I am planning on going this year, anyone else? I heard a rumor that there are morning rehersal open to the public. Anyone know anything about this? Does anyone know if this is an event where it is possible to meet Williams afterwards? Thanks.

There will probably be an open rehearsal on Friday September 1st, starting at 10am.

The chances of meeting Williams after the concert itself are nil unless you have arranged something in advance (or if you have a skateboard signed by everyone else involved in Star Wars apart from John Williams).

Has anyone heard any word on those 10am open rehersals. Thats really the seller for me and I would want to know with a reasonable level of certainty. Will the rehersals be conducted by Williams?

From the Bowl's website:

Program:

Jaws, Star Wars, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Jurassic Park – with his many memorable scores John Williams has changed the course of film music. Be on hand when the composer of three of AFI’s Greatest Film Scores (named at the Bowl last year) celebrates the music of the movies, including classics by Alfred Newman and Bernard Herrmann, plus selected film clips on the Bowl’s big screens.

Pretty vague, but it's something.

Hollywood Bowl confirms, rehersals start at 9:30 Friday morning. So who is all going. We should have a JWFan luncheon or something. I can't believe that 95 hours from now I will see John Williams!

This year will be my first at the Hollywood Bowl. How early should I arrive for parking?

Parking at the bowl itself is pretty much impossible (really). Your best bet is to go to the H&H parking building (where the Kodak Theatre is), park there, then ride the Hollywood Bowl shuttle to the bowl.

One thing I learned from last time is that when you go outside the mall in search of the shuttle bus there ISN'T a sign indicating which bus is the Hollywood Bowl bus. I had to walk down the steps and nose around before seeing the Bowl staff standing outside the bus (wearing dark green knits shirts) accepting money in exchange for tickets for the shuttle. So, in other words, don't expect it to be very obvious. There's signs in the mall that tell you what to do/where to go for the Hollywood Bowl. It was funny because I could tell who was at the mall just waiting to go to the Bowl, because they had a bewildered look on their faces.

One more thing: the way the shuttles work, just as soon as the concert's over, you pretty much have to high-tail it back to the bus, because there's a very small window of time from the concert's end until the bus's departure.

Hope this helps. I would've liked to have known about this stuff last year, when I attended for the first time! It's awesome, I can hardly wait too! Friday.....FRIDAY!!!!!!

Thanks! Luckily I'm familiar with that parking facility, so it shouldn't be too hard finding my way. Sucks that you need money for the shuttle. How much is the shuttle?

i'll be there for the saturday show for sure. this'll be my 7th consecutive year and i look forward to it every time. we went all out and tracked down garden boxes this year. Figured we better do it once before we croak (because we all know Williams never will). Hopefully i'll get some good pics (and maybe a decent recording :D) now.

i think it's about $5, well worth it.

Yes, I think it's maybe $6. By the way, if you do get good pics PLEASE share them. I'm going to be a little too far away for my camera to get anything close-up. Two more days!

I will be attempting to record this on my new camcorder. No promises on either the quality of the video/audio, or whether or not the battery lasts for the whole show. I'll keep the boards posted.

And $5 for the shuttle isn't bad. For some reason I expected it to be higher.

Actually, Tanglewood was my practice run, and there was a lot of background noise where I was sitting on the lawn (people insist on bringing their children  , and my battery ran out in the middle of the Star Wars Suite () ,and I really can't afford a spare (double :()

Just got home from the first concert. Williams brought out his "greatest hits"- the crowd was definitely loving it. Yes, I can die happy now that I've heard Superman in concert. ;)

Here were the Williams pieces performed:

Flight from Neverland

Jurassic Park suite

Memoirs of a Geisha suite (mostly Sayuri's theme, no soloists. I was hoping for the suite described in the Tanglewood review)

Fiddler on the Roof suite (Bing Wang as soloist was astounding. She received some of the loudest cheers of the night)

Love theme from Superman

Superman march

Jaws

Star Wars main theme

The Raiders March

Flying Theme from E.T.

Encores

Imperial March

Yoda's Theme

Harry's Wondrous World

The Mission

Can't wait to go again tomorrow night :)

While of course any concert by Williams would be a treat, I do wish he'd step outside of regular Boston Pops type programs. He could create a really amazing and unique program, as opposed to doing the same old concert arrangements time and time again. I really don't know why, with all the great music, he limits himself to the same stuff over and over again. Just like Goldsmith- so much amazing music, yet his programs seem so dull compared to what they could be.

I agree that he could do more "branching out" every once in a while, but he knows that most people go to his concerts to hear the "hits" (heck, I'm definitely thrilled to hear them!) People bring light sabers to his Hollywood Bowl concerts, so he basically has to play the Star Wars main title, etc. He likes to please the audience, and the crowd goes wild when they hear his familiar themes, and they lull off when something "different" is being played. Sad, but true. (yesterday while Memoirs was playing, the lady in front of me kept saying, "What is this? What is this? Is this Jaws?? This must be Jaws." I politely corrected her, haha)

I was at Friday's concert, and it was excellent (of course). I loved the classic Hollywood selections, and yes, I too can die now that I've heard the full "Love Theme" from Superman as well as Superman's march! Some guy in the audience was wimpering because the Indiana Jones theme got short shrift, along with the Star Wars Main Title because they were included in the medley, but I knew that it bode well for possible the Imperial March being included in the encores. AND YES!!! It happened. That 74-year-old fella still has a lot of gusto in him. Great stuff. Here are a couple of pics, nothing great, but at least something until somebody who was WAY closer puts their pics up!

Just got back from the Saturday concert- same program as Friday, but the order of the encore pieces was rearranged (Harry's Wondrous World - Yoda's Theme - Imperial March - The Mission).

I must say that I had a lot more fun sitting in the cheaper seats. People were going absolutely nuts in my section, especially during the Imperial March. Our entire row was swaying to the beat. Loved it!!

Bah, I wish there was another concert tomorrow night. I can't wait another year! :)

(I don't have photos or video- hopefully one of those camcorder people in front is a JWFan member!)

i just got back from the saturday concert as well and of course it was great as always. i loved the bernard hermann feature. Seeing the Maestro up close was definately an experience but seeing as how i'm not rich uncle pennybags, it probably won't hold as part of the yearly tradition. I got some pictures but with the longer exposure time at nightand my not-so-stable hands most are kinda blurry, but i'll post some nonetheless tomorrow..er..later today. I also got some video (digital camera, not camcorder) of almost all of the superman march and from the raiders march to the end of the spielberg/lucas suite (including the cool rainbow effect at the end). As for the audio recording, I got a major mic upgrade the day before the concert so I didn't have much time to test and fiddle with it but, while the recording isn't perfect, it's fathoms beyond previous years recordings. And so I leave you with a quick mp3 cut of "Flight from Neverland" so you can get a taste :)

We were there Saturday night. My friends and I flew down from Portland and Seattle just for this concert. We figured since the Maestro rarely tours, especially in our corner of the country, that we had best just bite the bullet and fly down. How right we were in our decision to do so!

My friend and I wanted to try to get JW's autograph and we were told that before the concert was the best time to do so. We asked around and discovered the "artist entrance" door so we waited there with about 8 other people, hoping JW would have time to stop and talk to us. No such luck as a car carrying the Maestro scurried into the underground parking garage. After the concert we saw a number of people at that same location being escorted backstage. One of these days I'll have to find out how to get backstage passes to a JW concert. :)

I loved every single minute of the concert. Waxman, Hermann, etc. was a real treat to hear. The violinist solo during the "Fiddler" piece was breathtaking. However, I think the real treat for me was the second half of the concert. Hearing all of those wonderful themes that Williams has crafted (and I have played throughout my life countless times) was nearly indescribable. The audience was absolutely hillarious and it was impossible to not get caught up with everyone around you and start swaying to Imperial March. My absolute favorite part of the concert, though, was the encore when Williams announced a song from the second film, ESB. I knew so many were expecting Imperial March, but I was really, REALLY hoping for Yoda's Theme, my all time favorite piece. Then he annouced "Yoda's Theme." I've heard that track so many times on my cd player, but to hear it live was extraordinary. Truly one of the most unforgettable experiences of my life, as was the rest of the concert. Venue really plays an importance and while I'm not thrilled about the fact that JW never tours in the Pacific NW, I must admit that NOTHING would have been better than seeing my first JW concert at the Hollywood Bowl. I had the time of my life. ;)

So, I've read that some people recorded this. Any idea if there is or will be an actual video release of the concert? I figured that with so many Bowl cameras on the orchestra that it was possible. Anyone here catch a home video of the concert that they are willing to duplicate? If I could find a recording of the Saturday night concert, that'd be awesome. I'll willing to pay cost for manufacturing and shipping.

I felt proud of myself when I kept telling all the people I went with that the first piece of the 2nd half was from Hook. When Williams mentioned it, half the audience was completely dumb-struck. I was pleased that I knew a majority of the cues. I've come a long way from just my Star Wars/Indiana Jones fanbase. I am a Williams fan. :)

"Really, I was just minding my own business, when I heard this loud noise, looked over, and this guy was causing all of this amazing sound to come a-wooshing outta this giant open sea shell! I grabbed my little camera and took these pics..."

Yeah, I agree. Next time, and THERE WILL be a next time, I'm going to have to come equipped with the real shi*t to take some real pics.

Anybody have anything out there? Whatever you've got, it's gotta be better than mine!

When my wife and I were killing time before the concert, we went to The Grove and I checked out the soundtrack section at the BN. Coincidentally, not only was "Luke and Leia" playing on the speakers, but I actually finally bought the Hook soundtrack! Made it strange when it was performed but didn't appear on the program.

I couldn't make it. It was on my mind this past weekend because I so wanted to go. 2003 was the last one I saw. It was awesome apart from this irritating giant I sat next to who liked to conduct the popular scores.

Any chance of a CDR of this recording? I have a nice trade list.

I'm actually finding the
of this performance hilarious, because the people making the comments are my friend's parents.

Too bad you can't hear me booing the prequel footage. Was this from Friday or Saturday nights performance? And where is the ending of ET?

I watched the clip from last year's Hollywood where Williams contributed to Goldsmith playing the theme from Star Trek The Motion Picture. I thought it was a pretty good performance...all though a tad to fast.

I only took a quick look at the monitors during Star Wars to see if they really were just sticking to the first movie. I should have known better. Ordinarily I ignore the screens (they distract me from the live music). I heard though that it was only the new CG E.T. shown and that it looked like the effects demo reel from 2002. Glad I missed it.

Plus, seeing the lighting inside the Bowl was fantastic.
