, gripping if controversial art direction, wonderful cinematography, stellar fight choreography and action and good editing aid the immediate immersion of the film. As whole the movie doesn't transcend the sum of its parts. But its individual parts are wonderfully executed enough to make this, I dare say a damn good film. The sum of a lot of large numbers is pretty big anyway right? * The BlumeScore™ is my personal assessment of the films merits. Out of 100%. ** The BlumeRecommendator™ is my opinion of how worthwhile the movie may be to you as a JWFanner. There may be great disparity between the BlumeScore™ and BlumeRecommendator™.
