Music in Film Trailers - what's going on?

Has anyone noticed how often the music used in film trailers has nothing to do with the score? Example: yesterday I bought the soundtrack for "Atonement" having heard the music which accompanied clips from the film during the BAFTA awards and being rather impressed by it. The music is wonderful - but it has nothing to do with what was playing during the show. I can understand that different music might be used in a trailer during an early stage in a film's production when perhaps the score hasn't been completed or even recorded - I seem to remember this happening for Schindler's List - but weeks, months afterwards? What's going on?

And it's odd that you chose Atonement as an example.....as it's one of the few recent trailers that actually uses some music from the score. And the BAFTAs are a rather shoddy production.

I bet the two most used movie trailer pieces are the opening to Spirit In The Sky and O Fortuna from Carmina Burana.

Oy... Because of their overuse in pop culture I find that O Fortuna, Ride of the Valkyries and Thus Spake Zarathustra now annoy the hell out of me.

I wouldn't say they're shoddy, they just don't hold a candle compared to all the American ceremonies. It's a typical British ceremony - small, short, and half the winners don't bother turning up.

Despite how cheesy, how cringe-worthy asome of the presenters' speeches usually are, the Oscars are much more fun to watch.

Who hosted the BAFTAs this year?

At least the wonderful Stephen Fry made last year's slightly watchable.

Didn't bother to watch this time after they cut the Best Music category from the broadcast last year. <_<

Jonathan Ross hosted this year. Or should that be Jonathan Woss?

He hosted the last one I saw. He strikes me as remarkably not funny, except in a stupid talk show kind of way.
