Friday night I had the pleasure of attending a concert by the Austin Wind Symphony.

The lineup began with the theme to the TV series Hercules, after that the orchestra performed a suite from the first Narnia film then jumped into an enthusiastic performance of Michael Kamen's Robin Hood, Prince Of Thieves theme and love theme.

After a perfromance of "Jack Sparrow" from POTC, John Debney's theme to Seaquest was performed. Then came a nice suite consisting of Stargate SG-1, James Horner's Battle Beyond The Stars and the theme to the original Battle Star Galactica follwed by SG-1 again to bookend the sequence.

Then the good stuff came as the orchestra performed the film version of "The Asteroid Field" from The Empire Strikes Back to the sequence from the film being shown on screen. Actually they began the performance at the 1:12 minute of the cue but they kept pace with the images on the screen for a fun performance.

Next came Williams' main title to Amazing Stories and then came two cues from the Indiana Jones films; the Raiders March with Marion's theme and the hi-lite of the evening, a very good performance of "Parade Of The Slave Children" and "Short Round's Theme" from Temple Of Doom.

It was a rousing performance and a real treat to hear it live. Also included during the concert was short performance of the "Well Of The Souls" for a little live action skit involving someone dressed as Indiana Jones coming out and playing with the audience.

Then the orchestra closed out with a performance of Jerry Goldsmith's The Wind And The Lion to include the main theme and a portion of "The Rasuli Attacks".

After a quick reprise of the Raiders march the concert was over.

Their next concert is scheduled for September or October and will "Boldly Go Where No Man Has Gone Before"...... ;)

That alone must have been worth it, so it concluded with Han & Leia's theme as the Falcon flew into the asteroid?

Wow, I wonder where they got the music from. The published version of Asteroid Field is the concert arrangement. Earlier this year, the Baltimore Symphony did a sci-fi night with special guest George Takei. It ended up being mostly Williams. They did a medley of TV themes, no Amazing Stories, but they did do Lost In Space and Land of the Giants. I never thought I'd hear those live.

At last year's Halloween concert they did play Land Of The Giants, which was a treat as well as the Jaws suite Williams composed for the Main Titles on the original MCA album.

I've been meaning to ask the conductor where he gets the music from but after the concert they get swamped with audience members and friends talking with them plus it's about a 70-90 minute drive back home I had to work this morning.

How did Lost In Space sound live, and which version did you hear, Season 1&2, or Season 3?

It sounded great. Except for a flub made by the flutist at the end of Adventures on Earth, they were out of this world (shameful pun). During the medley, not all members of the orchestra were playing so it had that small ensemble sound and the tempo was quick, like most TV themes. I'll have to get back to you about which season it was. I'm at work and don't know off the top of my head which season it is from, it has literally been years since I've listened to Lost In Space music.

I actually was just reading about this concert last night on the AWS's website. It always makes me sick with envy that they get to play only film and television music. Sounds like a great show!

They played PotC? Well, one thing I don't mind missing.

Unfortunately, through a combination of work matters and finances (gas prices!) I wasn't able to make this show. It was originally supposed to be just Indy, but that's a damn fine lineup they came up with instead. Good to see the Olivarezes soldiered on without me. :nono:

Hey, it used to be cheaper than dirt. It's an adjustment. And it wasn't the only reason, just part of it. If they're going to be doing what it looks like in September or October I'm not going to miss that.

Gas prices?

What a rubbish excuse. In the USA, petrol is still dirt cheap.

please Stefan, your really don't get it, you live in a compact tiny country, you don't even own a car.

in relative costs it very expensive in the US because of consumption. I doubt the average car owner in europe drives nearly as many miles/km per year as an American.

We don't have mass transit like most European countries do, mainly because we're so much bigger, nearly twice the size with nearly twice the number of cars per 1000. We still have wide open spaces and our cities are spread out, not nearly as compact. I spend nearly 60 bucks a week on gas, when it used to be 15. I doubt your range is 4 to 5 hundred miles a week.

Cheaper then water!

no, Stefan, I just got my water bill yesterday, 28 bucks, and I used 1000+gallons of water, while last month I used about 60 gallons of gas.

Thanks MrScratch, I was wondering, I would have loved hearing that.

no here, in Ark. The combined fed and state tax is 39 cents, which is just about 10%, the tax on water is about 18% before they double tax it for another 4%
