Happy Birthday, Hans Zimmer!

3 days ago, on September 12, was Hans Florian Zimmer's birthday. You all may hate him, but IMO he ranks just behind JW, and is as good as Shore and Elfman, IMO.

He created some genius themes for POTC: Dead Man's Chest. Jack Sparrow was an exciting, exhilerating piece. Other great cues from that score include The Kraken, Davy Jones, Wheel of Fortune, Hello Beastie, and more.

The final POTC score surpassed the first, IMO. He gave us some swashbuckling, fantastic music in Up is Down, as well as a beautiful love theme, some exciting Singapore music, the unique Multiple Jacks, some inspiring, amazing music in What Shall We Die For, and all the action music in I Don't Think Now Is The Best Time.

He won his only Oscar awards for Lion King, a purley beautiful score that deserved that awards 100%. There was the thrilling and exciting To Die For, the beautiful, awe-inspiring This Land, the heartlifing Kind of Pride Rock, and the purley African sounds of Under the Stars.

His score for Da Vinci Code was another magnificent one: Che Valiers De Sangreal says it all. Fructus Gravis and The Citrine Cross were also wonderful gems from that score.

Then there's M-I:2, but all composers are allowed a few flops - JW's WotW was, IMO, not very good (that comment was NOT meant to cause controversy, I'm just stating an opinion). These five are the only Zimmer scores I own, but I continue to enjoy all of them (except M-I:2) thoroughly.

No matter how many times he may be bashed on this MB, Hans Zimmer is, IMO, one of the best composers alive today, and honoring him on his birthday seems appropriate.

I don't think you are gonna win friends and influence people with this thread, but I admire you for making it.

I like Zimmers early work. For What it's worth.

That's a seriously petty thing to say. It's not like he's saying Babel was the greatest score ever written - just that he likes some of Zimmer's work, as do I and many on this board. I've been listening to a lot of Zimmer recently but also to a lot of golden age themes, and enjoyed both. What does that say?

Many happy returns Hans

PotC is crap. Batman Begins, Da Vinci Code and MI:2 are his masterworks.

Happy Belated Birthday, Mr. Zimmer. I like some of his work, and cannot stand some of it. I enjoy Batman Begins, The Lion King, the 2nd POTC, and a few more of his older, smaller film scores.

Happy Birthday, Hans.

His death is getting closer by the year...

That's John Williams, actually.

I predict 3 or 4 years at the most, he doesn't look very healthy in those New York concert pictures.

I don't know what your talking about. His pictures don't seem that bad, and his movements were as vibrant as ever.

Oh my god! Please, don't turn this into a When-is-John-Williams-going-to-die thread!

These two subjects keep coming up every now and then: John Williams' death and Hans Zimmer. It's a kind of cynical, morbide fascination which JWFans seem to have difficulty with getting rid off.

Oh yay, another Zimmer thread.

Zimmer is the future, JW is the past

You are absolutely correct. For those of you who hate Zimmer and his friends, you better get used to it because once John Williams passes, that's all there is going to be for the next decade.

I don't think that would be so bad...but what about Danny Elfman, Michael Giacchino, and Alan Silvestri?

IMO, Elfman is getting worse by the score...

As for Silvestri, he's basically a hit and miss. The only scores of his I enjoy are the ones he does with Robert Zemeckis...

As for Michael Giacchino, he is by far one of my favorite composers of all time. However, he is still new to scores in film, rather than in video games or TV...

Don't forget that most of the new composers tend to be more rock-like...

So basically, the next 10 years is going to be 90% Zimmer-esque.

You don't like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory or Corpse Bride?

Elfman is definitely not bad, it's just most of his best comes from Tim Burton films. But then again, it's always been that way.

I still can't belive he's never been nominated for a Burton film...the 2 films he has been for are Good Will Hunting and Men in Black. I've never heard Good Will Hunting, but I belive Men in Black to one of his worst. With all those great scores (Edward Scissorhands, Charlie and the Cholate Factory, Beetlejuice, Batman, Corpse Bride, Nightmare Before Christmas), and he's nominated for one of his worst.

Well, that will be the day I'll very likely stop caring about contemporary film music at all.

Just bought the track "Gumption" on iTunes, from Zimmer's "The Holiday". What an amazing piece! Anybody know more about this score?

The score is very nice, it's along the lines of his comedic-drama scores, such as As Good As It Gets and Spanglish.

Hey, now that's an idea! We definitely should have one, as we never had such a thread! :P

Oh yay, another Zimmer thread.

I have no problem wishing him a happy birthday. I have nothing against the man personally, he seems like a nice guy.

Yeah I agree. He seems a funny dude, who just should change work.

Better then Marian, in any case.

Easier, certainly.

Isn't Marian a girl name? Are you a girl? ;)

the only thing I like about Zimmer is he knows he sucks compared to JW.

A rare funny post by Joe. A very funny sentence, actually. :fouetaa:
