There are 5 or 6 Williams scores you could call masterpieces.

Anything else would fall under the great/very good, good, fair or in some cases, and that's debatable, poor.

Joey speaks the truth. That is kind of the point of using the word "masterpiece," instead of "great score," or "one of his best."

The scores I consider to be masterpieces by JW would be ESB, Hook, PoA, LC, ET, Home Alone, and Family Plot. Though, once again, I would have to hear the score on CD before I could properly judge FP.

His most genius scores would have to be Jaws, SW, and Images.

Star Wars, TESB, Raiders, E.T., quite possibly ROTJ...I haven't heard the entirety of Close Encounters or Jaws yet, so I couldn't really comment, but I understand those are commonly considered to be masterpieces of his (haven't seen the movies either...). Hook would be very high up as would TOD, but if I was going to limit it, I would say...man, Star Wars really does have it all. Beyond that, E.T. ...and possibly Raiders.

This of course, all not having seen or heard CEOT3K or Jaws.

What I consider masterpieces are: Jaws, Star Wars, Superman, CE3K, E.T. and either Schindler's List or Raiders.

Some people here consider every score by John Williams a masterpuece, because it was written by...John Williams.

Indy4 also seems to have a penchant for lightweight, easy to absorb scores that requires no effort from it's listener. But in the end, also does not leave him with a lot.

You know, it's not like you have to consider only 6 JW scores masterpieces. You can say Raiders and Schindler's List are masterpieces without ripping a hole in the space time continuum.

I suppose that's partially true, but I do enjoy "heavy" film scores as well. And these lightweight scores leave me with plenty, I'm perfectly satisfied.

One could also say the Fiddler on the Roof and Goodbye Mr. Chips might be Williams masterpieces.

Or perhaps Jane Eyre.

I don't consider Schindler's List to be a masterpiece, its the least of his 4 Academy Award winning scores.

To me a masterpiece is something special, not every score a composer cranks out.
