Oh, this should keep us entertained for the evening:

CS: I thought I heard a homage or two to other composers. Did you deliberately try to throw one or two bars of others pieces into the score to establish those references?

Zimmer: No, I didn't. What did you hear?

CS: Well, I thought I heard references to Aaron Copeland in one piece.

Zimmer: Oh, no, the "Americana" thing. Yes, "Americana" and I have it on good authority that it really is a Scottish jig, but yes, of course… they're the quintessential dysfunctional American family.

There's a litmus test for telling whether someone is cool and has good taste in our book, and much of it circulates around whether they're in the camp of people who love and respect the music of Hans Zimmer or those silly mortals who don't understand the genius of one of the greatest living composers.

To think I used to like that site.

Looking forward to the Pirates album.

Zimmer, for some reason, seems to inspire the most extreme admiration from some camps. Just look at James L. Brooks's slightely delusional liner notes from Spanglish (A terrific score...but still).

There's a difference between deep admiration and unabashed blind worship. This sentence is an example of the latter, for sure.

On the official soundtrack site, there are a few snippets from the recording sessions, including 'Schpider-Shweine'.

No, I can't do it. I mean, I have to sort of immerse myself in the world. Really, otherwise it's just a bunch of notes that don't mean anything.

That's funny.

:)

That type of insanity is uncommon, even here.

I admit I like some of Zimmer's music but I don't think he's "one of the greatest living composers."

:)

That's just pure insanity to think he's one of the greatest living composers.... John Williams is 100x's better than Zimmer ever will be.

Just listened to the Spider Pig thing and it was shit. Probably suits the scene quite nicely though.

It did, considering the scene that it accompanied felt like an LSD trip.

In my opinion, there are five levels of composers.

#1. John Williams

#2. Excellent composers who aren't quite John Williams.

#3. Good composers. (Zimmer falls here.)

#4. Ok composers.

#5. Bad composers.

Zimmer will never be a great composer, but this doesn't mean I cannot immensly enjoy his music. I love some of his works, respect many of them, despise some ;). I think he has talent, he is creative, but he lacks the sparkle of genious and the skills of the REAL GREAT composers. Besides, now he is more a score maker, an artistic supervisor of his group in Remote Control. Anyway, I am against this Zimmer bashing, which I believe is mostly undeserved.Zimmer will never be a great composer, but this doesn't mean I cannot immensly enjoy his music. • 1 year later...

“It’s the exchange of ideas,” he says. “It’s other people helping to make your ideas better. Or if there is a momentary pause when you can’t think of something, or you don’t have the answer and you know that somebody can come and help you out. You have to be careful that you don’t dilute the specificity of your original idea, and everybody who comes on board serves that idea. And if the idea is good enough, everybody will be heading in the same direction.”

"Look, I don't want to have to reinvent myself all the time. I expect those other bastards to go and reinvent themselves."

:D

- Datameister, a non-Zimmer-hater who can nevertheless laugh about the guy's flaws.

“When somebody asks, ‘Do you want to do this movie?’, I always say, ‘I would love to do this movie’. But as soon as I start working on it, I am terrified because I have no idea how to do it."

What a liar. He knows that all he needs to do is dig up The Rock and reheat it. :D

Yes, 5 levels: I would categorize them as follows, as far as film music goes:

1. John Williams

2. Great composers: Goldsmith, Horner, Howard, Elfman, Newman, etc.

3. So-so composers: every composer who didn't quite make "Great Composers" fall here

4. Weak composers: (Zimmer falls here)

5. Abysmal Composers: too many to mention

I don't think we should ridicule somebody just because of what he thinks or whom he admires... :D

(Even if it's Hans Zimmer we're talking about! :D )

I am just asking of curiosity: are you are aware that you are responding to posts made almost two years ago?

:D No, I didn't!

So what? We're in a different time zone here. And besides, maybe he was still waiting for a response... :D

:D I hate it when people resurrect old threads like this, because I invariably don't notice until someone points it out!

Oh, what they hey, right? I mean, Zimmer quote threads are always good for a nervous, disturbed, frustrated laugh.
