THat's funny...

We played a piece in orchestra by him...was it Finlandia?

I dunno, but it was written in German I believe...

so his name was spelled "Wactakabnu"

So we have this running joke between a few friends and mine about this so called 'Wactakabnu' and only we know who it really is :-p

Happy Birthday

He died 25 years ago, but he's still alive in our memories, in all the concert halls in the world and in all the music he has inspired (including John Williams'). Thanks so much for all your symphonies, your opera Lady Macbeth, your piano, violin and cello concertos, your sonatas and all the hymns and overtures, maestro!

My favorite classical composer :P

I love his Hamlet score. It's one of the best ever IMO. And his final duel music from this film has more energy than BOTH. Now this is what I call perfect scoring!

I think Williams got some bits for Desert Chase from that score. :P

I'll tell you what....

I've been getting very into Shostakovich lately, mostly in part due to the sheer amount of his pieces that were played at the BBC Proms this year. I had only a passing knowledge of his work until recently, but since then it's been a journey listening to his Symphonies and other orchestral works, especially considering the climate within which he had to compose.

Happy Birthday indeed!

:P 'Symphony No. 10' - Dmitri Shostakovich

EDIT:

The march from the first movement of the 'Symphony No. 7' always sends shivers down my spine - it makes me think of the absurdity of War through the obvious black humor represented in the evolution of the piece.

I believe the German title of Finlandia would be... Finnland?

Indeed. And the piece is basically a hymn for Finland's independence from Russia... attributing it to a Russian composer is a bit ironic. LOL

Actually "Shostakovich" in kyrillic writing looks more like "Woctakobny" than "Wactakabnu" ;)

...not that people 'round these parts usually write in Kyrillic, just to clear things up. ;)

Belated happy birthday, Dmitri Dmitrievich!

Actually, we did quite a bit of celebrating here in Norway, with a concert of his works Monday night. And last weekend saw the premiere of my symphony no.1 (Dmitri Shostakovich in memoriam), with performances on Saturday the 23rd and Sunday the 24th.

Happy brithday!!
