    • I hate John Williams' music. Actually, I'm not really sure why I'm on this forum.

I'm kinda' suprised that no one has chosen the last option. You know, just to throw people off.

Also Option 2. He's by far my favorite film composer, but not absolute favorite composer. I have favorites lists for film and classical composers, separately. Classical favorites are Wagner, Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich, Stravinsky, Beethoven, Haydn, Sibelius, Elgar, Rimsky-Korsakov, Prokofiev, Ravel. I like him as much as some of these, but consider film composing a separate genre.

He's my favorite composer. Much of this has to do with the opportunities he has been given and what he has made of them. He has such a wealth of great music behind him now, moreso than any other composer I have ever known of. I know that technically, Mozart and Beethoven are also 'great" and wrote many hours of music, but they never wrote anything like "The Abduction of Barry" or something like "One Barrel Chase". Its his diverse yet unified body of mainly effective work that makes him my favorite. Also, his very best moments are the greatest music I have ever heard.

I was just curious for how many of you John Williams is your absolute favorite composer, as opposed to just another really good composer.

It's either him or Brahms. Hard to say, really, though I am certainly much more obsessive about tracking down Williams music and information than I am for that of Brahms. The thing I love about both of them is that I always hear something different every time - there's always another layer, or another way that the different voices interact with one another, such that you could spend an entire year studying a major work and still not be bored at the end of it. But it's Williams and Brahms, and everybody else is way back there in the dust.

There are certain composers that I could not say Williams is better than. And I'd say that Alex North and Ennio Morricone are a little better than him.

Morricone has plenty of quality, but what he is best at is originality.

Don't get me wrong, but (as much as I like his latest scores) the man hasn't come up with anything original in the last 2 decades. I don't perceive any significant evolution in Morricone, something vital for any artist.
