Is The Sail Barge Assault climax essentially the same melody as...

...the later Death Star destruction celebration fanfare?

This has to be old news, but I've only just noticed it. The celebration fanfare as the Death Star explodes sounds like a simplified version of the music that plays earlier when the 'crew' escape from the the Pit of Sarlacc. Am I wrong in this discovery?

I only noticed because I was humming them both in work today... as you do.

Truth be told, I lost my ROTJ 2-CD set when I moved out seven years ago. It wasn't precisely my favorite score so I've been procrastinating buying it again ever since.

Yeah, I know.

That motif at the end of Sail Barge Assault is longer and more involved than the one that accompanies the second Death Star's destruction, but the latter is certainly derived from the former, or vice versa. They both share that iii v iv# ii i motif in the melody, using nearly identical rhythms. The orchestration is different, as is the time signature, but they're the same musical idea in different clothing.

Wow, some of the ROTJ tracks have even worse sound quality than I thought. Headphones make the problem even worse--the muffling of the treble end is even more apparent. It's really hideous that this score would be released with such inferior quality, though I admit that I'm glad it was ROTJ rather than another Star Wars score.

yeah but Dark side Beckons.wouldn't it be nice wif we could have a very clean version where we could hear the strings and the choir more distinctly

Yeah, like if had ended up on the Musical Journey DVD. Everything on there sounds better than ever before.

John- glad this thread was saved from the abyss

I always felt that the climax of both the Sail Barge Assault and the 1997 "Celebration" music were derived from the Luke & Leia theme, aka "Brother and Sister". To me this theme, while not use as extensively in ROTJ as some of the other themes, i,e, "Parade of the Ewoks", "Jabba The Hutt" or "The Emperor's Theme", appeared to be the basis of this music for these 2 bits of music.

Just so you all know, I attempted making this video with the alternate in the film, but sooo much editing had been done to the film that it didn't fit at all... I tried editing it and figuring out what exactly was changed but I grew too confused and boggled really that I gave up.

As for the question at hand, I think it makes sense to use it in both instances. It's almost a celebratory theme in a way/explosion of bad gut theme heh

I never thought about that, but you're absolutely right. I don't know whether or not that was intentional, but there's a definite melodic link there...how interesting!

Most definitely agreed. There's so much material I'd love to have heard on that DVD...although, I must say, the horns are mixed quite weirdly in the Imperial March. Too loud, IMO.
