That's like saying it's your fault if you get shot because you choose to live a bad neighborhood.

And this is exactly the kind of attitude I find distressing about us humans. Red Rabbit, we are not water-friendly. It takes less than an ounce of water in our lungs to drown. The fact is, we are a land species. If we dare venture into waters that are inhabited by fish that have basically gone un-evolved throughout a million years than we are accountable, not the animal. The shark is basically a series of intricate motor reflexes and nerve impulses. Its navigation through its nose via electro magnetic receptors is a miracle of evolution. It's something to be admired, not demonized. And the shark is just doing what it's built for- eating and reproducing. It's like that line in JAWS, all these animals do is eat, and swim, and make little sharks.

If you want to put sharks next to humans on a moral scale, we fail miserably. We're far more vindictive, exploitative, and cognisant of what we're doing than they are. And just because we feel like we have the right to wipe out entire ecosystems so that we can go wherever we want doesn't mean we should. This arrogance is ultimately going to be the end of our species, mark my words.

Have a special day!

Fiery Angel does raise a point. We are land they are sea. If for some odd reason sharks sprouted lungs and walked on land we shoot the hell out of them (we do that anyway but not the point). It is with the same reason they attack humans, one for food and two probably for protection. Sharks aren't stupid they know we kill sharks and they dont want to die so to them its kill or be killed type situation all the time.

Um, sorry to disagree but there's much evidence that they have very little cognition. They eat because evolution has built them perfectly to do so. They are not like Orcas which have very elaborate and complex social constructs as well as much much higher cognitive skills. Orcas are territorial. Sharks can be too but its strictly motivated by proctecting their food source, not because they perceive a threat from humans.

BTW, I almost majored in marine biology in university which is why I have an affinity for all things in the sea.

So your saying we shouldn't swim in the ocean? As Steef said, shark attacks are few and far between, so there really is nothing to be afraid of if your swimming in the ocean. I have been to the ocean a few times, and it was always a great experiance. If a shark kills you, it's not your fault because it's not garunteed that a shark will kill you.

JWfangirl....Jaws The Revenge is not a very realistic portayal of the inate behaviour of the Carcharodon Carcharias.

 Heheh...what? never saw jaws the revenge watch the first five seconds of jaws 2 and was like "what the heck?!?!" so i never made it up to jaws 54 (aka revenge).

But isn't it more your fault, as the cognizant being, than the shark's?

Ray Barnsbury

I guess, if you really want to blame someone. If I was attacked by a shark, I'd be more thankful that I was still alive then figuring out how it could've been averted.

I stay out of the ocean because it's friggin salt water.

Having burning eyes, burning nose and swallowing salt water isn't for me. I had enough of the beach as a youngster, i don't even swin in lakes. If I want to go swimming or be near water a pool, hot tub or shower works just fine for me.

Now I don't mind lying on the beach drinking a nice cold Corona.

As I get older I find myself adapting the phrase "don't tempt fate".

Meaning if there is a risk involved, think twice.

I'm the same way, I don't like swimming in anything where I can either touch or see the bottom (ie, the middle of lakes or the ocean). Pools are just fine.

Sharks don't bother me that much, I know they're there but it doesn't stop me. I love the beach and the only way I don't go surfing is if theres a huge great white shark just circling around the beach and john williams and the local orchestra on a random barge playing the jaws theme.

Red Rabbit, I'm not saying you don't have the right to enjoy the ocean. I'm just saying you cannot blame the shark for being there since it's been there for the past million years. I'm saying that just because we show up as an organized species over the past 10,000 years, doesn't mean should feel entitled to eradicate another species so we can safely enjoy swimming in their back yard (or something to that effect).

But this is really a moot point. As we have discussed, most people who swim in the oceans do so not being aware that sharks are swimming close by. I just don't agree

I ment proper Europe, not the third world countries that happened to have drifted away from Africa 10 million years ago.

Yeah, like the greek and roman empires were less civilisated than the barbarians...

Anyway you did BELONG to a 'third world' (though i prefer the term 'greatest') empire for more or less 150 years ;).

I love your post, Fiery! I hope the Rabbit understands it now.

Next question: Is it my fault I ended up in the hospital because this dude opened his car door while I was passing with my bicycle?

Partially, he should have payed a little more attention and you shouldn't ride close to cars.

I say its mostly the guy in the cars fault, cars have mirrors for a reason.

Although cyclists should stay on the sidewalk, I find it more dangerous to ride on the sidewalk if a lot of people are walking by then in the street. I alternate between the two.
