Who's going to see Williams in Detroit on April 11th?

It's getting closer and I'm really looking forward to seeing the maestro conduct his music in a live performance again. They don't have the "Meet and Greet" thing afterwards like they did in Pittsburgh back on 2003 but it's still going to be awesome to hear my favorite Williams' scores live.

Check this out- the DSO is having a luncheon (tickets range from $60 to $120) on April 10th and those attending get to see the rehearsal at 10:00am that morning. I've got to check more into this as I will gladly pay that money to have a chance to have lunch with Williams and also get to see him rehearse with the DSO prior to the performance.

I just found that out too...what an opportunity! I'm looking into if I can make it.

Maaan you Americans, you're soooo lucky. Mr Williams will never come to Europe. I'd love to see him performing live.

Unfortunately I don't have the money for a trip to the USA. But I'm happy for you.. ;-)

Ahh yeah hi to everyone... I've been watchng you no for quiet some time and now I decided to join you

So I call the DSO box office this morning and was able to secure 2 ticket for the luncheon with John Williams on the day prior to his concert on Friday April 10th. I got the cheap tickets ($60 per person) but $150 tickets supposedly get the patron situated closer to Williams during the luncheon. Also, all ticket holders get to see maestro Williams rehearse with the DSO that Thursday. This is AWESOME! I'm more hyped than I was when I went to Pittsburgh in 2003 and attended the post-concert Meet-and-Greet with Williams. Well, almost as hyped. I did end up talking with him a bit then. Not sure if I will have the opportunity this time although I can gawk at him as he chews his food...well, probably not as my wife will keep me in line. :)

EDIT- I just noticed I mis-typed Williams' name and I cannot re-edit that subject heading. Before this thread is inundated with posts to that affect, let me just say I'm so excited about this I cannot type correctly.

I'll be expecting a full written report (with illustrations) by the following Monday.

I have a phone with a camera so you bet I'll snap a couple pics. If I can get away with bringing my tiny Canon vid cam, I'll shoot some video of the rehearsal too. :)

This is totally amazing. I'm still on cloud 9.

Is this the Celebration Fanfare concert?

I'm not sure what's on the programme for that evening. I'm so hyped about this, I'm like a kid at Christmas. Hearing Williams' music live is amazing. Getting a chance to meet him (again) would be priceless....hmm, I sound like a Mastercard commercial. Except I paid for the tickets using Visa. DOH!

Good luck, Fiery Angel! I hope you'll be able to meet with the Maestro and chat with him. I had that luck last November in Chicago (he also kindly posed for a picture with me) and it was one of the most thrilling experiences in my life so far. I thanked him for the beautiful concert and he was genuinely surprised when I told him I was coming from Italy to attend the concerts. I also thanked him for performing the theme from The Accidental Tourist as an encore. "Oh, did you like it?", he asked me. "It was amazing! I'm very fond of both the score and the film", I replied.

Ah, those happy memories... :)

when I met him in 2003, I asked him to sign my Accidental Tourist CD to which he responded "I didn't think anyone remembered that film!"

needless to say, an already rare CD has the maestro's autograph on it now :)

I'm going to the concert on the 11th.....I can't wait!!! This will be my first Williams concert even though I should have gone to earlier ones (Chicago, Boston). I'm glad I still have the opportunity to see the best film composer EVER in person.

As for the luncheon, I would love to go, but I have college finals the week after and plus, I don't think I have $60 more to spend after I spent about $450 on box seats for my family.

I'll have to find some other way to meet him (briefly) and just get an autograph after or before the concert.

Does anyone have any plans for catching him for an autograph after or before the concert? Any good hang-outs? Should I just jump on stage after the concert (since my box seats are directly above the edge of the stage)?

I just purchased tickets for the rehearsal/luncheon on April 10th as well, for my brother and myself! Contrary to what you were told, Fiery Angel, they told me that there was open seating at the luncheon and the only difference between the ticket prices was getting your name in the program for the higher cost. But who knows...in any case, it'll just be great to be there at all!

I also asked about the program, and they couldn't find any info. So I'll try e-mailing them.

Ray, you are correct- the pricing is based on whether you get your name on the programme. However, the lady I spoke to over the phone said not to expect to be seated too close to maestro Williams as there are a lot of elderly ladies who contribute a LOT to the DSO and will probably be in closer proximity to Williams because of that. Wow, Williams has elderly groupies! What a stud!

I'll see you guys there then. I'll be attending the function with my wife. Look for the bespecled white guy with the cute Japanese woman and that'd be me.

Haha, that's great about the old ladies. I hope they don't try to get too fresh with him.

I'll definitely be on the lookout for you! I'll be the 23 year-old with my teenage brother in tow (wearing a black turtleneck, just to fit in).

Would that be bespeckled or bespectacled? :)

I envy you guys...

I just reserved seating for the luncheon!!!

This is going to be awesome....I can't wait.

The guy I talked to said there will be about 100 people at this thing so that means the chance of meeting Williams is pretty damn high!!! ;)

Let me know guys what you're bringing to get autographed.

Good for you! They sent me the invitation to the event as a confirmation of my order, and it says that Williams is the speaker. So that should be interesting, and they may even have a Q&A. As far as autographs, I'll probably bring a couple classics like Star Wars and Jaws, and then maybe something like PoA. Not that he'll be able to sign that many (or any at all, even), but might as well be prepared.

I was on the DSO website last night, looking wistfully at this event with its SOLD OUT sign.

But somehow, I got to a page where it said there were 6 tickets left.

SO I bought two.

So Woo I'll be there now too!

And in row B, main floor. That's front row!! I know I won't see much of the orchestra, but I'll be right up close to the Master himself!!!

It's going to be amazing!

I talked to the box office yesterday, and to my surprise they were able to tell me the program for Friday's concert! Don't read below if you'd rather be surprised on concert night.

The Cowboys Overture

Excerpts from Close Encounters of the Third Kind

Suite from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

"Adventures on Earth" from E.T. the Extra Terrestrial

"Monsters, Beauties, and Heroes"

Opening Chase from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade

Schindler's List

Star Wars III Suite

"The Imperial March"

Now, this actually looks almost identical to several programs he performed last year (San Diego, Columbus...), which leads me to believe that the person reading me the program misspoke with regards to the Star Wars pieces. At those other concerts, it was a suite consiting of "The Imperial March," "Princess Leia's Theme," and the Main Title. So I'm guessing that's what it actually is, since I've never heard of him playing a suite from Revenge of the Sith. Also, the encores at the previous concerts were "Sayuri's Theme," "The Olympic Spirit," and "The Raiders March." In any case, it's a pretty standard selection, though I'm excited for The Cowboys, having never heard that great piece live. And really, you can't go wrong with most of those classics, so I have no complaints. Less than a week to go, folks!

I can't wait to hear the "Opening Chase from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" performed live by JW. I've never heard it performed live and it is one of my favorite pieces from that movie.

Yeah, and I wonder if it'll be that demonstration he's done in the past, with the movie on-screen to show sync points between the music and visuals. That'd be fun.

If he is doing the Indy sync thing then I hope the E.T. segment will be the actual film version. I don't understand the "Adventures on Earth" edit. It has less of a natural flow than the film version and runs for about the same length.

I think it's actually about 10 minutes, vs. the film version's 15, but I agree that it doesn't flow as well as the piece in the film. I've never heard of him performing anything but the shortened concert piece, though.

Yeah, it was played at Tanglewood in 2003 synched to the film, although it wasn't the entire track from the begining It started about three minutes in (the rendez-vous at the van in the park) so it lasted for 12 minutes.

My wife and I are heading out for MI this evening since we're staying at my dad's for the next couple days. He's going with us to the actual concert (he's a professor at Wayne State and works during the luncheon) because he's a huge fan of Williams' music too.

I cannot wait for the luncheon and rehearsal, although the invitation reveals it's only a little over an hour (for the rehearsal). I'll be bringing a couple things to get signed, like my Superman Signature Conductor's score and perhaps a lesser known CD like Stanley and Iris or something like that.

One more day folks!!!!

I can't wait to see JW in person and meet all my fellow JW fans :P

Let's try to arrange a table at the lucheon just for JWfan members.

I'll have a blue dress shirt on with tan pants. I'm a younger guy, so maybe it will be easier to spot me because I have a feeling not to many "younger" people are gonna be there. Ya know.....because of the rap and pop music culture we got :P

I look forward to seeing everyone!!!

Later.

I'll be wearing a tan sports jacket and will be accompanied by my wife who's Japanese. I'm not sure there will be that many white dudes with asian women there but then again, I could be wrong.

I'm also really excited to see the rehearsal, almost as much as the actual performance. It seems to indicate on the invitation that seating is first-come first serve to I'll try to get a seat close to the maestro. Williams is so soft-spoken and will have his back turned away from the audience so a close seat would be good to pick up anything he says to the orchestra.

Parenthetically, I sat 2 rows from centre stage when John Adams conducted there in 2000 and it was amazing.

I'm really looking forward to the rehearsal too...what a great opportunity to hear Williams work with an orchestra! Anyway, I'm going to wear khakis with a red striped polo, and will be there with my teenage brother ("Sturgis"). Hope to see you guys there! (And don't forget to be there plenty early - they close the doors at 10)

I'll be at the rehearsal and luncheon, wearing a navy blazer and tan slacks with a red tie. I have a beard and glasses, and will be in the company of my father (shorter than me, gray beard, less hair <_< ). Feel free to say hello!
