Starts out brilliant, but then loses it somewhat.

The Seven Years In Tibet thread made me think about cues which begin brilliantly, but then just of fade into something a lot less interesting, almost spoiling the cue all together. The first three minutes of Tibet's opening cue are stunning, but once that's over the music becomes rather boring, in my opinion of course.

Which cues do this for you?

I know we're not talking complete scores here, but the first thing that popped into my mind when seeing the thread title was Vertical Limit by James Newton Howard. The first tracks are great, but then it rather loses steam.

I am bored of it myself now, but that is a result of overplay on by part. Before that though, I loved every single second of it for about six months. As for The Forest Battle, that actually gets more interesting in the second half.

Not one of JNH's better scores. The movie sucked IMO and its cheesiness didn't help.

Amazing how honest people get about JW's music sometimes isn't it :P

I haven't seen the movie, but the main theme in any case is really, realy good. I absolutely love track 2, "Three Years Later". Many of the first tracks are easily 4-star material, but not the entire album.

I love the "Avalanche" cue.

Battle Of The Heroes does it for me, after the first few bars of the chorus it loses steam.

No, after about 3.5 minutes it's said all it needs to say.

I don't like the false ending of DotF

And anything by JNH. Always these promising themes that fall short of something

Duel of the Fates.

I agree, though I do really like the finale. Most of the middle sections are too repetitive.

It's similar to "Across the Stars".

"The Kraken" from PotC: DMC.

ohh yes definately! I always thought that Bass line at the beginning sounded very promising but after4 minutes or so it is complete garbage

Duel of the Fates.

I never understood why they put the most boring version on the album... the unreleased one's are far better.. and have mor exiting Williams-bombast orchestrations!

Shouldn't it be Across the Stars is similar to DOTF?

That's funny, because I actually feel the opposite, that the beginning is weaker than the rest. Mahler's movements usually have a strong beginning and often lose me after a while.

I know its dependant on the scenes it scores, but I wish the Star Wars 3 cue, "Grevious Speaks to Lord Sirious" contained more of that operatic choral work. I definately lose interest after that, but now have an edited version with the end chopped off, so I'm happy, but still wish it was longer

"The Planet Krypton."

Yeah, that's a great example. I love the first minute or so, but afterwards it's just dead music.

A track that always leaves me feeling unsatisfied is "The Orange Man" from Unbreakable. We finally get this big dramatic statement of JNH's tremendous theme, but it only last a couple of seconds. I wish we got more of it!

How so? I love the beginning. Hans is the master at building up music.

I love the beggining as well, but at 3:16 to the end, it starts to not get so great. I still enjoy listening to it at times, but it's definetly not as good as at the beggining.

No, that's called underscore, you blithering idiot!

Indeed, I'm almost lost for words.

I think the whole track is amazing, the mood and tone it sets is perfect - with or without the movie.

Different strokes I guess, although a kipper slap is in order :P

Yeah The Planet Krypton is a snore-fest. BORING!

The Throne Room is another one. Starts out great, but soon turns to just more uneventful underscore as the medals are handed out. Yawn.

The Visitors/Bye/End Titles from CEOT3K is another one. Had great potential early on in the cue, but it all went to pot once Williams decided to plagiarize Leigh Harline. Boring!

Indeed, and wonderful at that.

Now for my turn at controversy:

The Fortress of Solitude- the mystical music has always been a bit of a snoozer for me. The main theme statement at the end picks it back up, though.

Quidditch, Third Year- the whole cue is great, but the first 30 seconds or so are by far the best part.

John- strapping on the life vest

A good Zimmer example comes to mind. Jack Sparrow. Nice quirky little theme, sounds great on the cellos, and then is completely ruined by that MV wall of sound. Such poor taste.

I can listen to all of "Jack Sparrow," and I never get tired of it. I love the entire thing. Though I must admit, my favorite sections from that cue are the statements of Jack's theme, whether they're played by the entire orchestra or by one cello.

Absolutely. I find the first couple of minutes an amazingly addictive piece, but as soon as those heavy brass and strings come in, the magic is somewhat lost.

Why can't Hans just banish synths being used in the final performance, and record the orchestra normally, like everyone else...

I love the Crystal theme. I think that the Superman score has many amazing things about it, but, most of all, I love how JW totally captured the different mythological aspects of the character. Except for the Villains March (which I still like), every single leitmotif captures the essence beautifully, be it Smallville, Krypton, the Crystals, Lois, and, of course, Superman himself. And 'The Fortress of Solitude' totally captures the journey from Clark Kent to Superman.

I agree that the big MV stuff take away from it.....but it comes back at the end, with the cello wonderfully taking over from that wall of sound.
