Elliot Goldenthal

I remember a rumor saying that after he sued Tyler Bates and Warner Bros because of 300, Hollywood (and particularly WB) blacklisted him and stopped asking him to do big mainstream movies. This also explains why few of Goldenthal's WB scores have received expansions in recent years. I think it was just Batman Forever and that was over a decade ago...? His accident also didn't help.

No idea if this is true or not, but it wouldn't surprise me if it was.

Yes, combination of the accident and growing tired of big Hollywood films (especially action films).

I miss him on the big scene, but I respect his wishes.

What happened to this guy? There was a time when he was my absolute favorite composer. Then he got his Oscar… and almost stopped composing. Sad… :(
Imagine a Star Wars or Jurassic Park movie with his score! 🤤

Maybe he’ll return for HEAT 2.

He didn't really care for the blockbuster business - it didn't suit him well.  He would often miss deadlines, etc., and got the reputation of being sort of unreliable.  I think he was also an alcoholic at the time and seems to be in a much better place doing projects he cares about without interest in the business.

He got almost no offers to work after winning the award; producers assume your fee has become too high (ironically he worked on Frida for cheap).  But I've never gotten the impression that he misses doing movies like Demolition Man or Batman at all, the latter almost putting him in the hospital.  He says he prefers what he did for Butcher Boy or Heat, not the big orchestral stuff his fans go wild over.
