Memoirs Recording

Williams performed an arrangement of Memoirs in Tanglewood in 06 that was a virtual cello concerto. I hope that is what they are recording in Chicago. Hopefully we will get word on this.

This is more than a simple suite: it's a whole concert with music from Memoirs of a Geisha!

It will be as well the first official live concert recording release of John Williams. Such amazing news!

How many Memoirs recordings do we need?

This is great news! I absolutely love this score, but have lamented the fact that Williams has come up with so many brilliant arrangements of these themes (many of them better than those on the OST album), but that they weren't included on the soundtrack. So I have a feeling this may be a more exciting album than the soundtrack. I can't wait!

It is about time Memoirs concert piece got a proper recording. The stuff he did after the film was released was loads better than the in movie music. This is what they'll be recording, I presume - the huge suite he performed at Tanglewood. Such complexity yet simplicity and beauty in the concert version of the score. I was so happy he just kept on writing that score!

I'd rather have a recording of Williams complete Harry Potter suites,in good sound to replace all the crappy bootlegged recordings

or something we don't have, like the horn concerto.

Memoirs is definately not some of Williams best themes.

Let me rephrase you:

Something we don't have, like the horn concerto, would be nice too.

Potter has definately some of Williams best themes, but not the very best.

So does anyone how the track list might be?

I might... I'll let you know later this evening

Later in the evening hasn't arrived yet, but I found the answer right here in the site.

Suite from Memoirs of a Geisha

Sayuri's Theme, Going to School, The Chairman's Waltz, Brush on Silk, Chiyo's Prayer, Becoming a Geisha

Very excited about this, but let's hope that concert arrangement as we got in bad quality from that recent concert is included!

I'm guessing you mean the one with the Thornton School of Music SO...

If he's doing the same suite as the one performed in 2006, then won't be that one.

Memoirs is definitely one score I love to hear reinterpreted and rerecorded.

And now Johnny should record a suite from Angela's Ashes as well. Another score well suited for a suite treatment. :)

Williams and Ma recorded at least a few movements from the Angela's Ashes suite during the Cello Concerto sessions... Hopefully we'll have those released at some point.

Damn, what a pity.

I'm very happy with these news! I love Memoirs and concert arrangements are always welcome, mainly because the themes and musical phrases can be developed without the pressure to fit the images.

I'd like to hear a concert suite from Angela's Ashes score too... imagine, for example, the initial melody from Angels Never Cough totally developed in a theme... wow!

The actual "Suite from Angela's Ashes" is a lovely and moving piece of work. It's a suite for narrator and orchestra, much like the one from The Reivers. There is also a prominent role for solo cello. I really wish JW will record it soon.

Is there a unofficial audio or video recording of that?

There is ;)

Williams premiered it in 2000, with Frank McCourt narrating, Yo-Yo Ma on the cello, Ann Hobson-Pilot on harp, and Williams himself conducting the Boston Pops from the piano. That performance was recorded by PBS for an Evening at Pops televised show.

he does, sometimes.

Isnt it?

And why shouldn't he? Mozart did it, Beethoven did it, Barenboim does it, Young does it. And many more I'm sure.

One of my favorite performances of Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue is the one by Bersntein conducting the NY Phil from the piano.
