The Empire Strikes Back was a case where the sequel was actually as good or even better in terms of acting and directing, than the original.

In fact out of all 6 films it is the best in terms of overall acting and directing.

John Williams delivered a worthy score that expanded upon what began in Star Wars with a great theme for Vader and The Empire, a noble theme for the wisdom of Yoda and a tender theme for Han and Leia's blooming relationship.

The dark tone of the film; the barren landscape of Hoth, the murky swamps of Dagobah and claustrophobic enviroment on Bespin, were all instrumental in setting the story down it's path of despair for Luke and the Rebellion.

You never felt comfortable for Luke, Han and Leia. There was a sense that danger lurked everywhere. Lando was a nice addition to the cast and Frank Oz made you believe Yoda was more than a puppet.

The biggest thumbs up should go to Irvin Kerschner who's direction managed to bring out more in the actors than Lucas ever managed to.

I give equal props to Kerschner, Leigh Brackett, and Lawrence Kasdan. Nice comments about the film. And although it is dark, I liked the humorous touches, and there were many.

Yes the humor wasn't forced and came naturally. I think alot of it had to do with the chemistry between the cast, especially Ford and Fisher.

Leigh Brackett and Lawrence Kasdan deserved credit and we must not forget Gary Kurtz.

And the director.

BTW, it should be The Official 1980 The Empire Strikes Back On Disc 2 Thread.

I gave credit to Kershner in the first post.

Strangely, I find the ESB FX to be the best of the original unaltered trilogy yet I find the SE enhancements of ESB to be the best of the SEs. The FX were flawless in 1980. The SE Hoth battle was left alone, only cleaned up and I really like how Cloud City was opened up. I'm not crazy about the added Wampa scene, but it does not ruin the picture like Greedo firing first.

For the record, I never noticed any of the "flaws" of the Hoth battle until Lucas pointed them out. I still don't see them unless I specifically look for them.

Oh my word this thread is made for me! I Agree with all of above but, I thought that the wampa scene was just fine.

The big statement I would like to make here is PACE !! If they had to muck about with the films in the way a special edition then I thought that Empire in the series got of with it quite lightly. Except for the scene when Vader says “Bring my shuttle!” toward the end of the film. When I saw the special edition for the first time I nearly died. The pace set by the story before hand and along with it of course the music was just killed. I do not care too much about what they did to star wars (Or a new hope, or what ever they want to rename it) but the best film in the entire star wars trilogy was just killed at this moment. How could they do it!! It was not important to the story to add this new crap in. I am sorry but I am having to just stick my headphones on and listen to the original soundtrack and pretended that the special edition for Empire dose not exists, watch the film and you must see what I mean. Yea they cleaned up the effects and sounds and that was great but this must be the cruelest insert ( or poorest enhancement .) Of all the films. Forget who in star wars shot first TAKE MY SHUTTLE AWAY!!!!!
