codanai 0
I'm watching a documentary on Errol Flynn (called The Adventures of Errol Flynn), and it has these wonderful variations on the theme from Erich Wolfgang Korngold's Violin Concerto, Mov. 3. If there's anyone familiar with that theme (the one in Lydian mode), do you know where Korngold uses that theme, besides in the Violin Concerto? Did he use it in a movie score? I'd just really like to find that music.
Marcus 390
Ah, what a lovely theme!I think it was originally written for either "Escape Me Never" or "Another Dawn", but it's been a while since I listened to it outside the context of the concerto (which is marvellous!).Marcus Jurassic Shark
pixie_twinkle 60
I love the Korngold violin concerto. I have the Gil Shaham recording, and the AMAZING Heifitz recording. I strongly urge you to hear both. That lydian theme is very similar to several scores, including the music for Dark City by Trevor Jones.
Marian Schedenig 9,151
He borrowed the main theme, which rises by a characteristic tritone and then descends, from the film Another Dawn, and the equally lyrical subsidiary theme (meno mosso, cantabile) from Juarez. [...] The slow middle movement, a Romance in G major, consists of gentle melodies in the upper register taken from the costume and adventure drama Anthony Adverse. The brisk finale uses a dance tune from the picture The Prince and the Pauper [...]Marian - :spiny: Jurassic Shark
pixie_twinkle 60
The final movement sounds like it came straight out of a Carry On film! :spiny: I always imagine Charles Hawtrey when I hear that theme.
codanai 0
Wow Marian, thank you!And I would definitely love to hear the Shaham and Heifitz recordings of the concerto. I have the Perlman recording, which is also very good.
A24 4,603
I too have Shaham version. Barber, the other violin concerto on this CD, is also very good.
ChrisAfonso 200
I think Shaham's Barber is the best recording I know, he has the right style. Hilary Hahn's falls a bit flat on the expressive/romantic/schmaltzy () side of it, but it's worth it for the incredible third movement (I guess she wanted to break a speed record or something *g*)
pixie_twinkle 60
I think Shaham's Barber is the best recording I know, It's very good, but the orchestra misses the final note of the piece! It's such a shame, as I think it's the end of the CD as well. They just aren't together.
ChrisAfonso 200
Really? I have to check that out... but it's not the end of the CD, it's followed by Korngold's "Much Ado About Nothing" Suite for Piano and Violin, very cool piece by the way (played it with a friend a few years back)-
pixie_twinkle 60
Oh yes, I forgot that was on there. Great piece. It's strange to put it on after a couple of orchestral pieces though I always thought. I would have stuck it in between the two concerti.
