Despite the ugliness, she never gave up. Beautiful photography doesn't make a monster less hideous. Barry Lyndon looks gorgeous too despite the ugliness of the main character. Where are the complaints now? Spielberg just shows his admiration for directors like David Lean. I can easily find more reviews saying the photography of The Color Purple is the film's forte.
