Barrington Pheloung

Is anyone here familiar with the work of this composer? He seems to be quite prolific. I only know him from his haunting work on the sublime "Inspector Morse" series - which usually took second place to the detective's beloved opera. Hearsay has it that the original music contains hidden clues to the identity of the murderer, in Morse code and the like, and of course the theme tune spells out Morse's name in Morse code (I am reliably informed).

I have recently started watching the follow up series - called, rather blandly, "Lewis" - for which Pheloung also wrote the music and I must say I am very impressed... It captures the same atmosphere as the original and the music is just stunning.

Any views?

You are quite right. At least, that's what he told me when I spoke with him in 1991.

It certainly does. This might help:

M _ _

O _ _ _

R . _ .

S . . .

E .

Sing the dashes (long) and dots (short) and you have the backing for Pheloung's 'Inspector Morse' theme.

Wonderful music yes! And the Morse theme is haunting to say the list. Cant get enough of it. Five soundtracks has been released with Morse music and a 20 minutes suite. Not every british mystery series gets this kind of attention. And just now I discovered a new Lewis soundtrack to. Ordered it right a way!

I've had his soundtrack for Nostradamus (1994) for 14 years, and I think there is some of his TV work in the house.

His work of course drew on existing music of the period itself, and he wrote some wonderful original work on it too.

There was only one other person in the cinema on the day I went to see that movie. That in itself, was quite surreal.

I like the movie, and it's one of those movies ignored at the time which 'may' become very popular in years to come.

Here is the soundtrack (mine has a different cover though). You can get it for £0.70. You might as well snap it up.

Or if you're in the U.S, somebody is selling it for US$8 it seems.
