Of Villians, Creepy Crawlers, and Sidekicks

First of all, I think all the options here are fantastic. Here's how I'll pick:

1. Irina Spalko - everything about her, from the makeup to the acting, is perfectly evil and icy. Second would be Belloq.

2. Ants! - the most aggressive of the creepy crawlers, I love how they

kill off that Soviet guy and carry him into the giant hole. I just wish they weren't CGI (obviously for the death scenes they had to be, but a few real ants would have been appreciated)

. Second would be Bugs!

3. Dr. Henry Jones - Hilarious, Connery is brilliant as Indy's dad. Next would be Short Round, followed by Mutt Williams.

1. Belloq - he's Indy's true rival, his "shadowy reflection" who he hates to the core. Mola Ram would be my second choice, and Spalko third.

2. RATS! - You have no idea how much I HATE RATS! In fact, we have one running around the house now as we speak and we've tried rat traps, ratsack, rat poison, and it still won't die!

3. Short Round - I wanted to pick Henry Sr., but he's too much of a superior to Indy to be his "sidekick". Shorty represents everything you'd want in a sidekick; loyalty, goodness and bravery, but doesn't upstage the hero. Sallah would have been my second choice.

Only going to comment on the sidekick one:

They were all great, which is unusual for a series of 4 movies. I even thought Mutt was a great character who I wish had a little more to do. And this is coming from someone who hated Shia LaBeouf in everything until Disturbia and didn't want him in this movie.

Short Round was great.

Sallah was awesome as well.

But no one can possibly come close to Sean Connery. To even suggest so is to reveal massive bad taste.

Spalko. Do I have some fetish for women in military boots? I'm a Blanchett fan, no matter how underwritten her part is.

Bugs! Because I like rats and don't mind snakes. And ants were CG, so not particulary scary (though not badly done, as some think).

Henry Jones Sr. Probably my favourite Connery role. Not a fan of Bond movies, sorry.

I haven't voted yet, but some thoughts:

Belloq is easily the best of the villains. Spalko doesn't get as much development, so she doesn't make the cut, but she's probably the second-best villain in the series.

The second two categories are more dicey: On creepy crawlies, I almost want to say the ants because not only are people really scared of bugs, but these particular bugs, as indy4 said, are more aggressive and actually doing something. However, I really hate mice/rats, so they're contenders. The ants and snakes are the only ones who were really doing much of anything, but it is hard to judge--what kind of criteria do you judge creepy crawlies by?

As far as the sidekick goes, I'm going to eliminate Marcus and Henry, because they are more mentors than sidekicks, although they do have that function in LC from time to time. Sallah, Short Round, and Mutt are really the true sidekicks, and this is a really tough choice--and I'm glad I can say that! Mutt is honestly a terrific character, and I could actually vote for him. On the other hand, Sallah was great, and so was Short Round...I just don't think I can pick right now. At least, not until KOTCS gets a bit more familiar and I can judge a bit more objectively (if that's possible).

Arnold Toht (!!!), snakes, and... I would vote for Sallah, but since he's such a doofus in Last Crusade, it's got to be Short Round.

Because she wasn't a total villain. She was sort of pulled into being a Nazi, she didn't really believe in what they were doing. And she killed off Donovan, who is the big baddie of LC.
