I met him once, and he was about as nice a guy as I could've imagined. I am shocked and very saddened by this news.

I was shocked and saddened to hear that one of Britain's leading and most talented directors died this morning. Being a big fan of Minghella for many years, this news really has gutted me to the core. I am a big fan of THE TALENTED MR RIPLEY and while many people were bored to tears at his movie THE ENGLISH PATIENT...this gentle fella has been the closest Britain has ever gotten to having another David Lean in their midst. A truly terrible day for British film industry and to the cinema world in total.

How did he die?
A spokesman said he suffered a brain hemorrhage at 5 a.m. Tuesday morning at Charing Cross Hospital in London, where he had undergone a routine operation on his neck.

I just picked up the newest Time magazine, and it has an article about a project Minghella was working on. That's sad irony.
