Incanus 5,713 Posted November 3, 2013 Share Posted November 3, 2013 Smaug's death would be a logical choice to end the second film but him flying to attack Lake-town would work equally well from the perspective of having a dramatic cliff hanger for the next film. But on the other hand the major villain dying at the onset of the 3rd film would seem almost anticlimactic, much as it did with Saruman in RotK and thus it was excised from the TE. I assume Film 2 includes the threat of Smaug leaving to attack Lake-town as well, but maybe that will be built up at the start of Film 3, as they are recovering from the orc attack.
