The Most Beautiful Music Ever?

Nice to see my man Uematsu getting some mentions. I'll add another one of his: Love Theme from Final Fantasy IV.

And from the achingly beautiful category, how about the First Lady's theme from Independence Day.

Enterprise Clears Moorings (Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn)

Epilouge/End Credits (Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn)

Any Mozart, no duds.

I find the Shostakovitch Piano Concert 2 Mvt 2 ( yes quite amazing piece) to be a commentary on the Grieg Concerto (amazing also) 2nd movement which really super reminds me of the Beethoven 5 second movement.

nothing from LotR

And you wonder why people find "tendencies" in you ...

Anyway, I'm voting for The Destruction Of Mordor out of spite ... alternatively, put me down for "Fawkes Is Reborn".

And "Silent Night".

Off the top of my head:

"Moonlight Serenade" by Glenn Miller

"O Holy Night"

A lot of Young Sherlock Holmes, including "The Riddle Solved/End Credits"

"Aniron" from FOTR

"Caras Galadhon" from FOTR

"The Breaking of the Fellowship" from FOTR

"Marion's Theme" from Raiders of the Lost Ark (probably any statement of it, particularly the mini-concert-suite in the End Credits)

"Selina Transforms Pt. 2" from Batman Returns

There's a bunch more that I'll probably list when I'm thinking straight and I'm not sleepy.

Speaking of most beautiful music, can someone recommend a few romantic, really heartwrenching pieces of music? Not just film music, but classical pieces as well.

You know, something for being madly in love.

And if possible, avoid the John Williams repertoire.

It would be much appreciated!

Thank you, any other? The sheet music for Max Steiner's "My Own true Love" has lyrics, but even the 2 disc Deluxe edition of GWTW only has instrumental versions. Is there actually a vocal version?

You probably know about all of these. Here's all the non-Williams love themes I can think of (in no order):

1. Love Theme from POTC: At World's End (best heard in One Day and Drink Up Me Hearties)

2. The Kiss (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix)

3. Scene d'amour (Vertigo)

4. Ilia's Theme (Star Trek: The Motion Picture)

5. Evenstar (LOTR: TT) I'm sure you already know about this one :)

6. Ice Dance (Edward Scissorhands)

Oh yes, Ice Dance is absolutely staggering. But these pieces aren't quite what I mean, they're too ... familiar. I was thinking of really tragic and moving pieces. Ice Dance is close. My Own True Love would be one, or Breakfast At Tiffany's, or Nino Rota's Romeo and Juliet.

The Kiss and Hans Zimmer's melodramatic dirge aren't even in the same category I was thinking in. I was thinking of self-containes pieces.

There are so many.

Here are some really beautiful classical pieces:

Heroic Song, symphonic poem op. 111 (Antonin Dvorak)

Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini, op. 43, var. no. 18 (Sergei Rachmaninoff)

Also Sprach Zarathustra, op. 30, no. 2 Von den Hinterweltlern (Richard Strauss)

Widmung, S-566 (Robert Schumann/Franz Lizst)

Cello Concerto, op. 104 (Antonin Dvorak)

Violin Concerto, op. 35 (Johannes Brahms)

Piano Concerto no. 2, op. 18 (Sergei Rachmaninoff)

Liebestraum no. 3 (Franz Liszt)

Warsaw Concerto for piano and orchestra (Richard Addinsell)

Swan Lake, op. 20 (Pjotr Ilyich Tschaikovsky)

Symphony no. 7 (Sergei Prokofiev)

Romance for violin and orchestra, op.11 (Antonin Dvorak)

Légende for violin and orchestra, op. 17 (Henryk Wieniawski)

Le boeuf sur le toit for violin and orchestra, op. 58b (Darius Milhaud)

Romeo and Julia, op. 64 (Sergei Prokofiev)

Partita no. 2 for solo violin, Chaconne, BWV 1004 (Johann Sebastian Bach)

On youtube you can find excellent performances of most of these pieces.

Even though I very much dislike Mozart...I have to add his Quintet for Horn and Strings in Eb K.407, 2nd Mvt. Andante to this thread. Its a piece even I can't say no to.

EDIT: You Are The Pan is also pretty beautiful/powerful.

Wow. I've got a lot to look into. Another good one is Gershwin's "Lullaby."

EDIT: Aw, heck, while I'm at it, the middle segments of "Rhapsody in Blue" and "An American in Paris" are also tremendous.

Basically, this is just your own opinions on what you consider to be the most beautiful piece of music you've ever heard.

Every night in my dreams

I see you, I feel you,

That is how I know you go on

Far across the distance

And spaces between us

You have come to show you go on

Near, far, wherever you are

I believe that the heart does go on

Once more you open the door

And you're here in my heart

And my heart will go on and on

"Adagio" for Strings - Samuel Barber. I don't know how anyone can't sit outside on a quiet day or night, listen to that, and NOT be effected somehow. It's just beautiful.

I also am a big fan of Vaughan Williams' Symphony No. 1 - " A Sea Symphony". Especially the beginning of the fourth movement.

There are so many others, but those two were ones I became very familiar with in college....Adagio because Sam Barber was born and raised a few blocks from my school of music, and Vaughan Williams because we performed it.

Great music.

Another Gershwin great moment: the "Second Prelude." Short, bluesy, awesome.

Also, the middle section from "Concerto in F (Finale)," right after the gong.

And yet another,"Porgy and Bess-- A Symphonic Picture," an arrangement by Robert Bennett.

The live performance of the second prelude by Leonard Bernstein (on DGG) is simply amazing...

And the way Williams used the slower motif from the Concerto's second movement on his colaboration with the late Shelly Manne on "That's Gershiwn" is just the sweetest thing.

"Firebird" by Stravinsky.

The Lullaby and Finale are magic. Ever wondered were Williams found inpiration for the final ten minutes of Close Encounters of the Third Kind?

Angel and Visitations Rautavaara (naxos recording ) :D

I think I have a sample disc of Rautavaara music, and kind of made a positive impression on me back then... Any more recomendations on that?

I heard Rautavaara's Angel of Dusk, Double Bass Concerto live in Helsinki. It was marvelous. Hard to acquire, sadly.

Another beautiful (heart-wrenching) peice of music is Henryk Górecki's Third Symphony. This one is amazing.

It's. On the other hand, the first part of the 1st movement always resembles me "Journey to the line" form "Thin Red Line" (or it should be the other way around)

Of John Williams' recent fare, I would say "Jazz Autographs" from The Terminal. Totally amazing cue. I actually put it on the playlist for the dinner reception at my wedding this past summer.

Other beautiful Williams' pieces I find are:

E.T. and Me

Main Theme from Sabrina

pentultimate track from The Accidental Tourist (if you count the recap on the last track)

last track from Sleepers (beautiful rendition of the boys' theme)

Leia's Theme

Han and Leia

and of course, the Love Theme from Superman

********************

Non-Williams' pieces:

almost everything from Agnes of God (Delerues was amazing)

City of Angels (Yared)

love theme from Troy (Yared)

Love them from Spartacus (North)

"Kick the Can" from Twilight Zone (Goldsmith)

the list is far too long in actuality
