What is the best ever, near flawless performance by JW and the orchestra?

That is in terms of every single note being struck just how you like it, the tempo as close to personal perfection as it should be and being outright great in nearly ever respect.

Mine is probably ET: Escape - Chase - Goodbye. Not only is this cue, or piece legendary in it's scoring perfection and achievement; its also performed with the confidence and gusto of an orchestra like the LSO at its contemporary peak. Pretty damn impressive for a 'mere' studio orchestra. I'm yet to hear brass as good as I did when I first listened to ET. The same can be said for the astonishing percussion too.

Actually Adventures on Earth (original c.d) is a much better version

Remind me, is that the version where the aching strings match those of the movie's at the end, when Elliot and ET embrace? If so I agree, but only because of that strict addition. Which is absolutely beautiful by the way.

Yes,that is it.You know the "Come Stay" part, and the little bridge that follows it is the film version, not an alternate Williams placed in later recordings

Are we going by pieces that have concert arrangements? In that case, I'd have to go with "Scherzo for Motorcycle and Orchestra" because it's better than the original.

Theme from Jurassic Park on the OST is pretty perfect.Even Williams never conducted it that well ever again.

Yes agreed and the trumpets have never sounded as good when performed in the Journey to the Island cue - get goosebumps every time!

I would have to say that The Desert Chase from Raiders is my personal favourite performance - a perfect showcase for the LSO and Williams in his prime!

Both that piece and Adventures On Earth are untouchable recordings, as far as I'm concerned, no other re-recording by no other orchestra has come close.

No rerecording of the "The Asteroid Field" has ever matched the energy of the OST.

I think the BPO version is better, crisper.

I think no re-recording of Theme from Schindler's List is better than the one on the OST. The re-recording with Perlman en the Utah Symphony is too fast, the Shaham recording too wacky and the Tamar Smirnova recording too weak.

Gerhardt's is my favorite rerecording of "Asteroid Field" but even that is inferior, if it were just slightly faster and more energetic. It's too bad because I really like the concert arrangement.

I agree about Schindler's List, Perlmans violin really cries on the OST. No other recording that I've heard comes close.

Adventures on earth (OST) is as perfect as it can get. The flying theme seems to take a dimension of its own lol. It's incredible.

The bit that gets me too is the little part near the end that starts with Oboe and then the Flute joins in while Horns play very soft long notes. The balance of the dynamics there is perfect and there is a bell around that area that is just played perfectly. It never seems to be that soft in any other re-recordings.

Also Into The Asteroid Field from the OST is incredible too

When I first read the topic this was what first popped into my mind.

Here's a few other ones that re-recordings have failed:

The Poseidon Adventure,Main Theme (all re-recordings are comical sounding)

Jaws,Main Titles (Never got this a dramatic again,in this case "more polished" doesn't work)

The Towering Inferno,Main Titles (Williams original is the most energetic)
