The Big Bad Top Gear Thread

Although I must say I found the polar special ended a bit lamely. So they got to the North Pole... then what? ^_^

They got to the North Pole in a converted road car, and you don't think that is impressive?

I would have like to see Hammond and Team Dog finish though.

It's not that it wasn't impressive. I just felt their story wasn't completed. I wanted to know how they got back and if Team Dog ever made it.

Some details regarding series 10

SPOILER ALLERT!!!!

* Currently scheduled to air from October 7th, 2007.[7]

* Various news stories and the presenters in their own newspaper columns have made references to features and locations visited during filming for the upcoming series:

o As a follow-up to the Series 8 challenge, the presenters will make 'more refined versions' of the amphibious vehicles that the presenters made in series 8 episode 3, and take them to Dover on 18 July, apparently to attempt a crossing of the English Channel.[8]

o In early July 2007, the Top Gear team went to Botswana, where they went out to do some driving on the Makgadikgadi Pan. It was there they faced controversy, being accused by conservationists of "leaving scars across the Makgadikgadi salt pans by driving vehicles across them." The BBC denied that they had gone near any conservation areas, and had followed the advice of several environmental experts.[9]

o On Tuesday 7th September, Richard Hammond reported to the press that he had been in a second crash while filming for Series 10 of Top Gear. The presenters were competing in a 24 hour race at Silverstone.[10]

o Richard Hammond will finally get to drive the Bugatti Veyron as he races the worlds fastest road car against a Typhoon Fighter Jet at R.A.F. Coningsby, Linconshire. [11]

o After planting a field's worth of bio-fuel in Series 9, the presenters and Stig participated in the Britcar 24hr, a Le Mans-style 24 hour endurance race at Silverstone Circuit, in early September 2007. They used a BMW 3 Series running on the aforementioned bio-fuel. [12]

o The team will return to the Isle of Man with The Stig at some point during Series 10.

o According to an interview with James May in Second Life, Series 10 will have 10 episodes.

o Also James May stated in a Top Gear magazine interview that there was a 1275cc engine challenge .[13]

o Dame Helen Mirren has been confirmed as series 10's first star in a reasonably priced car[14]

Thank you, I reconized it from somewere, but it's sooo generic I just could not figure out were it's from.

[edit]

OK the new season has started. pretty good opener.

Liked James in the Aston, liked thew bonkers Golf GTI with the Bentley engine and loved Dame Hellen Mirren.

Hammond's new haircut make James May look more atractive then ever though. Maybe the accident made him more emo then we first suspected.

As for the music the cues used in the scenes were they drive the perfect swiss/italian road are pretty good. I think both have been used on Top Gear before though.

What was that piece when they found the perfect road? I thought it might have been Evey Cries from V for Vendetta, but I'm not sure.

Watched it yesterday. Wonderful. Driving in 3 brightly coloured cars through areas of Europe this time, and funny as ever. That show really has hit a perfect formula for catching the interest of many people. I don't have the slightest interest in cars at all, but since that hilarious journey they did in the states on an earlier series, the whole travelling theme with the cars really hooked me. This kind of grown up "stand by me" theme of heading off in cars together and doing Boyish things. Great ;)

Suggest the originator of this thread change the thread title and the other thread be amalgamated with this one!

I have finally had a chance to watch the first episode of the new season......very, very good and I do like the fact that the series as a whole is maturing even though the presenters are not! Compare this episode with one from the very first season and you'll see what I mean, I hope.....

Greg - still trying to find out where the version of "Going The Distance" (Conti) used in the Ice Dance sequence from the Winter Olympics is from.....

Season one was not nearly as good because they had not yet figured out the formula, the report between Clarkson and Hammond had not yet vormed and there was no James May.

Also, the Stig was black!

You mean the music in the scene were Jeremy is (trying) to drive a Jaguar on a track made on a frozen lake? I want that cue badly!

Yep - that's the bugger.....I have tried to find out where it's from with no success......

Some nice music too, noticed Casino Royale, Jaws and ofcourse The Raiders March. :)

Yeah I noticed Raiders :P

To me, they've got the "Mr Hooper, Quint, and Brodie" combination down well.

I think that is why it is so good. That combination of characters always competing with each other.

Don't know why he hs suddenly started being quite so vitriolic about them, but that was a great episode - a worthy sequel.....but I just can't help wondering now how much of these challenges are being set up.....

After the furore in the English TV world recently about faked phone-in comp results etc etc, Top Gear was not exempt, after it was "leaked" that the caravanning episode was largely set-up, particularly the fire. Now, of course, most of us with more than 3 brain-cells knew this already, however it does tend to make you wonder just how much of each new episode is being faked for the sake of entertainment.

First of all, you are right. it would take only 3 braincells to figure out that parts of the caravan episode were staged, but isn't that the point of the show? (not to mention that the newspapers would problably have a field day with Top Gear if it were real)

It's an entertainment show, largely.

I don't have a problem with a show staging or enhancing something is it enhances my enjoyment of it.

Things that are obviously staged:

The Stig being arrested by the Fife police in their kit-car challenge.

Setting fire to a brand new car-wash.

Clarkson did not find a dead cow at the side of the road and tied it onto the roof.

Etc...etc...etc...

But Richard Hammond did really crash in his rocket car.

They did send a mini of a ski-ramp.

They did launch a Reliant Robin

They did get a Toyota Hilux to the North Pole.

etc...etc...

Indeed - but that is becoming part of the problem....the line is becoming too fuzzy for me......are they really telling me that piece of shit made it across the channel? This does not stop it being one of the most entertaining shows on telly at the moment, however.....just a bummer we gotta wait 2 week for the next one while some people who advertise gambling knock balls into a pocket.....

I have no problem believing that. If a small motorboat can do it, then why not a Nissan.

Another example of slight exageration is the episode were they host a local radio show. The TV episode suggest it was a total disaster, while the actual radio broadcast shows an incredibly messy, amateurish, but entertaining show.

It was however broadcast on a BBC Local Radio Station, which are governed by strict codes of practise regarding content, impartiality etc etc etc and that's what our license fee pays for.....the Top Gear Radio Show (thanks for that link, by the way!!) broke several of the rules and had they been regular presenters they would have been sacked....probably before the end of the show....but of course that didnt stop it being bloody hilarious.....

Of course, the Top Gear crew are no strangers to a little controversy, especially when they light up pipes in the sudio and flout the English Smoking Ban!!!

Some people have nothing better to do than have a whinge about something......guess they haen't heard of the "Off" switch!!

Another good one. This week they spend more time actually reviewing cars, which might bore some people, but it's what the show is really about.

The Peel segment was indeed hilarious, that Rolls looked icey cool and Hammonds Veyron segment was actually exciting, as always I was rooting for the Bugatti.

Just seen this episode - another good'un....I have been to Peel and seen a couple of those micro-machines, but not one in action - and the race was phenomenal.....and who WASN'T roting for the Veyron??

Brilliant!

Brilliant...Brilliant...Brilliant...Brilliant.

Oliver was fantastic, as was the impending fate of having to drive a beetle to Namibia.

Lot's of Once Upon A Time In The West in this episode and I was astonished to hear a bit of Brian May's (no relation) The Road Warrior.

Beautifully photographed too.

One of my fav things were the 3 skulls bolted to Jeremy's Lancia. :D

Yep - fantastic challenge.....Oliver was so cool but I had to roar with laughter when it had a bit of a problem with the Ford

Favourite moment though was seeing it come back to life and Jezza'a reaction!

Just saw this on BBC3 over weekend, brilliant stuff! Spot on Marc, you missed 633 Squadron though.

Shame that the horrible Prague Phil versions of Raiders & 633 were used!

Have just watched the episode with the race to Monte Carlo with Jezza in a DB9....anyone know what that bit of music is as the second segment of the race starts? I think I remember it in the Audi vs Rock Climber race too....? 3-note rising motif (occasionally with accompanying choir).....I'm sure I should know it but I don't......

EDIT: Maybe about time we had a posting on here giving some serious TG music lists, huh? Just a thought.....

Nice sparring between Clarkson and Simon Cowell, who sadly retook his position as fastest celeb.

The race was fab, especially the Stig using piblic transport was hilarious.

Some nice use of African Rundown.

What was that music playing during the last climactic part of the race?

Link to comment

No idea what that music was, but would like to know too.....

The race was a good'un - and watching the boys trying to justify the existence of Top Gear due to the fact that that car came last was hysterical! And the man on jet-powered roller skates? N-U-T-T-E-R!!!!

Incidentally - it appears that this season is to be slightly longer than the somewhat brief 9th season.....there are 3 more recording days scheduled and since each episode is recored in one day that should equate to a further 3 episodes.
