Is this movie still filming? I keep hearing people talking about it wrapping in mid-October, but it started in mid-June. IIRC, a 4-month shooting schedule would make this one of the longest Spielberg and/or Lucas shoots (discounting pick-ups and reshoots) in a long time. Williams sounds like he expects to see a final edit in a couple of weeks.

Our questions will be revealed soon from John Williams what he is going to with the score for Indy 4 such as the incorporation of old themes from the earlier movies as well as new themes. I think It's going to sound like the phantom menace score for Indy IV...

I really liked this interview...many great topics and things discussed. Most intriging was about Indy 4 news in 2 weeks. Can't wait!

Actually, there wasn't anyhting of great interest on the interview. All of that as been better covered before.

The only interesting part is the conclusion of his Viola Concerto, and the upcoming work on Indy 4.

Well, he’s certainly free to do anything he likes. He’s certainly going to outlast me—he’s a much younger guy—so eventually he’s going to have to move on. But we’ve had an extraordinary collaboration. I don’t know in the history of film, at least, anything remotely close to it.
I don't think the reality of that really hit me until I heard the man himself say it.

No, no. I rarely listen to music actually because I’m writing all the time. Concertgoing is also very difficult because it’s hard to get my mind off my musical problem for that day. And, at the risk of sounding a little glib, if the music is worse than mine it doesn’t help, and if it’s a lot better than mine it doesn’t help. (Laughs.) Believe me, if it’s a lot better, that’s no comfort.
If any other composer had said he finds no inspiration in great composers...with CLEAR inspiration present in his body of work...he'd be gobbled up by now. :)

He says he doesn't listen to music at the present time. He has obviously listened and studied the great composers in the past.

Anyway, he went to the premiere of Christopher Rouse's Requiem last march. I wonder if he liked it.

This interview is just to poor in details.

Williams as said time and again that he don't listen too much at home, i.e. recordings, but he do try to attend concerts whenever he can.

What he also said several times is that he don't do that when he's at work on a particular score.

What are you talking about? The Phantom Menace was a masterpiece!

It was, but Indy 4 should go back to the old days without all the drama that was in TPM, and just write a plain fun score, like the old Indys.

You liked it? I think it's shameful that someone who sees himself as a JW fan and who gets the possibility of interviewing JW can't come up with something new, instead of the exact same dull questions which have been asked to him over the past 30 years over and over again. If you're really interested in someone, your questions show this. Then you have read old interviews, you know what has been known for years already etc. I can't get it how guys like him get to interview someone like JW. It's not only embarrassing to JW (it's unbelievable that he actually takes time to answer every question) but also to the real fans here around. I think the link to the interview should be removed from the main page.

Well... Yes... Still, that's quiet hard... Let's just say that better interviews have been conducted.

Has Williams ever been asked a dumber question?

Are you just going to incorporate music from the earlier movies, or are you writing any new melodies?

That's hardly surprisibng, now is it.

Williams never struck me as the type who goes out and sees Eragon in IMAX.

And a lot of people who write or perform orchestral music don't listen to it to much when they are not working, in the same way you don't clean people's teeth after hours, or I'm mixing ink in the weekend.

It makes sense that he doesn't see movies or listen to classical music much anymore. He said once his heroes as a youngster were Russian composers and some big band composers, so he got a fair amount of listening in. He's heard so many of the classics just be being a pianist and conductor, and going to Julliard. Hs favorite composer, Haydn, sounds almost nothing like him.

The lesson here is to ignore those who say that you have to watch as many movies as you can to become a good film composer. Hell, he'd never even seen a Dracula movie when he scored Dracula.

A lot of the newer generation of films composers like Ottman or Giacinchin grew up loving film music and became film composers for that reason.

Which can be very limiting in a way, since they are to aware of the medium and to self-contious about it.

Not just him. There was an interview with Giadingdong on FSM a while back.

It was like they were talking to someone from their messageboard.

Jerry didn't sound like that in interviews, neither did JW, Barry, Poledouris, Kamen, Shore, Elfman , Mancini or Horner.

So....

Giachina is more original in interviews then in writing filmscores.....

Does that make sense?
