My Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace Special Edition

Hello all,

GoodMusician has done some very excellent work on his Star Wars Episode I Complete Edition indeed. It is as complete as you can get and in excellent sound quality. And it has all cues as seperate tracks, which should make it very easy to use GoodMusician's version as a base version to make a 2-disc special edition soundtrack similar to the ones released by RCA/Victor for the Original Trilogy. And that is exactly what I'm wanting to do. I am nowhere near as good with music editing as many of the other members of this board, but I reckon that with GoodMusician's complete edition, I should be able to do this reasonably well.

At the moment I have not done any editing on this at all yet, because I am trying to decide on the tracklist. I want to make the tracklist similar to the Special Editions for the OT. I don't want to use SFX, nor do I want many alternates. And I want to limit the amount of "double" music as well. So I have been working on making a tracklist for this. Please have a look at the tracklist here. The bold italic text will be the final trackname, while the small text below shows which cues from GoodMusician's complete edition will be used in these tracks. Below the tracklist I have posted some comments of my own and some questions to you all. I hope somebody will be able to help with figuring those out.

Before I get to the actual work on this, I would want to have your comments on my tracklist. I want to make the best version I can and for that I do need comments and perhaps some help as well. Perhaps you know of a better way to make this tracklist? Or maybe there are some tracks you think would go great together? Or perhaps there are some tracks you think should not be used together. Or perhaps you have thought of better tracknames? Every (useful) comment is welcome.

I am going to try to edit this edition as WAV so that it'll have the best sound quality as possible. Once I'm done, I will provide it to anyone who wants it. But please wait with sending the PMs until it's actually done. Which shouldn't take all that long; GoodMusician already did the hard work. ;)

I feel sorry for you guys if the scores that are "rumored" to be released next spring turn out to be the expanded versions done correctly.

All that hard work.... Oh well it's all done with good intentions.

Hey Pieter, if you want the FLAC version for JEDI MASTER QUI-GON GINN'S THEME, it was reupped on the Symphony for a Saga website recently, have at it, and thank you.

cool ideas.

As far as some of your questions:

1 = That's kinda where we think it should be... so... put it there if you'd like. It's eaither that or Pod-racing explosion. Maybe you could see how well of an intro it would work for the podracing music...

2 = The only other option is to take it from the UE but there will be residual evidence from the source music track before it.

4 = I found this file in the a videogame rip. It's longer, but the thing is that it's heavily edited. It starts out with one cue, goes into what you hear there, and then goes into another cue... so no ending is really available past what I made.

5 = Technically, even the film version is lacking. If you watch the film, some of the digoredoo parts still arn't in it. I would use the original (not the percussion and not the film) Or... maybe you could find some way to extend the original with the film version?

6 = You could try doing what they did on the UE with this?

7 = Sorry about the flow problem... since there has been no real release of the vocal-less version, that was the best I could do. If you listen to the normal version, all mine is missing there are the horns which I chose to omit because they would remove from the vocal-less aspect. You could simply end the track at 3:10 and then place something at the end.. in place of the rest...

What you could do is switch the placement of DOTF and Anakins theme to how it is in the real endcredits... and use the Instrumental DOTF up until 3:10 (maybe use a little bit of the echo from the very end of the track as well because it kinda fades out quickly here) and then puyt in anakins them...

Just an idea...

It won't matter, in fact I'll save money because I'll already have the fan made complete versions.

Does anyone have some comments on my tracklisting? Too many tracks? Too few? Too long ones? Too short ones? Tracks edited together that shouldn't be? Tracks not edited together that should be?

I'm not quite certain what to do with the Battle of Naboo tracks. ESB has the pre-battle music in The Battle of Hoth track as well, so I could add The Battle Begins in The Battle of Naboo I as well. I'm not sure if I should edit together all those battle-music at all though. Duel of the Fates and The Droid Battle in the same track? Perhaps I should break up the Battle tracks in some shorter tracks? So that we'd have Battle of Naboo I-IV instead of having two tracks?

Thanks a lot. I tried to download it yesterday, but the link had expired. I'll try again. :)I hope you're OK with me adding your concert suite to my edit. I like it a lot and I think it'd be a great addition. :|

I'm going to see if I can put it somewhere where it works well and doesn't interrupt the flow of the music. If not, I simply won't add it to my edition.
2 = The only other option is to take it from the UE but there will be residual evidence from the source music track before it.
I have some tracks from an edit made by Delorean90 and it does have a clean opening there. I can send it to you if you like. But it's not FLAC. Anyway: I edit it together with the previous track, so I hope this will not be a problem at all.
4 = I found this file in the a videogame rip. It's longer, but the thing is that it's heavily edited. It starts out with one cue, goes into what you hear there, and then goes into another cue... so no ending is really available past what I made.
Would it be possible to "loop" or "extend" the final note? This is pretty important because it's the final track on Disc 1 (minus the source cues) and it does end very sudden at the moment. :?
5 = Technically, even the film version is lacking. If you watch the film, some of the digoredoo parts still arn't in it. I would use the original (not the percussion and not the film) Or... maybe you could find some way to extend the original with the film version?
If you listen to the film version on your edit, you hear something that seems like part of the original version at the very end. This suggests to me that both were edited together at one point. So intent to do the same again so that I can use both the original version and the film/percussion version. At the moment I think I'll use the percussion version.
6 = You could try doing what they did on the UE with this?
Thanks for the suggestion. I'll check what it's like on the UE.
7 = Sorry about the flow problem... since there has been no real release of the vocal-less version, that was the best I could do. If you listen to the normal version, all mine is missing there are the horns which I chose to omit because they would remove from the  vocal-less aspect. Those are some good ideas. I'm going to try a few ideas and see what works best. I was thinking of re-inserting the choral part at the 3:10 mark on the instrumental version, because I'm not actually calling it instrumental, but it's a part of the End Credits instead. Whatever I end up doing, the End Credits will probably be a complete fantasy of my own and have nothing to do with what John Williams had originally intended. But for all I know John Williams intended to use the concert versions like in the film and really I don't want to do that because they'll already be on my edit somewhere else.
lol... not to mention I don't think any release will be as complete as what I made.
That much is for certain. ;)

Did you move the page with the tracklisting? I'm not getting anything when I click on the link anymore. Says it can't be found...
That is odd. It's still working fine for me. Please try again. Or perhaps reboot your computer and try again. I see no reason why it shouldn't work. :?

Do a Special Edition Listing for Episode II and III. Iwould like to see what this would look like.

I will do this for Episode II and III as well, but there's no point in doing it before GoodMusician has finished his work on those episodes, because I base my version(s) on his work. In the meantime, I have started the editing work on Episode I and I'm at about 75%. I think it's going reasonably well. Once I got my first version done, I'll send it to some people to get some feedback. Putting "Run In With Jar Jar" at the end of "The Droid Invasion" works surprisingly well.

First version done

I have finished my edit and I think it turned out quite well, though I might go back and improve some of my edits after I got some feedback. I found it very hard to judge whether my edits are good or whether they are too early or too late, so feedback on this would be most appreciated. I'll upload it if there are people interested. PM me if you would like to give it a listen and give me some feedback.

I have also made some covers for Star Wars Episode I-III Special Editions. Please tell me what you think. I tried to make them in the same style as the covers of the Episode IV-VI Special Editions. I know people have been complaining that those looked like bad Photoshop jobs. However, unlike with the Episode IV-VI covers, mine really ARE bad Photoshop jobs. Or maybe they're not so bad. I think they turned out reasonably well, considering that I am not impressively good with Photoshop. ;)

If you like them, feel free to use them for your own edits as well. If you want I can change the text on the cover for you. Maybe replace "Original Motion Picture Soundtrack" with "Complete Motion Picture Soundtrack"? Perhaps add some text that you made the edit? I have been unable to find the picture of Anakin and Padmé embracing in a reasonably resolution, so I couldn't use that. I'm not sure it would fit with the other covers either. But if anyone finds that picture in a reasonably high resolution, I might have a go at it for you. :P

Has anyone listened to my Special Edition edit? Or is anyone else interested? I would most appreciate some comments on my work; I want to be able to make a better version, but I can't as long as I don't get any comments.

A question to all people doing music editing: Which programs do you use? I used Sony Sound Forge 7.0 for this edit. But I don't really find that a very good program to use. Does a program exist where you can edit your edits easily? The way I do it, I simply do a mix with the next cue, but that way, when I want to improve the edit, I have to do it all over again. Is there some better way?

Y'know...

I use Acid for my edits. With the volume envelopes, its real easy to do a multi-point fade, and when looping, I just duplicate the track and fade in / out where needed. That's how I extend many endings and beginnings. In addition, while the feature won't be used by most...the +/- key easily transposes tracks.

Its a slightly clunky program...and sometimes gets bogged down and I need to save and restart the program...but it works nicely. The plug-ins and an adjustable FX envelope make for easy mastering if needed.

Plus, to change an edit...all you have to do is lock the envelopes to the tracks and drag the whole project along the timeline...pretty easy when you have the hang of it.

I'll listen to this as soon as I get a chance...i'm pretty darn busy most days.

I've been using Adobe Audition 2 for all of my editing lately. I like it and it's fairly straightforward and easy to use. Also I can just save a session file to go back and clean up any edits without having to start over from scratch.

Sorry I haven't had a chance to listen to your edit yet, real life has slowed me down a bit lately. I hope to have a chance to sit down and listen to it soon.
