Sandor 796 Posted January 17, 2007 Share Posted January 17, 2007 The "Tomatometer" speaks for itself, Stephen King called it "the best movie of the year" and the universal praise is enourmous. I saw the film yesterday. I thought it was absolutely incredible (although I realised that fully a few hours after seeing it). The setting is fantastic! Even though the film takes place in limited surroundings, the "world" of the film becomes a truly special one. And I'm not merely refering to the "magical" world Ofelia discovers. The "Faun-creature" is amazing. Partly CGI, partly make-up, but at times it's hard to tell where the make-up ends and the CGI starts. Works great!This is by no means a "kids-movie". The violent is among the most brutal I've seen in a movie. I saw The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning one day before Pan and thought it was pretty shocking. I never expected Pan's Labyrinth to actually top the violence of Chainsaw! But don't let the violence in this movie turn you off! It's presented in a "Schindler's List" sort of way: it gives certain scenes and characters meaning and is used to enhance the emotional core of the film. Sergi Lopez plays the evil Captain Vidal. What an amazing, effective role. His character will haunt me for a long time. I'm not sure yet if Pan's Labyrinth is my favorite movie of 2006. I still need to see 300 and Children Of Men. Absolutely worth watching, though it could have been less violent. On the other hand violence there isn't just for its own purpose, nor to shock. I'm shocked the first two aren't here because I live in a city where easily more than half of the population are native Spanish speakers or speak it fluently.That said, The Queen and Children of Men are tied as the two best movies of 2006. New-release DVDs and soundtracks especially (as it happens, the two things I buy most of).In a store, new release soundtracks from companies like Varese Sarabande often cost £14.99! I was never able to get a new soundtrack for less than $20, generally closer to $25. I just today bought Morricone's Fateless for about $13. It's no masterpiece, and certainly not up there with Saving Private Ryan or Platoon in terms of great War films, but it was interesting and held my attention the whole way through. I would give it ***/****. I saw it when it first came out here in the US, but the feeling and emotional rub-off I got from it quickly dissipated after I left the theater. It's a good way to judge a film, basing it on how much it means to you, how much it makes you think and whether or not you are in some way influenced or affected by it. It looked like it was going to be long, ponderous, and boring, but I'm enthusiastic after the good reviews it's been getting. The Prestige was the most dissapointing film I've seen this year. It's close to the best move of the year, certainly one of them, but I would rank it second behind Children of Men.
