The Bear McCreary Thread

I'm quite a fan of "Goodbye, Baby" (Miniseries), which is sparse but has a great feel of anticipation and anxiousness to it, and "Roslin And Adama" (season 3) which makes excellent use of the strings and has a wonderful melody. I'm quite the theme-whore though.

Gary.

Bear's blog post, which is linked 5 posts up, announced the May 10th date.

Disc 1 of the 2CD set has been on itunes since then as well

You didn't tell me about it; I read about it on Bear's blog :)

Did you spend money on the iTunes release? You knew a physical CD would be coming that you would also buy, right?

Oh, well all I remember is you posting the LLL press release, and then me posting that it's also on iTunes, and then you amending the post. I read your post after my brother had sent me the score, to which I told him they was going to be a LLL release lol

Yea I thought there had been more discussion of the actual score here... maybe its in the LLL thread, or maybe I'm just remembering the discussion from the FSM boards.

Anyway, I'm curious to check it out, even though I still haven't found time to listen to my Human Target set. I'm more curious to hear his music for The Cape, though.

buysoundtrax is releasing a 2disc set of piano versions of BSG material

http://buysoundtrax.stores.yahoo.net/muofbagafors.html

Also, Bear has mentioned on his twitter that a true Season 1 release of the Caprica score is coming soon (my guess is that it will be LLLCD200 sometime in the spring)

He's also going to announce his next zombie project today on twitter, which he says is not a Walking Dead Season 1 OST

What of his do you recommend to someone who finds BSG incredibly boring?

Uh... The Cape? Very dynamic and heroic music, even for a truncated 10 episode order. McCreary uses brass impressively, and the orchestra he got for this one is reportedly the largest used for a TV show score (around 70 pieces).

I wish that show got a CD release.

On September 27th, La La Land Records will release a 2-CD limited edition soundtrack of my fully orchestral score for The Cape. The first 150 orders through the label’s website will be signed! The sale begins next Tuesday at 1pm Pacific Standard Time. The autographed copies will go fast, so check early in the day.

A digital release is scheduled for later in the year.

This album represents my most grandiose and lyrical orchestral writing yet. The story presented me with a rare opportunity to explore sweeping superhero music, in the style of my favorite scores when I was growing up. There are whispers of Elfman’s Batman and Williams’ Superman in here, yes, but my biggest influence by far was Shirley Walker’s scores for Batman: The Animated Series. In fact, this CD is dedicated to her memory.

The Cape soundtrack sits comfortably alongside my Human Target album. In fact, I think if Human Target had continued down the same creative path in Season 2, and I remained on as composer, my score would have resembled this. The lessons I had learned by my final episode of Human Target were applied directly to the first episode of The Cape. Anyone disappointed that I never got to write more Human Target music will enjoy the hell out of this record.

The two CD set contains all of the stand-out musical moments from the series. There are also a number of bonus tracks that are exclusive to the CD version of the score. Some of them will surprise you! :)

Yes. Thank you LaLaLand!

Bear's work on The Cape deserves some loving. It's a nice touch to see him recognizing Shirley Walker's contributions to the small screen, but it's a shame it didn't become a hit (I would've loved to see him evolve the theme through another season). I actually watched the final episode tonight -- just when the show gets into its own groove and become addictive, the plug's pulled. Oh well, there's still the DVD and CD release to enjoy.

I received my copy of The Cape today. Sounds great, but there is some dickhead who scribbled all over the booklet! If I get my hands on this McCreary guy, there's gonna be some blood...

Yeah just because you are a hot shot film composer doesn't give you right to vandalise other people's property! :stick:

The same thing happened to me with Bill Conti and the Masters of the Universe soundtrack. How lucky I was when I noticed LLL had foiled his evil plans and put an extra copy sleeve notes without his scribbling into the envelope.

So is it really that good. These samples sound quite nice actually.

Yeah, these people are retarded or something. They can't see these CD's already have their names on them?

Actually it is that good I've been going back and forth between this and 1941 (which I got in the same order) since I got them last week! The themes are good, the pacing is good. I have nothing bad to say about the album... If you liked Human target you will like this one.

The Cape is an excellent soundtrack - very much in the classic super hero/action mold of Williams/Elfman/Silvestri/Goldenthal. I really enjoyed it and you can tell they spared no expense in either the performance or the quality of the material. It's very good TV music. The best I've heard in years.

The only thing I've heard from McCreary is BSG. And while it's not my type of thing, the guy's got some skill.

Karol

I'm not a huge fan of the BSG stuff either but the Human Target and Cape stuff I can't seem to stop listening to!

The samples on McCreary's site bummed me out, then I listened to the samples on LLL's site, which got me to buy the release (and still get a signed cover!). But it's a glorious CD. Long story short: the samples don't do this one justice.

for the special sale price of $12.95 (reg. $15.95).

Offer Good thru Dec 1,2011.

BuySoundtrax Records has announced the November 16th release of the CHILLERAMA: Zom-B-Movie – Original Soundtrack featuring music by Bear McCreary (BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, THE WALKING DEAD, KNIGHTS OF BADASSDOM) along with the new track “I Don’t Want To Die A Virgin” by Young Beautiful in a Hurry. In addition to McCreary’s score for Zom-B-Movie, the soundtrack features the score to the newly rediscovered classic DEATHICATION from director Fernando Phagbeefy.

In the spirit of classic anthology films like CREEPSHOW and TWILIGHT ZONE: THE MOVIE and containing films that celebrate the golden age of anatrichilia, CHILLERAMA spans over four decades of cinematic excellence, offering viewers a glimpse into the joy of the late-night feature. The Zom-B-Movie segment was directed by Joe Lynch (WRONG TURN 2, KNIGHTS OF BADASSDOM) and stars Richard Riehle (OFFICE SPACE) and Brendan McCreary (the band Young Beautiful in a Hurry).

Zom-B-Movie presented Bear with the opportunity to expand his musical horizon into the sounds he grew up with. “Joe’s short film required a wide swath of musical styles,” he described. Some of his inspirations for this opus included Bernard Herrmann, Lalo Schifrin, and Jerry Goldsmith.

Also part of the CHILLERAMA pantheon is the newly rediscovered nearly 40-year old classic DEATHICATION, from director Fernando Phagbeefy. The influence of the great Kurosawa is evident in DEATHICATION, with Phagabeefy's use of epic images and creation of heroic characters with a strong sense of honor and duty.

Said Phagabeefy, “I wanted to harness those pungent emotions onto celluloid, and with the help of talented (f)artists like our composer [and McCreary’s long lost uncle] Sir Lion Magillicutty, in my opinion we created a true film for the ages, a fine wheel of fragrant filmic cheese to sniff and savor like a fresh lawn log.”

Because of the familial connection, Magillicutty’s music for DEATHICATION is also featured on this recording. “With this newly re-mASStered version of the score Lion produced available to the general pubic, I hope the film turtle-heads its way back into poopularity,” said Phagabeefy.

CHILLERAMA: Zom-B-Movie also gave Bear the opportunity to expand into two new areas: acting and directing. Bear directed a special music video for the film's closing credits, for the single "I Don't Want to Die a Virgin" by Young Beautiful in a Hurry.

Bear also makes a cameo as a deranged painter who uses an unorthodox medium for his work. To prepare for his role, McCreary took method acting classes and watched hours of Bob Ross on PBS. Said McCreary, "Well let's just say it wasn't the first time I flung shit on paper in order to see what stuck."

CHILLERAMA: Zom-B-Movie-Original Soundtrack will be available in stores, and directly from BuySoundtrax and digitally from the usual outlets on November 23rd , 2011. CHILLERAMA will be available on DVD or Blu-Ray on November 29, 2011.

CHILLERAMA: Zom-B-Movie is a limited edition of 1000 units and is now available for pre-order at www.buysoundtrax.com for $15.95 and is expected to start shipping on November 23rd , 2011.

BACK LOT MUSIC TO RELEASE A VERY EUREKA CHRISTMAS SOUNDTRACK

Featuring Original Music by Bear McCreary

(November 19, 2012 – Los Angeles, CA) Back Lot Music will release A Very Eureka Christmas digitally on November 20th and through other digital music outlets later in the month. The album features composer Bear McCreary’s (The Walking Dead, Battlestar Galactica) score for the two beloved Christmas episodes of the SyFy series Eureka: “O Little Town” and “Do You See What I See.”

Said series co-creator Jaime Paglia, "We hoped our holiday episodes would become perennial favorites for Eureka fans. Getting to release a holiday soundtrack is like finding an extra present under the tree. Please enjoy responsibly."

ABOUT O LITTLE TOWN (originally aired December, 2010)

On Eureka, as the Global Dynamics employees celebrate the season at the company holiday party, staff member Dr. Noah Drummer (guest star Chris Parnell) nearly absconds with a volatile experiment. The halls get seriously decked when Dr. Drummer’s unstable hydrogen crystal starts to grow at a frightening rate. Carter (Colin Ferguson) and Henry (Joe Morton) attempt to deal with the potentially explosive crystal, but before long the true scope of the problem is revealed, and it will take more than tinsel and carolers to save Christmas and Eureka. Former series regular Matt Frewer also returns as Taggert.

“When I first watched the episode with producers Jaime Paglia, Bruce Miller and Todd Sharp, we knew right away this one was special and would require a unique approach,” said McCreary. Bear brought in an orchestra to perform, and a special vocalist – Raya Yarbrough.

“Raya just has a fantastic, distinctive voice,” Paglia said. “When Bear said she was interested in recording a song for our Christmas episode, it didn’t take much convincing.”

“In addition to performing the songs and in the score cues, Raya joined me in singing my ‘Christmas Caroler, arrangement of Mark Mothersbaugh’s theme song,” McCreary described. “Melded with the hilarious holiday imagery, this main title absolutely cracks me up. I wish they’d use it for every episode.”

ABOUT DO YOU SEE WHAT I SEE (originally aired December, 2011)

Sheriff Carter (Colin Ferguson) and Allison Blake (Salli Richardson-Whitfield) are secretly planning the perfect holiday surprise for their kids. But a mysterious kaleidoscopic wave of color crashes over Eureka, leaving the entire town and its inhabitants animated.

“Do You See What I See? certainly raised the stakes visually compared to last year’s special,” McCreary explained. “The episode features four distinct styles of contemporary and classic animation. When writing the music, I had to measure up to the exciting imagery, match each style with a distinct musical style, infuse every cue with holiday instrumentation and various Christmas carols and do it all while still preserving my quirky, signature Eureka sound.”

Raya also contributed to this episode. McCreary would again weave multiple holiday songs together with his own material. “Toward the end of the episode, the orchestra quotes a beautiful, lush arrangement of Allison’s Theme, which is followed by ‘Jingle Bells’ in the muted trumpets and celeste, then sung again by Raya,” McCreary described. After that, the chimes and woodwinds quote ‘Carol of the Bells’, and Raya returns to offer a final solo statement of ‘Do You See What I See?’”

ABOUT BEAR MCCREARY

Bear McCreary's unique combination of atypical instrumental background (he is a professional accordionist) with rigorous classical training prepared him to compose for disparate genres. By the age of 24, McCreary was launched into pop culture history with his groundbreaking score to SyFy’s hit series Battlestar Galactica, for which he composed “the most innovative music on TV today” (Variety). It “fits the action so perfectly, it’s almost devastating: a sci-fi score like no other” (NPR). Io9.com declared Bear McCreary one of the Ten Best Science Fiction Composers of all time, listing him alongside legends John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith and Bernard Herrmann.

McCreary continues to write for the television show The Walking Dead. In 2013 he will lend his talents to SyFy and Trion World’s groundbreaking entertainment experience, Defiance, a combined launch of a MMO videogame and television series and DaVinci’s Demons for STARZ. His upcoming film projects include The Europa Report and The Knights of Badassdom. His other credits include critically acclaimed scores for series such as Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Caprica, and The Cape. His swashbuckling score for Human Target featured the largest orchestra ever assembled in the history of series television and earned him his first Emmy nomination. His feature film work includes Disney’s Step Up 3D and Chillerama, and his videogame credits include SOCOM 4 and Dark Void.

ABOUT EUREKA

Eureka seems like any other cozy, Pacific Northwest town, but is actually a secret community of geniuses assembled by the government to conduct top-secret research. What they've unwittingly created is a place where anything imaginable can happen -- and does.

"Eureka" stars Colin Ferguson (Sheriff Jack Carter), Salli Richardson-Whitfield (Allison Blake), Joe Morton (Henry Deacon), Erica Cerra (Jo Lupo), Neil Grayston (Douglas Fargo) and Niall Matter (Zane Donovan).

Co-creator Jaime Paglia, Bruce Miller and Todd Sharp are the executive producers. The series is produced by Universal Cable Productions. The series aired on Syfy from July 2006 until July 2012.

Wow! Not only is BSG: Blood and Chrome coming out March 12, a soundtrack for Caprica is coming out in April!

LA-LA LAND RECORDS RE-ENGAGES IN THE CYLON WARS WITH TWO NEW SOUNDTRACKS COMPOSED BY BEAR MCCREARY

Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome on March 12th
Caprica: Original Television Soundtrack in April
(February 5, 2013 – Burbank, CA) La-La Land Records announces the release of two new soundtracks Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome on March 12th and Caprica: Original Television Soundtrack in April. Bear McCreary (The Walking Dead, Battlestar Galactica) composed the music for both series.
“In scoring the Battlestar Galactica prequels Caprica and Blood & Chrome, I returned to the unique combination of world and orchestral sounds that defined my previous score,” McCreary described. “But, both prequels had their own distinct approach. Caprica was interlaced with delicate chamber orchestra textures, solo harp and other-worldly source songs. Blood & Chrome is energized by heavy distorted-synthesizers and searing electric guitar performances. Listeners will hear, however, that all three series have a common musical DNA.”
Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome (a prequel to the critically acclaimed hit series, Battlestar Galactica) takes place in the midst of the First Cylon war. As the battle between humans and their creation, the sentient robotic Cylons, rages across the 12 colonial worlds, a young, talented fighter pilot, William Adama (Luke Pasqualino), finds himself assigned to one of the most powerful battlestars in the Colonial fleet: the Galactica. Full of ambition and in pursuit of the intense action that the Cylon war promises, Adama quickly finds himself at odds with his co-pilot, the battle-weary officer Coker (Ben Cotton). With only 47 days left in his tour of duty, Coker desires an end to battle just as much as Adama craves the start of it. Though they clash at first, the two men forge an unlikely bond when a routine escort mission with an enigmatic passenger (Lili Bordan) turns dangerous and becomes a pivotal one for the desperate fleet.
Blood & Chrome is the second prequel from the re-imagined Battlestar Galactica series. The first was Caprica, which aired from 2009-2010. Though it only lasted one season, the series and its music cultivated their own loyal following.
“The Caprica series soundtrack was made possible by the tireless enthusiasm of the series’ passionate fans,” said McCreary. “After countless Tweets, Facebook posts, emails, questions and rants, fans made it clear they wanted to experience this music in album format. I am thrilled to collaborate once again with La-La Land Records to release more music from the Battlestar Galactica universe.”

I really like Bear Mccreary's music and chilled but firm attitude to writing music for media. I have to listen more to his older stuff, like for Battlestar Galactica (i actually like percussion driven cues, which is the opposite to most JW fans I guess)..

Bear posts so much good and inspiring videos of his work and the efforts of all the people who are involved in creating the soundtracks. It's a joy to see! Here's some recent videos if you haven't watched:
