I am thinking of buying this DVD, but I would like the version with the score only track, of course. So the question is: Which version has the score only track and how do you access it?

The DVD isolated score is alright, all though not complete. It's edited and some cues like at the beginning and end have Basil's voice and so it's hard to get a real clean opening and ending for some cues.

I actually have the real full score minus the source cues which you can get off the DVD Iso score and the set I have has unused material too for some cues.

I haven't seen the movie or the DVD, but the full score is superb, if the sound is a little flat.

I hate it when composers talk over their isos - doesn't it defeat half the purpose? Most annoying one for me is Elfman's Family Man, in which only like 1/3 of the movie is scored, but he talks over the music and leaves the unscored moments blank.

Then again, the Erin Brockovich R2 has a 5.1 iso, but can't be more than about 20 mins in a 2 hour movie, with no commentary. Someone please tell me why this has an iso and not something like Shawshank with its 5 million releases?

Rant over ;)

No, the purpose of a commentary track is to let the composer give some insights into why and how he scored the movie the way he did. Having the full score in its entirety without interruptions and edits would be the point of an extended CD release - and Starship Troopers absolutely needs that.

Yes, but composers such as Davis (The Matrix), Goldsmith and Beltrami seem to acknowledge the fact that they're talking on an iso track, and therefore limit their comments to quiet points in the movie. It just seems a pity that some feel compelled to always talk over the music and nowhere else, which also means that watching the movie all the way through with the iso would be rather irritating if you didn't keep switching tracks.

Plus I doubt the studios want to put complete un-edited tracks on the DVD for bootleggers to rip.

But they're not 'unedited' are they. Vosk just said that Troopers is filled with edits, and that's not the point I'm making. The reason I seek out isolated scores is to be able to watch scenes with just the music. And yes, if it's unreleased I might rip it for personal use, but that's hardly a problem for studios. And if the composer happens to do a commentary - and course their comments are invaluable - it would just be nice if they didn't talk during the more musically interesting parts, and preferably not over all the music.

Asteroid Grazing has always been my favourite. Really nice string statement in the middle, and then that addictive driving action at the end. I think the time he had to compose this really shows in that cue.

Aye. Those kinds of moments were always where Poledouris excelled. Nobody did them quite like him.

[Thor]I find the album for this score to be more than satisfactory. The complete score just goes on and on. The album is a wonderful presentation.[/Thor]

Don't we get enough of Thor over at FSM? Do we really to invoke him over here? (Not that he doesn't have a good point every once in a while)

It's been awhile since he's said anything noteworthy.

I haven't noticed his posts in a while. I do know that many film music albums would benefit from less (although, unlike Thor, I also know that many would benefit from more).

Reduced scores can be a good things,as long as you have all the cues to choose from.It doesn't mean because you have a full score you have to listen to all of it.In this case,at least I gained Carmen's Shuttle Flight.

I have still not ripped this isolated track, nor even listened to it, but I wanted to praise the "flying Carmen" theme: most beautiful, graceful, light (as in "it evokes lightness"), elegant.

Yes, well, I believe life is too short to customize every album one has. There are far too many good ones to be heard.
