Which are your Top 3 JW scores of the new millenium?

Amazingly, John Williams wrote 14 scores already, since 2000:

2008 - Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

2005 - Munich

2005 - Memoirs of a Geisha

2005 - War of the Worlds

2005 - Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith

2004 - The Terminal

2004 - Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

2002 - Catch Me If You Can

2002 - Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

2002 - Minority Report

2002 - Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones

2001 - Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

2001 - A.I. Artificial Intelligence

2000 - The Patriot

Which are your top 3 picks? Is KotCS among them?

It's a difficult choice (I thought about it for some minutes!!!), but--for me--YES it is!!! If you can't decide, think of it this way. You have to move to a lonely island for the next year and a half. You're only allowed to take three JW albums and a CD player (no ipods or MP3 players allowed on this island!), but only out of the above list. Which would you take along?

My Top 3:

1. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

2. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

3. A.I. Artificial Intelligence

Right now Indy 4 would be at the bottom of the "first tier" for me, behind Eps. II and III, HPs 1 and 3, and AI. There's a decent gap between those and the "second tier", which would start with Geisha and CoS.

1) Prisoner of Azkaban

2) Artificial Intelligence

3) Memoirs of a Geisha

I don't know where to rate KOTCS yet.

I appreciate different opinions, but you place Patriot over KotCS and PoA? Seriously???

Yes. I love Patriot main theme with violin introduction and lots of snare drums in the middle section :) . The rest is also nicely loud and bombastic Williams stuff. I think it's more original writing than KotcS which mostly we have heard better in the Indy prequels. Irina Spalko is the only big theme in the league of Williams great themes.

PoA I have never liked very much, although I love the renditions of the City of Prague Philharmonic.

But is has been a difficult choice, I admit. KotCS would be no. 6 for sure :)

My top 10 would be:

1) Sorcerer's Stone

2) Chamber of Secrets

3) Patriot

4) A.I.

5) Memoirs of a Geisha

6) KotCS

7) Prisoner of Azkaban

8) The Terminal

9) War of the Worlds

10)Revenge of the Sith

Anyway, I think Patriot is terribly underrated here. It deserves more recognition that it gets.

The Patriot used to be well regarded here. But then something happened and many people decided to trash it. I wonder why?

Same thing with AotC. I remember people praising Across the Stars when the album came out, but no word of it today!

P.S. I think The Patriot is a solid score and I liked it very much (especially the Main Title), but it's not quite a JW masterpiece.

I like ATS and I'm surprised some people here discard it so easily. It's the love scenes you should hate, not the music! It almost makes these scenes worthwhile. Most tracks on the album are strong. But there are many weak points on it as well. Separatist theme from AOTC may be the weakest of all JW's villain library and the most lackluster theme of his as well. And the sound quality does it's thing as well. But, in the end, it's probably the strongest album of the three, sequence-wise.

Karol - listening only to the suite from The Patriot.

Karol

Yeah, that's probably because AotC is the SW prequel movie for which JW wrote the least music.

2004 - Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

2002 - Catch Me If You Can

2001 - A.I. Artificial Intelligence

Again, I appreciate different tastes, but you put CMIYC over the Star Wars prequels and KotCS???? ^_^

There are many people I know who appreciate JW for Schindler's List and think SW, Jaws and Indiana Jones are all worthless garbage. Williams' talents are very diverse. That's why people like him for so many different things.

1. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone

2. Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith

3. Catch Me If You Can

Followed by Memoirs of a Geisha, HP II, IJ & KotCS ... I haven't yet had enough time for listening to KotCS to decide whether to include it in the first three or not. <_<

Geisha and PoA are definitely top 3. I can't decide between WOTW, AI, Ep III, The Terminal, CMIYC for the last spot. After that comes my second tier of scores. Skull is somewhere there.

3. Memoirs of a Geisha (2005)

That last one was very close, I'm very much enjoying KotCS and Munich as well.

Good post. I don't know it comes scores are usaully praised more at first release than after a few months. Probably it by then can be better seen in the light of the whole body of the composer's work.

I take it we're talking abouty complete film scores here, not albums. Tops on my list, of course, are A.I. and Azkaban, as they are t just among Williams finest of the century, but of his career. Vying for the third spot are War of the Worlds, Minority Report, and The Terminal.

In no particular order:

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

A third isn't so easy to pick. ROTS has some brilliant stuff, WOTW has a few standouts which rank among Williams best 2000 writings.

KOTCS in my opinion seems rather overrated here. It's a solid score with fine moments, but not much of it really stands out among Williams' other scores. And while I'm not so much a fan of Williams later serious scores, they do strike me as "better written" than KOTCS.

And as for Across the Stars, it's brilliant, far superiour to the similar Fawkes. The score has a few other brilliant cues, too. It just doesn't really go together as a whole that well.

3. Revenge of the Sith

Of course, that's being unfair to the others because I love them all (even WotW), but some of them had to go.
