Does John Williams sign material?

I have a poster that I have always wanted him to sign, but just don't know where I would see him. I am going to a concert on September 2nd....but I figure there is no way I can get it to him.

A friend said he has sent material for him to sign at his home in Boston, but forgot the address.

Does he sign and if so, where would I send it?

Matt

He definitely signs things and takes pictures with his fans after concerts (at least he does after the Boston Pops concerts). I got my "40 years of JW film music" CD insert signed, and the concert program, in addition to 4 pictures with him.

Try waiting by the stage door after the concert; you may be waiting upwards of an hour (he tries to wait before coming down so there will be fewer people left).

Good luck!

I would get him to sign a Hans Zimmer post LOL. And since this fan board lost ALL its manners! Matt welcome to the board. Anyway what kind of poster do you want him to sign?

I once wrote to John Williams at an address in London and after about a year or two, I recieved a photo of a shark (JAWS) signed by the Maestro. You can see a pic of it here:

I'm sorry I can't provide the exact address, as it was many years ago. But he does sign by mail and it's possible you could mail him something (at your own risk) and he may sign it. The only address I could find now with one report of success (signed card with Close Encounters of the Thrid Kind "Greeting" notes written with signature) is this one:

301 Massachusetts Ave.

Boston

MA 02115

USA

I sent him two letters already and I'm tempted to send another one because its been two years for one, one year for another. But I wanna meet him, just not in court when we are signing the restraining order...

I can report a second one - I sent the Maestro a booklet from "1969-1999 Greatest Hits" album, the International Reply Coupon and an envelope with my return address, and after 5 months I received the booklet with his autograph. Generally, this address is worth a try, or at least it was 4 years ago.

Wow! What I'm more interested in is what you would have done had the booklet not been returned? :) Yea I know most people wouldnt care as the GH doesnt seem to worth much to most here.

The first time I met Williams was at Tanglewood. So it IS doable. Here’s what we did:

It was a Tanglewood on Parade concert, we were there most of the day. At one point before the main concert, we walked over to the right side of the Shed to the side entrance that people usually line up near to meet the conductors. We peeked in through the gaps of the blinds behind one of the windows, and saw Williams at a desk about 4 feet away! I’ve got some pictures of it somewhere, but you couldn’t see much – you had to move from side to side to know it was Williams for sure.

After the concert, we went over to the same area, and stood near the line of people waiting. Once they told us that Williams wouldn’t be coming out that night, we continued sneaking around to the right. Through some lines of shrubs/trees, and found ourselves in the back parking lot behind the Shed. You could see the rear stage door, and several “nicer” cars parked. We hung around the edge of the lot, and just waited. After about 10 minutes, we saw Williams and his driver exit the Shed. We walked over (as did a few other small groups of people). He was very gracious, and took time to talk with all of us, take pictures, and signed programs, cds, etc. He didn’t seem in a rush, and was great to talk with. After about another 10 minutes, he got in his car and left. We hung around for another few minutes hoping maybe to see Lockhart, but we didn’t see him before we decided to head home.

The second time I met him was at Symphony Hall in Boston. Just waited by the stage door on the right side of the building. You’ll see his Lincoln towncar there. I could tell you the license plate, but that would be a little too stalker-ish for me  You’ll probably be able to tell, because if he’s conducting, there’s usually just his car there. If there’s a guest there might be 2, but you should be able to figure out which is Williams’.

I would imagine though, with Tanglewood, that if a security person had seen us, and had been in the right mood, they probably would have stopped us from going back there – so just give it a shot, but I make no promises that it will work!

However, even if Williams doesn’t come out, and you can’t get around to the lot, stick around the right side of the Shed. A different year we were there, and I was at the right side after a concert when I saw a short, shaggy-haired man in a komono. It was Seji Ozawa, watching the fireworks! I walked up to him, shook his hand and thanked him for a great concert. He was very nice, talked with me for a minute, and then we enjoyed watching the fireworks together. I was kicking myself for leaving my camera and stuff with the rest of my family.

In any event – it’s possible to meet these people – just go for it!

I took that risk. At least I put this IRC to the envelope hoping that someone would have eventually sent it back to me, if - by any chance - this mail had been received by someone else.

"GH" has always meant much to me. :) When I bought it, I had very few JW albums (let alone that it has also been the first time when I heard some of his greatest themes). Now I listen to it rarely, but because of this authograph, this is still the most important item in my collection.

That's just the address of Boston Symphony Hall.

I didn't know that :)

In any event – it’s possible to meet these people – just go for it!

It's a pity that many events take place on the other side of the World

I'm not the kind of guy that gets too "star-struck" as they say, and I'm not too big on getting autographs. But JW is a different story. That's one autograph I'd worship forever. I'm bringing my ESB on vinyl for him to sign next time.

There was this one time in band camp, JW signed a girls butt with his own baton...

I'm assuming you're going to the Hollywood Bowl concerts. If so, there's a live rehearsal on the morning of the first performance date (rarely on the second) that's free and open to the public that you should attend. That's the only way you'll get Johnny to sign anything. After the rehearsal's done, go to the rear of Stage Right -- the artist's entrance -- and wait there. Johnny's assistant, James, a short fellow in glasses, might help you if there's not too many people waiting for him with 24 things to sign. Show him what you have, tell him where you came from, and he might either go get Johnny to come out or escort you in if there's not many people waiting. Good luck and enjoy the show!
