Not sure they got that thirteenth note right though ;)

I noticed that too. That Der-Dum should be one spot to the right. Someone should be axed for that blunder!

It's not that a shark will eat you, it's that it could. It's the same with any fearsome animal.

I'm concerned by the silly panic this is creating.

The number of people injured seriously by a shark in a given year is usually less then the number of fingers on a human hand.

The shark is a remarkable creature.

Steef, can you please show some respect? You know how sensitive some can be here.

I once read some statistics that showed vending machines have caused more fatalities than shark attacks.

Yes, especially when they fall over on top of you.

Steef is right. The problem with this type of sensationalist nonsense is that every idiot with a boat and gun will start killing sharks, especially great whites which are already pretty scarce in terms of world population. My feeling is, if you want to swim, try a lake or pool. Otherwise you're taking your chances swimming in the sea where it is the shark's domain.

Sometimes the entitlement of humans sickens me.

Im slightly disturbed by the inaccurate post by our grand master.

There have been several serious shark attacks this year, several in the US, several fatalities world wide. Third world countries like india suffer numerous shark attacks that are not reported as shark attacks, yet the occasional remains of the "drowing" victim show massive bite wounds.

The truth is Great Whites, Tigers, and Bulls eat people. They do it because we taste good.

Anyway, if i ever are attacked by a shark i hope to hear the Williams motif or i'll be dissapointed...

Well, I suppose there are worse things to hear in your final moments.

Are you implying that there are better things to hear while being hunted by a shark?

Like the sound of a rescue boat?

Yes, like "There's a shark swimming up behind you, Get out of the water!!!!!!"

So, if a shark eats you it's your fault?

Well, you have the choice to swim in the ocean. Sharks are part of the ecology of the ocean. And it's not like they have a personal vendetta against humans.

Also, Joey, once again you are so wrong. in most cases, a shark attack fatality is due to blood loss, not consumption. Humans are NOT part of the food staples of a shark's diet. There's plenty of data to substantiate this. In most cases a shark mistakes a diver for seals or else a person splashing for a fish in distress. Many times, the shark will bite, realize it's a person, then let go. If you're attacked by a 20 foot great white shark, of course the initial trauma to your body would probably be pretty severe and hence, you would be dead. But we do NOT taste good to sharks.

BTW, the Great White is not the top predator of the ocean. Orcas are. And I've seen some pretty grusome footage of an Orca attack on a Great White in San Francisco. The killer whale made minced meat out of the shark.

Another study showed that when a pod of killer whales showed up at the Farallon Islands of Northern Califronia, a known great white breeding/feeding spot, all of the great whites took off for the hills. Ichthyologists tracked one as far as Hawaii.

Yeah, I guess if you find science boring, you can always ignore it and think what you want.

Correct.

But there are cases when a shark does eat the victim. I may be wrong but aren't Bull & Tiger sharks more likely to attack and eat a human than a Great White?

Bull sharks attack more people because they are smaller and come into the shallows to feed, normally in 4 ft of water where bathers like children like to play. Bulls and Tigers are aggressive and they are what you call garbage eaters- they will eat anything. But ths should not be confused with "preferring" eating humans. In most cases, people are eaten after they have died already, so the shark is basically scavenging off of the corpse rather than being the cause of death. When Joe said people in India drown but their bodies reveal shark bites, this is because the sharks are opporunistic feeders and will take bites off of inanimate meat.

Once again Joe shows us that he is very talking out of your ass is not the wisest thing to do.

The number of shark attacks compared to the number of people who swim in waters were dangerous sharks are known to excist shows that sharks do not consider the human a prey item.

Of those unfortunate people who are attacks, most are only bitten, not eaten. Sharks, possesing no limbs, use an elaborate array of senses in and near their mouth to investigate things they do not reconize.

As far as I'm concerned Great Whites coming to european Waters is fantastic news.

Thank goodness for Global Warming.

That's like saying it's your fault if you get shot because you choose to live a bad neighborhood.

Well there's always the chance that something bad could happen to you, no matter where you are. But you can do your best to lessen that chance by, for example, not living in a bad neighborhood, not swimming in the ocean, etc.

Yes the LSO bursting out of the water in a submarine and start playing.

Last year when I was surfing down the Jersey shore there was a huge storm out to see and there were a LOT of dolphins coming close to shore (close as in some surfers were right up alongside them). Anyway a dolphin fin came sloooooowly up out of the water and there were a bunch of surfers around that saw it and I started going (as The Sun says) Der-Dum, Der-Dum. For some odd reason a couple surfers got out of the water after that, no clue why.
