The Great Directorial Puzzle: The Composer

BLUMENKOHL

Recommended Posts

You are directing a series of films, each from a different genre.  It is time to pick who will score each of your movies, with one catch.

You can use each film composer only once.

Your movies are from the following genres:

Horror:

Drama:

Action/Adventure:

Sci-Fi:

Comedy:

Mystery:

Romance:

Fantasy:

...Time is money in Hollywood, so you'd better find your composers fast.

Guidlines: You can use any composer you'd like for each genre, BUT YOU MAY ONLY USE HIM/HER ONLY ONCE

The composers can be living or dead, but keep in mind, your movies will be coming out in the contemporary timeline, as in, within the next 5 years, so picking Miklos Rozsa to score your modern cyberpunk techno-scifi movie might be a bit...insane.

Horror: Hans Zimmer

Reason: I don't care about horror films and I don't care about Hans Zimmer either

With his usual MV music, he can probably make any good horror film extremely not-scary, which is exactly how I like my horror films

Drama: Howard Shore

Reason: I only ever heard LotR of his, but it seems to me it is more like dramatic music than fantasy music

Modern Action: Jerry Goldsmith

Reason: Jerry Goldsmith is very good at writing action music for modern action films, such as Air Force One

Fun Seek-the-treasure Adventure: John Williams

Reason: INDIANA JONES!

Pirate Film: Alan Silvestri

Reason: Bring us Silvestri's PotC!!!

Epic Historical Adventure: Basil Poledouris

Reason: Conan, Flesh & Blood, need I say more?

Sci-Fi: David Arnold

Reason: Is pretty good at writing Sci-Fi music, such as for Stargate and Independence Day

Comedy: John Debney

Reason: He writes music for comedies all the time. Though I would prefer to hire him for an action film with occasional comedy

Mystery: Harry Gregson-Williams

Reason: Let's give him something new to do

Romance: James Horner

Reason: I don't care about romantic films and I don't care about James Horner either. His music does sound very romantic most of the time, so he'd probably be quite able to to it

Fantasy: James Newton Howard

Reason: Although he hasn't yet scored a big fantasy movie such as Harry Potter or Narnia, I'm sure he would do a great job at it

You can use any composer you'd like... ....BUT YOU MAY ONLY USE HIM/HER ONLY ONCE

Only one composer... thats easy, John Williams.

Spielberg can do it, i will too :(

And i chose once, without double thinking it or changing for another composer :P

Horror: Bernard Hermann (The pioneer in this area)

Drama: George Fenton (thanks for reminding me Tim - the Shadowlands, Gandhi, so many other good drama scores)

Action/Adventure: Joel McNeely (Would love to see him back in live-action, think Terminal Velocity, Virus, AFO cues, SOTE of course...)

Sci-Fi: Jerry Goldsmith!! (Trek anyone?)

Comedy: Alan Silvestri (Love Stuart Little, Richie Rich, etc)

Mystery: James Newton Howard (Tough pick, but he's strongest here)

Romance: John Barry (He writes gorgeous love themes)

Fantasy: John Williams (Hook and Potter, perfect examples)

This is really hard! I wanted JW for Romance and Goldsmith for Action, too.

Well, I'd make my favorites flex their muscles in genres they haven't explored full-blown but hinted at in tehir scores. Then I'd use the others as fillers.

Horror: Danny Elfman

Drama: James Newton Howard

Action/Adventure: Jerry Goldsmith

Sci-Fi: Bernard Herrmann

Comedy: Hans Zimmer

Mystery: Eh. I'll call the Newman family and see who's available.

Romance: Georges Deleure (yeah, I copied Mark)

Fantasy: John Williams

Well, similarly to Ross, I'd hire my favorite composers to write scores for the genres you'd least imagine them. Notice that James Horner is not on the list, as, let's face it, I will most probably be forced to reject at least a couple of these scores for being totally wrong, and Horner will have his hands full replacing up to eight scores in as many hours (I'm very demanding that way).
