I posted this at the FSM board, but I thought people here might be interested too:

Fans of "Casino Royale" might want to know, the film version of "You Know My Name," which was different from the CD-single version released last fall, has finally been released. It's on Chris Cornell's new solo album, "Carry On". It was on his myspace page last year, just before the movie came out, so I figured it would be his album version.

I just compared it to the opening credits. Identical, except that they cut out one verse because the full song is 4:00 long.

There are two easy ways to tell the versions apart. In the old version, the lyric went "I've seen diamonds cut through harder men..." In the film version, the lyric is "I've seen *this* diamond cut through harder men..." Also, in the old version when he sings "The odds will betray you", the first two notes are the same. In the film version, the notes rise.

I just compared the film version ripped from the DVD with a download of the Carry On version.

They are not the same, the mix is very differently.

For instance in the opening, on the Carry On version, the electric guitar is the most prominent instrument, pretty much drowning out the horns. In the film version the brass is far more prominent.

Nothing difficult about getting the film version of anything that has no SFX or dialog under it...

Anyway, I just got a .flac of this and right from the start the mix is very different. The bass is almost gone and you can hear a light guitar, strings and brass much more clearly. The tune is also subtly different. I'm preferring the 'normal' version right now, but this might grow on me :D

Yup the film version is definitely the best.

But I was wondering if this is then the same version as the pop mix on the single? Sounds like it. Because I don't know if the first post considers the single as 'released'.

I count these different versions now:

- Main Version (Single + German Single)

- Pop Mix = Album version (German single + Carry On + myspace (low quality))

- Film Version (DVD)

- Rock mix (myspace - low quality)

Ummm...that looks like 2 versions to me, the film version and the German single, Carry On, Myspace version...

I don't like the film version. Vocals are mixed too low, and the electric guitar doesn't pack much punch. Hopefully this new release corrects that. And aren't we forgetting the music video version (available on disc 2 of the DVD)? It has more prominent string chords and an acoustic guitar instead of a second electric guitar.

I agree that the new Carry On version is mixed differently from the film version. However, I'm convinced they're the same recording. I listened to the Carry On version and the opening credits at the same time on my headphones and they matched exactly, except for the missing verse in the opening credits.

The Carry On version is clearly the same as the one that was on Chris Cornell's myspace page back in the fall. I assume it's the same as the second version on the German CD single, which I could never find. I don't know about any third or fourth versions out there.

I thought the music video version was the 'main version', as found on the regular single.

So the four categories I posted still hold I presume. (If you take into account that my film version is the same as the pop mix, but a significantly different mix).

Hmm. Don't know. I didn't buy the single, but I downloaded a CD-quality WAV file of "You Know My Name" (after finding many MP3s of the same thing) that featured a prominent electric guitar mix and no acoustic guitar. Then, I ripped the song from my Casino Royale DVD (disc 2, the music video) and noticed that the strings are more prominent and that an acoustic guitar does some of the comping rather than a second electric guitar. Then there's the film version, which is different from both, with much more prominent brass at the beginning and vocals mixed low. Anyway, I assume this WAV file I downloaded is the "main version" from the single because it was mostly what was available on file-sharing programs.

I stand corrected. I just listened to the music video version and I think it's the pop mix indeed. So:

- Main Version (Single + German Single)

- Rock mix (myspace - low quality)

- 'Pop Mix' = Album version (German single + Carry On + myspace (low quality) + music video)

- Film Version (DVD) (same version as pop mix but different 'mix')

It was on the myspace thing very briefly. Bad quality though.(96 kbps). It's basically only Cornell and co, without any orchestra mixed in.

Makes you appreciate Arnold's orchestration even more, though.
